Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Diseases of Florida and Cuba, Compared With Those of California During the months of January and February, 1914, the writer made a trip to Florida and Cuba, for the purpose of collecting bud wood of as many varieties and strains of citrus trees as possible, and to collect information in regard to citrus conditions, especially in regard to citrus diseases. Although much had been written in regard to citrus diseases by workers in California, Florida, and Cuba, some uncertainty still existed as to the identity of some of the important diseases in these places. In some cases, different names were apparently being used for what was thought to be the same disease, and in other cases, the same name was being employed for what appeared to be entirely different diseases It also seemed that certain important diseases of one state were either absent or of minor importance in the others. This resulted in some cases in unnecessary uneasiness and confusion to citrus growers, especially in cases where articles or bulletins written expressly for con ditions in One state, were Copied by the agricultural papers of the others, So far as known, no one acquainted with citrus disease conditions in both Florida and California, had ever made a careful comparative study of them. It, therefore, seemed advisable that this comparative study be made So as to aid the growers and horticultural Officers to know which diseases were different and which were identical, and to enable them to more easily detect at once a new disease, should it by any unsuspected means get into the State. As the writer had been connected with the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, working on citrus diseases for Six years prior to his work in California, it was thought that he was in a position to make this comparative study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stigmonose: A Disease of Carnations and Other Pinks In addition to the above description, these translucent dots may be divided into three classes, representing three forms of the disease, which differ slightly from each other in general appearance and behavior. The first and most common form corresponds with the above description. The translucent dots increase more or less rapidly, according to the age of the leaf, until finally they reach a diameter of one to several milli meters, and Often coalesce. The second form is characterized by the appearance of very small spots, scarcely visible to the naked eye, but easily detected when the leaf is held up to the light and examined with an ordinary hand lens. These small Spots are exceedingly numerous, but in their further development, even on young leaves, scarcely ever reach a diameter of more than half a millimeter. The third form resembles the first in extent of development, but instead of being round, the spots are elongated and irregular, and the affected plants more or less distorted. Dr. Arthur said that in his earlier study of the disease no cause, either parasitic or nonparasitic, could be found to account for the ditti culty. The eye, either unaided or by the assistance of the microscope, All succeeding quotations from these authors are from this bulletin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Fruit Diseases It is the common opinion of authorities that fruit-growers V.lose millions of dollars annually on account of diseases of their crops. It has been estimated that 75 percent of this loss may be prevented by spraying - the chief method of fruit-disease control. In order to understand and to perform properly the measures of fruit-disease control, it is essential that some knowledge of the cause of the disease in hand be acquired. In recent years scientists and laymen alike have recognized the importance of certain technical details regarding the cause in order to undertake the prevention of these losses. Similarly, the value of other facts must be apprehended, such as the history of a disease, where it originated, with what rapidity the pathogene has spread, the losses it is capable of incurring, and under what conditions these destructive outbreaks (epiphytotics) occur. As evidence that the practicing agriculturists are rapidly becoming acquainted with the value of scientific knowledge regarding diseases of plants, it is only necessary to point to their interest and cooperation in the matter of obtaining accurate information under field conditions. The prejudiced and critical attitude of the grower is now for the most part of no consequence. Little self-protection is now needed by the experimental plant pathologist; the growers attitude is no longer antagonistic, but he is friendly and, what is more encouraging, he seeks with confidence the advice of the phytopathologist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fungus Diseases of Coffee in Porto Rico On examination, the threads of the fungus which cause the disease will be found on the lower side of the twigs where at each pair of leaves it branches to form a thin web covering their undersurfaces. On the newly attacked leaves this web is white, but later it becomes brown. The leaves on which the fungus has obtained a better foot hold and which have turned black often have a finely mottled ap pearance, due to the thickening of the web at the points where it is attached to the leaf. A further stage is represented by the develop ment of the web into a parchment-like membrane completely con cealing the lower side of the leaf. This may be removed with a needle or knife point like a piece of gold beater's skin. The webs correspond to the feeding form of the fungus, serving to absorb food material from the leaves; the threads to the traveling form, by the extension of which along the stems and branches in the course of growth it reaches fresh material on which to feed. The threads which are at first white become brown after a time, break and fall away, but fragments often remain, sometimes concealed by the bark, which serve as new sources of infection. Vlhen examined micro scopically the dense places are seen to be made up of flattened, much branched threads, which besides acting as holdfasts may also serve to draw food material from the leaf, although the threads which penetrate the leaf soon after it is attacked are probably more impor tant in food absorption. No spores or reproductive bodies have been found in the Porto Rican fungus. The vegetative hyphae of the webs are much branched and interlaced, the branching being often at right angles. (pl.
