Book excerpt: Since theology is practical and has important implications for our lives and our churches, it is helpful to review the foundations of our beliefs and ask questions to deepen our understanding. In Roots of Our Faith, Morgan Byrd takes the reader on a journey through the rich doctrines of the Bible in a simple but thorough way, using the Abstract of Principles (1858) as a guide. The Abstract of Principles has long served as a summary of foundational biblical doctrines in Southern Baptist life. While brief, the Abstract is also diverse, clear, rich and rooted in the Scriptures. Byrd started using the Abstract as a base for teaching doctrine at his church, and this book is the eventual result of that teaching ministry. With a pastor's heart, Byrd expounds the biblical and theological basis for each article through an overview, an exploration of its Scriptural foundations, a line-by-line explanation, a look at misconceptions about the article and, finally, its practical application. This is deep, grounding theology for Christians of any age or life circumstance. There are twenty articles in the Abstract: The Scriptures, God, The Trinity, Providence, Election, The Fall of Man, The Mediator, Regeneration, Repentance, Faith, Justification, Sanctification, Perseverance of the Saints, The Church, Baptism, The Lord's Supper, The Lord's Day, Liberty of Conscience, The Resurrection and The Judgment. It is hoped that Roots of Our Faith will encourage Christians to grow in their love and understanding of God and be challenged to live out their faith with holiness and joy. May it also serve as a stimulus to those who have not yet embraced Christ as Saviour and Lord. Suitable for private reading or as the basis for a group or church study.

Book excerpt: The heart of the Christian faith rests upon the confession "Jesus is Lord," yet faithful Christians sometimes overlook the fact that the Lordship of Jesus is firmly rooted in the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament. Moreover, knowing Jesus more fully entails knowing the story of God's salvation that was planned before the foundation of the world. Modern readers tend to forget that the declaration "before Abraham was I am" underscores the continuity between the promise to Abraham and its fulfillment in Christ. Acquiring a basic understanding of the relationship between the Old and New Testaments with respect to salvation's drama will enrich every reader's faith and appreciation for the Scriptures. Book excerpt: Revised 2016 Edition: Despite the sensational nature of its subject, Lost in Translation: Rediscovering the Hebrew Roots of our Faith is written in simple, clear, rational language that relies 100 percent on the Bible as the ultimate authority. The book's authors clear away centuries of confusion surrounding subjects that are seldom addressed in modern sermons and Bible studies. Using the ancient Hebrew language and culture, the authors clarify many of the Bible's so-called "mysteries" and help the reader rediscover many of the foundational truths that have been "lost in translation." Topics include: - Who is the Bride of Messiah? - Is there a difference between covenant and testament? - Israel: Who are they really? - What is the difference between devils, demons, and nephilim? Join us on an exciting adventure to rediscover the treasures still buried within the pages of The Book that reveal the pathway to the heart of God. "A must-read for the church! Providing foundational insights which lead to a greater understanding of God's master plan, this book will open your eyes to scriptural distortions due to the centuries of Greek influence on the church." - Corey Berti, Senior Pastor, Silver Valley Worship Center, ID "I've been a believer for 12 years, and I've read numerous scriptures that didn't make sense. The authors do a tremendous job of explaining the importance of understanding our Hebrew roots which provide context and clarity to the overall theme of God's message. It's like watching TV in black and white and then suddenly seeing it in color. The truth hasn't changed, but it's meaning becomes more vivid." - Jason Carr

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the roots of Christianity run deep into Hebrew soil, many Christians remain regrettably uninformed about the rich Jewish heritage of the church. Our Father Abraham delineates the vital link between Judaism and Christianity, exemplified by the common ancestry of the two faiths traceable back to Abraham. Marvin Wilson calls Christians to reexamine their Semitic heritage to regain a more authentically biblical understanding of what they believe and practice. Wilson, a trusted voice among both Jews and Christians, speaks to both past and present, first developing a historical perspective on the Jewish origins of the church and then discussing how the church can become more attuned to the Hebraic mindset of Scripture. Drawing from his own extensive experience, he also offers valuable practical guidance for salutary interaction between Christians and Jews. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter make this book especially suitable for use in groups—Christian, Jewish, or interfaith—as readers strive to make sense of their own faith in connection with the other. The second edition of Our Father Abraham features a new preface, an expanded bibliography of recent relevant works, and two new chapters: one that discusses Jewish-Christian relations after the Holocaust and another that reflects on Wilson’s own fifty-plus-year career as an evangelical Christian deeply committed to interfaith dialogue. As Christians and Jews feel a growing need for mutual support in an increasingly secular Western world, Wilson’s widely acclaimed book will offer encouragement and wise guidance toward this worthy end.

Book excerpt: Every major teaching of the New Testament has roots deep in the Old Testament. Many Christians have been taught to interpret the Old Testament through the filter of the New. This book instead encourages us to return to our biblical roots, which means to interpret the New Testament through the filter of the Old just as the early apostles had done.

Book excerpt: This rich and challenging book explores the roots or ancestry of the Churches of Christ and others who stand as heirs to the Stone-Campbell movement of the early nineteenth century. It asks, Where did we come from? How did we get this way? Why do we read the Bible the way we do? What has been the heart of our movement? And it asks further, What can we learn from those who have viewed restoration of apostolic Christianity in ways quite different from our own? The authors begin their story in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries - the age of Renaissance and Reformation. They isolate the stream of restorationist thought that arose in that age and then follow that stream through the Puritans, the early Baptists in America, the frenzy of pure beginnings in the early decades of American nationhood, and down to the Stone-Campbell movement.

Book excerpt: Origins of Our Faith is an historic look back to the Hebrew roots of Christianity which propells the reader through a paradigm shift. Rick Richardson explains how and why a small group of Jewish "believers" were transformed into the most influential religious movement in history, and how returning to the origins of our faith is the only way for us to reach our destiny. Fascinating and important... You may not agree with all of Richardson's arguments and observations but they merit serious consideration. Michael Medved- Nationally syndicated talk show host.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believers, who have come to the one True God through faith in Yeshua (Jesus), have been grafted into the Commonwealth of Israel. Through the prophet Ezekiel, God told that He Himself would come and rescue His lost sheep and set one shepherd over them. When Yeshua came, He declared that He was that Good Shepherd and He had other sheep who were not Jewish; they must be brought into the fold also. This uniting of Jew and Gentile together in one Body is called the One New Man. Non-Jewish Believers have been kept separated from their Jewish Brothers for the past 1800 years. Much rich heritage was lost to the non-Jewish part of Messiah's Body. Yet God said that Messiah will be retained in Heaven until the complete restoration of everything He had spoken through the prophets was accomplished. It is the purpose of this book to restore the Body of Messiah to the understanding of the Jewish roots of their faith. May we be the answer to Yeshua's prayer that all who believe would become One in Him. DeeAnna Koven was born again at age five through the ministry of Jewish Evangelist Hyman Appelman. She began teaching in Sunday School at age 12, and continued throughout her life in churches and Messianic congregations. After Bible college and the Child Evangelism Fellowship Training Institute, she trained teachers in CEF, taught in a private church school, tutored missionary children in Spain, and taught in a Hebrew academy at Temple Aron HaKodesh in Lauderdale Lakes, FL, where she met and married Jack, her late husband of 28 years. This is her first published book.
