Book excerpt: From New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller M.J. Rose comes a provocative and moving story of a young female architect in post-World War II Manhattan, who stumbles upon a hidden treasure and begins a journey to discovering her mother’s life during the fall of the Romanovs. Sophia Moon had always been reticent about her life in Russia and when she dies, suspiciously, on a wintry New York evening, Isobelle despairs that her mother’s secrets have died with her. But while renovating the apartment they shared, Isobelle discovers something among her mother’s effects—a stunning silver tiara, stripped of its jewels. Isobelle’s research into the tiara’s provenance draws her closer to her mother’s past—including the story of what became of her father back in Russia, a man she has never known. The facts elude her until she meets a young jeweler, who wants to help her but is conflicted by his loyalty to the Midas Society, a covert international organization whose mission is to return lost and stolen antiques, jewels, and artwork to their original owners. Told in alternating points of view, the stories of the two young women unfurl as each struggles to find their way during two separate wars. In 1915, young Sofiya Petrovitch, favorite of the royal household and best friend of Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, tends to wounded soldiers in a makeshift hospital within the grounds of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg and finds the love of her life. In 1948 New York, Isobelle Moon works to break through the rampant sexism of the age as one of very few women working in a male-dominated profession and discovers far more about love and family than she ever hoped for. In M.J. Rose’s deftly constructed narrative, the secrets of Sofiya’s early life are revealed incrementally, even as Isobelle herself works to solve the mystery of the historic Romanov tiara (which is based on an actual Romanov artifact that is, to this day, still missing)—and how it is that her mother came to possess it. The two strands play off each other in finely-tuned counterpoint, building to a series of surprising and deeply satisfying revelations.

Book excerpt: The lives of the tsars and their subjects from 1855 to 1918, told through rare archival photographs The Russian Empire was among the most mysterious of the world’s great powers, profoundly torn between a rural population living almost medieval lives and industrial and social change in the cities. The tsar’s gigantic realm struggled with the advent of modernity and with its own internal contradictions between Asia and Europe, faith and science, different ethnic groups, and the divergent interests of the aristocracy, the middle classes, the urban workers, and the rural poor: a continent of contradictions from abject poverty to fairy-tale wealth captured by authors from Tolstoy to Chekhov, from Gogol to Gorky. Twilight of the Romanovs opens a door into the world of pre-revolutionary Russia using original photographs taken during the last decades of Romanov rule. They include remarkable color images created using an early three-color-plate technique that brings the remote past to life. Our companions on this journey include the Scottish photographer William Carrick, Americans George Kennan and Murray Howe, the German-Russian Carl Bulla, Sergey Produkin-Gorsky, and the writers Leonid Andreyev and Anton Chekhov, together with many anonymous others. These photographs are snapshots of a vanished world, yet they reveal a surprising continuity: despite the subsequent revolution, faces, buildings, and landscapes still resonate with those who see them a century and more later.

Book excerpt: The Romanov dynasty ruled Russia for a little over three hundred years and their story, ending with their tragic deaths, has exerted a lasting fascination. This new book, an album of pictures gathered by the author over many years - the majority of which are unpublished - shows the extended Romanov family. There are formal portraits taken to celebrate comings of age, weddings or other family gatherings, but also pictures of the various members of the dynasty at their ease, or dressed up for formal banquets, balls or ceremonies of state. Children play or take rides in horse-carts, mothers tend their children, brothers and sisters walk in the gardens of the grand palaces in which they lived - Gatchina, Ilinskoie, the Alexander Palace. The photographs range from the 1860s, when Alexander II was Tsar, through the reigns of his son, and grandson to the 1930s, when remaining members of the dynasty could be found in the outposts of Europe. people's perception of the monarchy: for the first time ordinary people could see exactly what their monarch looked like, and they became aware of them as human beings - who were confident or shy before the camera, and whose children frowned, sulked or fidgeted. It was perhaps just such familiarity, rather than the deference of the subject, that contributed in part to their downfall

