A coalition government was formed under General Antonescue who proved to be one of Germany's most effective military allies. The Romanian army saw extensive action and suffered terrible losses in operation Odessa and at Stalingrad. By 1944 the Soviets were within the Romanian borders and the King sued for peace. Book Synopsis The German Russian War, 1941-1945 by : Augustin Guillaume
Download or read book The German Russian War, 1941-1945 written by Augustin Guillaume and published by Naval & Military Press. This book was released on 1956 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interestingly this title, produced by the British War Office in 1956, was written by General Guillaume of the French Army. Nevertheless it is a first class overview of the whole of Operation Barbarossa, and is more than amply illustrated by a collection of 63 sketch maps detailing important battles and movements throughout the campaign. Planning is dealt with only briefly, and the book really gets going with a description of the Battle for Moscow in the winter of 1941/42. It then looks at the defence of Leningrad before racing forward to the Battle of Stalingrad. Details are then given of the fighting in the Caucasus. It is a treatment of the most important factors in the campaign from a military viewpoint, and there is no padding in this book at all. Part Two deals with the situation in the spring of 1943 and looks then in detail at the Battle of Kursk. Following the German failure there, the Russians advanced on Orel and Kharkov, sealing the strategic fate of Germany in the war. 1944 and the German withdrawal is treated by means of descriptions of Ten battles of destruction ending in late 1944. Finally the author analyses the German collapse in 1945. Throughout there are commentaries and analyses which help the reader to an understanding of not just what went on, but why things went so wrong for the Germans. This is an important text for the student of this enormous campaign, and cannot be ignored.

Book Synopsis Final Report by : International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania
Download or read book Final Report written by International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Commission on the Holocaust in Romania was established in October 2003 on the initiative of Ion Iliescu, the President of Romania; this final report was presented to him in November 2004. The aim of the Commission was to research the facts and determine the truth about the Holocaust in Romania during World War II. The report examines various aspects of the state-organized participation of Romania in the mass murder of Jews in Romania and in Romanian-controlled territories, as well as in northern Transylvania where the genocide was perpetrated by the Nazis and their Hungarian allies. Inter alia, it discusses antisemitism and the evolution of Romanian anti-Jewish policies from the late 1930s to 1944, the impact of the Soviet annexation of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina on antisemitism in Romania, anti-Jewish incidents in 1940 and the pogroms in Bucharest and Iaşi, mass murders of Jews in the recaptured provinces and deportation to Transnistria in 1941, mass murder of Jews in Odessa and in Transnistrian camps, the "Romanianization" of the economy and the expropriation of Romanian Jews, the reaction of the Jewish community in Romania to anti-Jewish policies, and the personal responsibility of Ion Antonescu for the genocide. Relates, also, to war crimes trials held in Romania, and to the trivialization of the Holocaust and its "selective" and outright denial in postwar Romania.
Book Synopsis Post-Communist Mafia State by : B lint Magyar
Download or read book Post-Communist Mafia State written by B lint Magyar and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having won a two-third majority in Parliament at the 2010 elections, the Hungarian political party Fidesz removed many of the institutional obstacles of exerting power. Just like the party, the state itself was placed under the control of a single individual, who since then has applied the techniques used within his party to enforce submission and obedience onto society as a whole. In a new approach the author characterizes the system as the ?organized over-world?, the ?state employing mafia methods? and the ?adopted political family', applying these categories not as metaphors but elements of a coherent conceptual framework. The actions of the post-communist mafia state model are closely aligned with the interests of power and wealth concentrated in the hands of a small group of insiders. While the traditional mafia channeled wealth and economic players into its spheres of influence by means of direct coercion, the mafia state does the same by means of parliamentary legislation, legal prosecution, tax authority, police forces and secret service. The innovative conceptual framework of the book is important and timely not only for Hungary, but also for other post-communist countries subjected to autocratic rules. ÿ

Book excerpt: Volume 1, Weaving the Tangled Web: Military Deception in Large-Scale Combat Operations surveys twelve cases of MILDEC from World War I through Desert Storm focusing on how armies have successfully used preconceptions to either immobilize an opponent or force the expenditure of energy in unproductive directions. The case studies span the major wars of the twentieth-century from the perspectives of several great powers and offer both a primer for planners of military deception and a caution for all military personnel to remain constantly on guard for practitioners of this ancient art.
