Book excerpt: Deciphering terrestrial climatic conditions in marine sediments as well as overall terrestrial contributions to carbon preservation in continental margins requires that the biogeochemical signatures faithfully record vegetation and soil organic matter compositions of the watershed from which it was derived. How these compounds change from the time of their formation to their export and burial in marine environments is poorly constrained. This research addressed changes in organic matter-clay mineral systems in response to sorption of lignin phenols, desorption through a salinity gradient, and secondary uptake of amino acids. Scaling up from single clay mineral and lignin phenol standards to heterogeneous systems using plant leachates and soils of contrasting mineralogy, provided supporting evidence that clay minerals present in these soils do, in fact, contribute significantly to OC and lignin phenol sorption. The fact that kaolinite and montmorillonite sorbed similar quantities across these different particle systems despite differences in mineral specific surface area, suggests that mineral-specific reactivity may be more important than typically considered. Further contrasts in how lignin phenols desorbed from these two minerals highlights an additional control on OM compositions and source and diagenetic information derived from lignin phenols preserved in continental margin sediments. Retention of lignin phenols on mineral surfaces (~60% of initial amounts sorbed, effectively priming the surfaces) resulted in 2-3 times more glutamic acid sorbed relative to mineral surfaces without lignin phenol-priming. As such, the cumulative history that OM-clay mineral particles experience, ultimately determines their reactivity in continental margin sediments. Continental margin sediments apparently contain much less terrestrial organic matter than can be accounted for based on inputs, and thus may reflect enhanced burial of marine organic matter due to assistance from terrestrial-primed mineral surfaces. An overarching finding of this research is that particulate OM-clay mineral systems undergo molecular-level fractionation at all stages of processing from terrestrial source to depositional zones in continental margins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pyrethroid insecticides are hydrophobic organic compounds that have been widely detected in sediments at concentrations that cause toxicity to aquatic organisms. The main hypothesis of this dissertation is that the fate and transport of pyrethroid insecticides in the environment will be dominated by sorption to and desorption from sediments and soils. The goal of this research was to better characterize these processes by performing sorption and desorption rate studies, as well as sorption equilibrium experiments. This information is essential to reliably predicting ecotoxicity and downstream transport of these compounds. Batch reactor isotherm experiments were performed with two pyrethroids using suspended material and bed sediment from the Sacramento River, CA. The Freundlich isotherm model was fit to the data and Freundlich exponents indicated sorption nonlinearity for some experimental conditions. Calculated organic carbon normalized distribution coefficients were larger than those previously reported in the literature by approximately an order of magnitude. Higher than expected sorption to these materials was explained by adsorption to mineral surfaces and black carbon, with the mineral surface accounting for the largest portion. Sorption to mineral phases may be more important than previously thought for pyrethroids, especially for sediments with low organic carbon contents. Isomerization of lambda-cyhalothrin was observed in batch reactor sorption rate studies and a combined model incorporating a two site sorption term and a linear isomerization term was fit to the data. It appeared that isomerization occurred more rapidly or exclusively in the aqueous phase. The stereoisomers range in biological activity, thus isomerization could potentially increase or decrease toxicity. Desorption experiments were performed with three sorbents, three aging times, and four pyrethroids; a biphasic rate model was fit to these data. Suspended solids from irrigation runoff water collected from a field sprayed with permethrin one day prior were used to compare the rates of desorption of field-applied pyrethroids to those of laboratory spikes. Rapid desorption of field-applied permethrin was not statistically different than laboratory spiked permethrin. The sorbent had the greatest effect on desorption rate parameters, while significant differences in desorption were not observed among several pyrethroids, nor for aging times of 1-28 d.

Book excerpt: A substantial increase in the number of studies using the optical properties (absorbance and fluorescence) of dissolved organic matter (DOM) as a proxy for its chemical properties in estuaries and the coastal and open ocean has occurred during the last decade. We are making progress on finding the actual chemical compounds or phenomena responsible for DOM’s optical properties. Ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry, in particular, has made important progress in making the key connections between optics and chemistry. But serious questions remain and the last major special issue on DOM optics and chemistry occurred nearly 10 years ago. Controversies remain from the non-specific optical properties of DOM that are not linked to discrete sources, and sometimes provide conflicting information. The use of optics, which is relatively easier to employ in synoptic and high resolution sampling to determine chemistry, is a critical connection to make and can lead to major advances in our understanding of organic matter cycling in all aquatic ecosystems. The contentions and controversies raised by our poor understanding of the linkages between optics and chemistry of DOM are bottlenecks that need to be addressed and overcome.