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1918, Tsar Nicholas II, his Tsarina Alexandra and their five children were executed by firing squad at Ekaterinburg. The unique and revealing photographs in this book illustrate the intimate family life of the last ruling Romanovs from 1896, shortly after the marriage of Nicholas and Alexandra, to the family's house arrest at Tsarskoye Selo palace in 1917, shortly before their death. These photographs have been selected from thousands taken by the Tsarina and her five children, which were mounted in their own and the Tsars personal albums. The albums have until now remained hidden for over seventy years in government archives in Moscow. Whilst researching his book Imperial Palaces of Russia in the Autumn of 1990, Prince Michael of Greece was puzzled by an invitation to view material in the government archives. Thirty thick, leather-bound volumes, embossed with the Imperial monogram, awaited him - the private photograph albums, which the curators wanted to show first to a relative of the Romanov family. Through his selection of images from the family albums, the author here tells the story of the last Tsar, one of the saddest of twentieth-century politics. Nicholas II was a man both unprepared and ill equipped to rule the greatest empire in the world, and under the influence of Alexandra, the wife he so adored, he led Russia to disaster. But theirs was also an extraordinary love story, as the three hundred photographs in this book reveal. Away from the responsibilities of Empire, we see a close and loving family of simple tastes and great candour. The photographs clearly illustrate the personalities of Nicholas and Alexandra and of their four daughters - Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia - and beloved son and heir Alexis, who suffered from haemophilia and whose every move was carefully watched. The family were keen, and sometimes talented, amateur photographers, who took their own cameras with them everywhere, be it on family picnics or on state occasions. The book thus illustrates a fascinating transition from the joy and relaxation of the early years, through the tension caused by the Tsarevich's illness, to the stresses and anxiety of the First World War and the coming Revolution. These photographs provide a new perspective on the life of the Imperial family, and constitute an invaluable historical document.

Book excerpt: A searing, emotional and inspiring memoir, The Family Album: Reminiscing About the Past tells the story of a resilient family living in Russia during some of the country’s darkest and most difficult history. With photographs dating from the end of the 19th to the end of the 20th century, the book tells the powerful and sometimes heartbreaking stories of four families trying to survive during the Russian Revolution, the Great Purge and The Great Patriotic War. With skilful and engaging storytelling, this memoir details the rich history of the time through photos while telling personal stories, such as how the author’s own father perished while fighting for his country and how she and her mother survived the Leningrad Blockade. Despite the hardships faced by the family, this book still brims with hope, enthusiasm and patriotism and offers its readers an uplifting lesson in history and the strength of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: Between 1889 and 1913 Nicholas II, Grand Duke and Heir to the Throne, later Tsar of Russia, personally catalogued his priceless jewelry in a small notebook as a record of his extensive collection. That he did so with genuine appreciation and Fondness, and with the methodical diligence of an accountant, is evident in his record -- having carefully numbered the more than 300 pieces (some of which were one-of-a-kind creations by Faberge or Cartier), he painted a miniature watercolor of each item. This exquisite album, re-discovered in the archives of the Kremlin Museums in Moscow, is reproduced here as a facsimile for the first time, and accompanied by unpublished private photos of the Russian Imperial Family. As Alexander yon Solodkoff notes in his introduction, these photographs "as opposed to the large quantity of stiff official portraits...show the personality and the private life of the Tsar and those who were close to him."

Book excerpt: This volume is a reproduction of two photograph albums belonging to the Russian Imperial Family, some of which were taken by Tsar Nicholas II's daughters, as well as by the Tsar himself. The first album, created by the Grand Duchess Maria, contains 40 b&w personal photographs, previously unpublished, of Imperial life. The second, which belonged to the Tsarina Alexandra, has some 30 photographs, unseen until now, of the Romanovs at work with their subjects and relaxing at home and on their estates. An additional 30 rare prints complete this record of a priviliged era that vanished in 1918. These albums are part of the estate of the Romanov historian, James Blair Lovell, passed on to him by Gleb Borkin, the son of the family doctor who was executed with the Imperial Family in 1918. Many of the photographs are accompanied by captions translated from the original Russian. This text gives detail on their social, historical and political background. When James Blair Lovell died in 1994, he left an important archive of Romanov documents and artefacts.
