Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romaunt of the Rose translates in abridged form a long dream vision, part elegant romance, part rollicking satire, written in France during the thirteenth century. The French original, Le Roman de la Rose, had a profound influence on Chaucer, who says he translated the work. From the sixteenth century to the mid-nineteenth, scholars assumed that the Romaunt comprised large fragments of that translation. Subsequent debates have divided the Romaunt into two or three segments, and proffered arguments that Chaucer was responsible for one or more of them, or for none. The current consensus is that he almost certainly wrote the first 1,705 lines. Charles Dahlberg’s edition of the Romaunt provides a full summary of scholarship on the question of authorship as well as other important topics, including a useful survey of the influence of the French poem on Chaucer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Rennie Short maintains that the "new world order" is neither new nor orderly. His book, New Worlds, New Geographies, connects global change, urban transformation, and scholarly integrity. The disintegration of the comforting illusion that the present is just a continuation of the past demands a closer evaluation of how to live one's life in the fragmented, chaotic world of postmodemity and the current distrust of rationality and progress. In a personal yet analytical style, Short elucidates the struggles of governments and individuals to situate themselves within changing nation states and the restructurings of urban spaces into a kind of global village. Short insists that it is the responsibility of academics to help make order out of the chaos of postmodemity and make sense of the relationships between people and the environment, the social and the spatial, the structural and the personal. From the restructuring of a "new world order" to the reappraisal of the role of academics, this accessible collection of essays calls for a "progressive human geography" to help cope with the political changes of a postmodern age. New Worlds, New Geographies represents a reluctant postmodernist and resident alien's attempt to make sense of a changing world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chaucer's Romaunt of the Rose, Vol. 1 of 3: And Other Poems It is a natural and generous wish that il lustrions men, the ornaments of their several ages and countries, whom Nature, by en dowing with kindred minds and her highest intellectual gifts, would seem to have destined for friends, should have been acquainted with each other; and that the admiration in spired by their respective Works should have been warmed and strengthened by personal afi'ection. This universal feeling j ustifies more attention to the supposed friendship of Chau cer and Petrarch than a merely speculative question would otherwise deserve. After a knight has achieved the Order of the Crown and the Order of the Sword, he must then begin his training in the virtues of wisdom and justice in order to achieve the Order of the Rose, the highest of all orders. This is the third tale of Sir Pirvan the Wayward, whose reluctant and inauspicious beginnings bore few clues to his potential as a knight of the highest order. In a time when others of Solamnia had become corrupt and self-serving, Sir Pirvan maintained the dignity of the Order, walking the fine line between personal codes of honor and loyalty, and diplomacy and duty. Roland J. Green is the author of the Starcruiser Shenandoah and Wandor series and numerous Conan novels, and is coauthor (with Jerr Pournelle) of the Jannisaries series. The Warriors series details the exploits of the heroes and villains of the War of the Lance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romaunt of the Rose (the Romaunt) is a partial translation into Middle English of the French allegorical poem, le Roman de la Rose (le Roman). Originally believed to be the work of Chaucer, the Romaunt inspired controversy among 19th-century scholars when parts of the text were found to differ in style from Chaucer's other works. Also the text was found to contain three distinct fragments of translation. Together, the fragments--A, B, and C--provide a translation of approximately one-third of Le Roman. There is little doubt that Chaucer did translate Le Roman de la Rose under the title The Romaunt of the Rose: in The Legend of Good Women, the narrator, Chaucer, states as much. The question is whether the surviving text is the same one that Chaucer wrote. The authorship question has been a topic of research and controversy. As such, scholarly discussion of the Romaunt has tended toward linguistic rather than literary analysis. Scholars today generally agree that only fragment A is attributable to Chaucer, although fragment C closely resembles Chaucer's style in language and manner. Fragment C differs mainly in the way that rhymes are constructed. And where fragments A and C adhere to a London dialect of the 1370s, Fragment B contains forms characteristic of a northern dialect.
