Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of 27 Baptist preachers regarding their leadership style and the organizational status of their churches in one southern state. Research questions focused on how the pastors described their leadership style, the organizational status of their church as growing, plateaued, declining, facing the end-of-life cycle or revitalized, and how pastors perceived leadership style and skills influenced the growth status of their churches. The theoretical framework for this study included transformational leadership and systems theory. Data collection included participants completing the MLQ (5X) Short and a general information questionnaire. Seven pastors participated in individual interviews. Additionally, archived data from the Texas Baptist Convention and researcher field notes were also used as data collection instruments. Descriptive statistics were calculated for pastor MLQ (5X) scores and thematic coding conducted on interview transcripts. Results of the study revealed 29% of participants perceived their leadership style as transformational, whereas 71% of participants indicated their leadership style as laissez-faire or management-by-exception. Results also indicated that pastors perceived 33.3% of their churches as growing and 12.5% in decline. Pastors viewed church growth more as the spiritual growth and development of congregants rather than growth in tithes, offerings, and membership. Pastors viewed the key traits of a successful church leader as one who focuses on bible-based preaching and growing of disciples. Results provided important information to Baptist church leadership teams who are striving to reverse the trend of declining and plateaued churches in this Texas City.

Book excerpt: Statistics show that America’s non-religious population is on the rise, and membership in American churches is in decline, with an estimated 65% to 80% of all churches in the United States either plateauing or declining. Churches are closing rapidly, affecting thousands of congregations, especially in rural communities. However, some leaders of plateauing and declining rural churches are resilient and rejuvenate their local congregations. Unfortunately, many rural pastors are unprepared for rural ministry and cannot turnaround their churches from declining to experience stability, grow, and thrive. The researcher explored a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to study the lived experiences of pastors and lay leaders in rural Central Illinois turnaround churches. These rural turnaround pastors and lay leaders from across three denominations experienced atypical pattern of revitalization and used similar language to describe their experiences. The research confirmed that these rural Central Illinois turnaround pastors are transformational leaders. The turnaround pastors in this research led with a sheer commitment to faithfully carry out the works of ministry, were impactful in their preaching, encouraged growth in individual spirituality and relationship with God among their members, fostered connections and interpersonal relationships within their congregations, demonstrated genuine passion in their pastoral care, communicated change and cast visions effectively, and created an atmosphere of effective communications within their congregations. These turnaround pastors empowered their lay leaders, built trust, and fostered teamwork that increased their community engagement. The qualities demonstrated by these turnaround pastors provide two tools for pastors who are called or appointed to rural communities: A self-assessment evaluative tool and a training and equipping tool on how to lead plateauing and dying rural churches to experience a turnaround. The research shows that with turnaround leaders serving in willing congregations, declining rural churches can revive, grow, and fulfill their missional calling.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church is an example of churches facing this challenge. The researcher was interested in examining the role of transformational leadership in preparing youth as future church leaders. The leadership model was considered to be suitable since it has the potential to encourage youth to attend church and to participate in leadership roles. A case study approach was adopted for this project. Seven pastors and seven youth were interviewed. A self-developed interview protocol was used to gather data from the participants. The project further included review of biblical passages and relevant literature concerning the topic of transformational leadership. The results revealed that transformational leadership practices, such as: empowerment, delegation, appreciation, encouragement of creativity, and articulation of clear goals have the potential to encourage more youth to take up church-related roles and to increase their church attendance. So this project is really a work in progress. With this small beginning, it is hoped that other church leaders will be empowered to help in the implementation of this work and engage in more research as we seek to empower our youthful congregants. Rev. Dr. Michael Kiju Paul was born in Kajokeji, South Sudan. His parents were members of the Episcopal Church and his early life was influenced by their faith and that of his maternal grandmother who played a big role in his early upbringing. Michael obtained B.A. in Theology (1995), M. A. in Missiology (1997), M.A. in Theological Studies (2000), M.A. in Pastoral Care & Counseling (2011), and Doctorate, Bethel University, St. Paul, MN, (2020).
