Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rose Garden of Persia To the Orientalist is known the extreme dith culty of conveying in any European tongue the exact meaning of the poet: the Germans have perhaps succeeded best in consequence of the con struction of their language; but mere words alone in Persian sometimes express so much that the translator finds all his efforts unavailing to render them of the same force. For instance, the Per sians have words and names which at one view exhibit many qualities without more explanation, and which throw a charm over their songs, impos sible to reach. Book excerpt: Entitled the Gulistan in its original Persian, The Rose Garden was written in 1258 by Saadi - one of the greatest medieval Persian poets. To this day an influential classic, this collection of poems and stories contains many insights still relevant in today's world. Saadi takes us on a journey through his rose garden. His wisdom is timeless; his humor delightful. He illuminates the most natural situations into enlightening messages. He humbles us with the truth, and it is magical that his message is so relevant to our lives, especially in the world of falsehoods that we live in today. Saadi simply shows us how to recognize truth through the only means - god. In this fickle life nothing is assured. The only truth is the creator, the only path is to be one with him, and to do this we must submit to his will so that we can share in the splendor of the Absolute. This new translation of The Rose Garden, by Dr Gholam Hossein Mahdavi Tootkaboni, seeks to stay as close to the original as possible, thereby retaining the wealth of hidden meanings as well as the freshness of Saadi's simple metaphors.

Book excerpt: The Heavenly Rose-Garden is a fascinating portrait of the Caucasus at the dawn of the modern era. Written in Persian and completed in 1845, it offered the first look at the region by a native son, 'Abbas Qoli Aqa Bakikhanov. It remains the only dedicated history of Shirvan and Daghestan to this day and also contains a great deal of interesting information about the Caucasus in general during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Bakikhanov demonstrates that despite differences in language, religion, and ethnicity, all the peoples of the Caucasus traveled a similar historical road and, to some extent, shared an identity distinct from the Ottoman Turks and Persians of adjacent, larger states. Translated for the first time into English by two eminent historians, The Heavenly Rose-Garden is a mine of information for scholars studying the region and an engrossing read for anyone else. 'Abbas Qoli Aqa Bakikhanov was an Azerbaijani journalist, linguist, poet and philosopher. A scion of the Khan of Baku, he was born there in 1794. From 1820 to 1845 he served as a secretary and translator in the Russian army, which had taken over most of the Caucasus in previous decades. Throughout this time he traveled widely, carried out ethnographic studies and kept his ties with the literary establishment of the Caucasus, centered in Tiflis in present-day Georgia. He died in 1847. Willem Floor has published numerous works of history as well as translations. Among them: Public Health in Qajar Iran; Agriculture in Qajar Iran; The History of Theater in Iran; The Persian Gulf: A Political and Economic History of Five Port Cities; The Persian Gulf: The Rise of the Gulf Arabs; Samuel Gottlieb Gmelin's Travels Through Northern Persia 1770-1774, and his most recent book, A Social History of Sexual Relations in Iran. Hasan Javadi is the author or translator of many books, including Satire in Persian Literature; Persian Literary Influence on English Literature; Forough Farrokzad's Another Birth and Other Poems; and in Persian, European Travelers in Iran. Retired from Cambridge and Berkeley, Dr. Javadi has recently published a translation of the work of Obeyd-e Zakani, Ethics of Aristocrats and other Satirical Stories, and edited Letters from Tabriz by E. G. Browne.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulistan is among the most famous works of Persian literature by one of Persia's greatest poets, Muslih-uddin Sa'di Shirazi. Born in Shiraz sometime between 1184 and 1210 CE, Sa'di received his education in Baghdad and spent several decades in travel and pilgrimage. In 1256, Sa'di returned to Shiraz. He wrote the Gulistan in 1258, the same year that the Mongols sacked Baghdad. The Gulistan or Rose Garden of Sa'di, intended as a 'mirror for princes,' includes prose didactic tales interspersed with short verses. The book is divided into eight parts: The Manners of Kings, The Morals of Dervishes, The Excellence of Contentment, The Advantages of Silence, Love and Youth, Weakness and Old Age, The Effects of Education, and Rules for Conduct in Life. This classic translation by Edward Rehatsek has been edited and updated with a new introduction by David Rosenbaum.
