Book excerpt: THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER IS NOW A MAJOR-MOTION PICTURE DIRECTED BY RON HOWARD AND STARRING AMY ADAMS, GLENN CLOSE, AND GABRIEL BASSO "You will not read a more important book about America this year."—The Economist "A riveting book."—The Wall Street Journal "Essential reading."—David Brooks, New York Times Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of white working-class Americans. The disintegration of this group, a process that has been slowly occurring now for more than forty years, has been reported with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. J. D.’s grandparents were “dirt poor and in love,” and moved north from Kentucky’s Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually one of their grandchildren would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of success in achieving generational upward mobility. But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that J.D.'s grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister, and, most of all, his mother struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, never fully escaping the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. With piercing honesty, Vance shows how he himself still carries around the demons of his chaotic family history. A deeply moving memoir, with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. And it is an urgent and troubling meditation on the loss of the American dream for a large segment of this country.

Book excerpt: In Hillbilly elegy, J.D. Vance described how his family moved from poverty to an upwardly mobile clan while navigating the collective demons of the past. The book has come to define Appalachia for much of the nation. This collection of essays is a retort, at turns rigorous, critical, angry, and hopeful, to the long shadow cast over the region and its imagining. But it also moves beyond Vance's book to allow Appalachians to tell their own diverse and complex stories of a place that is at once culturally rich and economically distressed, unique and typically American. -- adapted from back cover

This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1750 a young man boarded a boat traveling alone from France to America. He became friends with a family traveling to America from Germany. During this 6 month journey, he and the young lady of the family he befriended fell in love and married after their arrival to this new country. In France the Shomo name is called "Chaumontet," and Joseph Chaumontet Shomo married Anna Maria "Fricker" from Germany. He, this couple's sons, her brother and others fought in the Revolutionary War for our freedoms. This family first settled in Berks County, PA and attended church near the Reading Railroad. They started their own business. Many of their offspring moved to Shenandoah County, Virginia. From Virginia, some of this family moved to the part of Virginia which later became West Virginia, and many of their descendants fought in the Civil War and many other wars for our freedoms. The descendants who lived in Rowtown (Junior) and Belington in Barbour County, West Virginia were influential in becoming mayors, organizing banks, theaters, coal miner workers and some owned coal mines. Many of these family members were the "pillars of their communities." Some were teachers, postmasters, ministers, farmers, blacksmiths, business owners, home makers, carpenters. Many were members of the Knights of Pythias. Many raised large families. One descendant, Peggy Shomo Joyner wrote a book called "Ancestors and Descendants of Joseph Shomo (Shammo), Immigrant to Pennsylvania, 1750." This book had 439 pages, was published by Gateway Press in 1983, original from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. This book is now out of print. All of the information in this book is a big help to those of us who want to learn more about our Shomo family. Now Stella (Phelps) Forinash has written this 414 page book called "Roots of a Family from West Virginia the "Shomo" Family and is working on another book called "Shomo Family Book 2 - From France and Germany to the USA." Stella was born in Taylor County, WV and lived in Philippi, Barbour County, WV from 1952-1963. Stella is the daughter of Robert I and Vernie B (Shomo) Phelps and the granddaughter of Eugene and Stella (Cross) Shomo. These books are naming the thousands of Shomo descendants from West Virginia and other states with some photos and obituaries which various family members have shared with the public. It is just another tool in our journey to learn more about our family. Stella and her husband, Ken visited Reading, PA in Berks County and New Market, VA in Shenandoah County in 2017. In 2018 Stella fell and broke bones in her left hand while typing and writing this book and was wearing a cast on her left arm. The actual credit for these books go to all of the Shomo descendants who share photos and family information in person, in family Bibles, on Ancestry, Find a Grave, on the Internet, in books, on Facebook as well as to our country's US Federal census records, military records, passenger and Immigration Lists Index from 1500s to 1900s, tax records, church records, public school records, wills, state and county court records, obituaries, etc. Modern DNA is now proving even more about our ancestry. All credit goes to our Creator and His team.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Television is a form of media without equal. It has revolutionized the way we learn about and communicate with the world and has reinvented the way we experience ourselves and others. More than just cheap entertainment, TV is an undeniable component of our culture and contains many clues to who we are, what we value, and where we might be headed in the future. Media historian Gary R. Edgerton follows the technological developments and increasing cultural relevance of TV from its prehistory (before 1947) to the Network Era (1948-1975) and the Cable Era (1976-1994). He begins with the laying of the first telegraph line in 1844, which gave rise to the idea that images and sounds could be transmitted over long distances. He then considers the remodeling of television's look and purpose during World War II; the gender, racial, and ethnic components of its early broadcasts and audiences; its transformation of postwar America; and its function in the political life of the country. He talks of the birth of prime time and cable, the influence of innovators like Sylvester "Pat" Weaver, Roone Arledge, and Ted Turner, as well as television's entrance into the international market, describing the ascent of such programs as Dallas and The Cosby Show, and the impact these exports have had on transmitting American culture abroad. Edgerton concludes with a discerning look at our current Digital Era (1995-present) and the new forms of instantaneous communication that continue to change America's social, political, and economic landscape. Richly researched and engaging, Edgerton's history tracks television's growth into a convergent technology, a global industry, a social catalyst, a viable art form, and a complex and dynamic reflection of the American mind and character. It took only ten years for television to penetrate thirty-five million households, and by 1983, the average home kept their set on for more than seven hours a day. The Columbia History of American Television illuminates our complex relationship with this singular medium and provides historical and critical knowledge for understanding TV as a technology, an industry, an art form, and an institutional force.
