Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History England, Vol. 1 of 3 The following Tales are all founded upon facts in English history. The aid of fiction has, indeed, been made use of, but no important historical event has been falsified; and where the Author has wandered farthest from strict fact, he has yet endeavoured to be true to the spirit and manners of the age in which the scene is laid. It will also be found, that the most marvellous and improbable of the events narrated in these volumes, are by no means the least authentic. "Le vrai," says a French author, "n'est pas toujours le vraisemblable." A few of the Tales refer rather to the history of foreign nations than of England, as "The Rings" does to that of France, and "The Starry Tower" to that of Spain; all, however, have some degree of reference to English history, and if in one or two instances the reader should find this link of conexion a somewhat slight one, it is hoped that the historiette will not, on that account, be condemned, if in other respects it should merit approbation. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contribution to the global history of ideas uses biographical profiles of 18th-century contemporaries to find what Salafist and Sufi Islam, Evangelical Protestant and Jansenist Catholic Christianity, and Hasidic Judaism have in common. Such figures include Muḥammad Ibn abd al-Waḥhab, Count Nikolaus Zinzendorf, Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Israel Ba’al Shem Tov. The book is a unique and comprehensive study of the conflicted relationship between the “evangelical” movements in all three Abrahamic religions and the ideas of the Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment. Centered on the 18th century, the book reaches back to the third century for precedents and context, and forward to the 21st for the legacy of these movements. This text appeals to students and researchers in many fields, including Philosophy and Religion, their histories, and World History, while also appealing to the interested lay reader.

Such swift transi tions, strange adventures, and moving tragedies, related of ordinary mortals, would give their biographies a fascination that is raised to intensity when the persons concerned are Sovereign rulers. Placed high above us, on a stage as it were, under fierce lights, and with the world for an audience, their words and actions, which moulded the destinies of nations and left indelible traces on their time, must be listened to and watched with abiding interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henry the Eighth and His Court: An Historical Romance Is the Opinion of the authoress of this volume, the province of the Historical Romance is to show you the heart of history, and to bring near to you what else would stand so far off. Although some of its objects may be to throw light on the dark places of history, to group historical characters according to their internal natures, and to discover and expose the motives which impelled individual person ages to the performance of great acts, yet others more important re main. One of these is the presentation of history in a dramatic form and with'animated descriptions. It is of less consequence whether the personages actually spoke the words or performed the acts attributed to them; but it is nemary that those words and deeds should be in accordance with the spirit and character of such his torical personages, and nothing be attributed to them which they could not have spoken or done. The circumstances and events pre sented must be in accordance with historical tradition. Subsequent investigations, since these pages were given to the press, may have modified the historical aspect'of the character of Henry VIII., but it is sumcient to say that these were unknown at the time when the work was written, and the aim of the authoress has been to delineate that character as represented by the standard English historians.
