Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled "The Role of Phonological Awareness in Native and Second Language Reading Development" Submitted by Li Miu Ying, Miriam for the degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in June 2006 In recent years, there has been a great deal of work devoted to the study of component skills that are necessary to sustain a success in reading English and Chinese. Phonological awareness is found to be a critical component of reading development. This study examined the role of phonological awareness in second language reading st th development. The subjects were 20 1 and 4 graders in Hong Kong, whose native spoken language is Cantonese. Children's performance on both English and Chinese reading ability and phonological awareness were examined. Results of hierarchical regression analyses and Pearson correlations showed that (a) phonological awareness at onset-rime level predicts English reading success at lower grade; (b) phonological awareness at phoneme level predicts English reading success at higher grade; (c) onset-rime and phonemic awareness both predict Chinese reading in grade 1; (d) phonemic awareness better predicts Chinese reading than onset-rime awareness in grade 4. The results support the notion that individual differences in alphabetic reading ability are accounted for by variances in phonological processing abilities, and that awareness of larger sound units (onset-rime) plays a more important role in earlier stage and awareness of smaller sound units (phoneme) in later stage. In contrast, the current study reported that onset-rime awareness does not play a more significant role in Chinese reading than phonemic awareness, which is inconsistent with that reported in Siok and Fletcher's (2001) study. This finding was taken to suggest that there is cross language transfer of metalinguistic skills in Hong Kong Chinese-English bilingual children. These students, many of whom enter school without being able to speak English, are expected to perform at grade level while simultaneously learning to speak, read, and write in a new language. However, data reveal a widening gap between the reading achievement of native speakers and students who speak English as a second language. In short, ELLs (English Language Learners) are struggling to achieve grade-level reading proficiency. While researchers in first language (L1) reading acquisition have investigated extensively the mechanisms involved in how children learn to read in their first language, second language (L2) reading research has only recently become its own discipline. Investigations in L1 reading have provided much of the research for L2 reading. Identifying the necessary components and effective instruction for improving the reading achievement of L2 learners is no small feat. Reading is a multidimensional process for first language learners, but this process becomes even more complex when considering the myriad of factors involved in second language reading: linguistic differences, literacy background, language exposure, oral language proficiency, etc. Much research has targeted the components of reading—this research indicates that phonological awareness and oral language skills are especially critical during the early stages of reading and beyond. In this essay, I define reading and illustrate the processes involved in fluent reading. I also present leading models of L1 and L2 reading. I describe the dual nature of L2 reading and synthesize current findings on L2 reading development. Next, I investigate research on the effects of phonological awareness and oral language on L1 and L2 reading achievement. Lastly, I suggest appropriate instruction to support the growth of phonological awareness and oral language for ELLs in a K-3 classroom.

It is therefore an important societal responsibility to offer every person the opportunity to become a skilled reader, and in many cases, this means becoming a skilled L2 reader.” (GRABE 2009: 6) As GRABE reveals with his statement, reading has become an indispensable language skill not only in an individual’s mother tongue, but preferably also in its acquired foreign language, without which it is difficult, if not impossible to make career nowadays. Wherever we go outside our homes, we will see and read print, even so in more deprived areas, such as on hiking trails, where instead of advertising wallpapers we are likely to encounter signposts that guide us. Since information transfer is reserved to both oral and written communication in modern society, reading remains the only option to decode writing. However, developing reading skills is more than just improving one’s word recognition and decoding abilities. GRABE points out that “most words build phonological activation prior to lexical access” (2009: 24) in the word recognition process that combines the interactive areas of orthography, phonology and meaning. This characteristic of reading allows for unconscious pronunciation drilling and training even though it can be assumed that readers will occasionally consciously check the pronunciation of certain unfamiliar words. Whether or not supported by conscious learning, reading seemingly prepares learners for oral communication by maintaining constant phonological activation. Moreover, recognized words in the reading process are supposed to transmit some activation energy to their “semantic neighbours in the lexical network when they are accessed.” (GRABE 2009: 25/26) Known as the notion of spreading activation (GRABE 2009: 25), this phenomenon suggests that reading establishes a cognitive network of connotations that learners acquire to broaden their lexis for idiomatic application in communicative contexts. As one may quickly realize, reading involves learning about both language and content, which is why it simply must be part of a regular English lesson. Therefore, the research question addressed in this paper is what English language teachers should keep in mind when developing reading tasks for both First (L1) and Second Language Learners (L2).

Book excerpt: There is evidence that phonological memory skills contribute to the learning of unfamiliar phonological sequences in English-as-a-first-language (EL1) children (Baddeley, Gathercole, & Papagno, 1998) and older English-as-a-second-language (ESL) children (Service, 1992; Service & Kohonen, 1995). The present study investigated the specificity of the role of phonological memory skills in the vocabulary development of young ESL learners. Ninety-eight first-graders, 40 EL1 children and 58 native speakers of Punjabi learning English as a second language participated in a longitudinal study. Measures of phonological memory, phonological awareness, vocabulary, and word recognition were administered at age 6 and again 1.5 years later. With the exception of a phonological memory task consisting of Hebrew pseudowords (administered for the purposes of reducing the influence of existing long-term phonological knowledge on performance), all other tasks used English-language stimuli. Cross-lagged correlational and hierarchical regression analyses suggest that the ability to repeat unfamiliar phonological sequences, a measure of phonological memory, is a significant predictor of later vocabulary knowledge in EL1 and ESL children alike. Commonality analyses further suggest that for both native and second-language learners, the role played by phonological memory skills in vocabulary development is largely independent of other phonological processing skills such as phonological awareness. Parallels are drawn between the interrelatedness of phonological memory and phonological awareness skills in explaining vocabulary development and in explaining reading development. These results extend the already established link between phonological memory skills and native vocabulary development to the realm of second-language learning. The present findings also suggest that the role played by phonological memory skills continues to be critical in vocabulary development into the early elementary school years.
