Book Synopsis Siliciclastic Diagenesis and Fluid Flow by : Laura J. Crossey
Download or read book Siliciclastic Diagenesis and Fluid Flow written by Laura J. Crossey and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research in the area of siliciclastic diagenesis has historically incorporated advances in related disciplines such as petrography and petrophysics, mineralogy, geochemistry, organic geochemistry, stratigraphy and basin analysis, and more recently, fluid flow. While the collection of papers in this publication covers a broad range of topics, an underlying theme is the importance of fluid flow in diagenetic processes. The mineralogy, texture and geochemistry of authigenic minerals provide constraints for fluid flow models, while formation waters provide modern snapshots of pore fluid evolution. Separated into two sections (Part I: Concepts and Part II: Applications), conceptual and practical applications are both represented.

Book Synopsis Temper Sands in Prehistoric Oceanian Pottery by : William R. Dickinson
Download or read book Temper Sands in Prehistoric Oceanian Pottery written by William R. Dickinson and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Oceanian ceramic cultures making earthenware pottery spread during the past 3500 years through a dozen major island groups spanning 6000 km of the tropical Pacific Ocean from western Micronesia to western Polynesia. Island potters mixed sand as temper into clay bodies during ceramic manufacture. The nature of island sands is governed by the geotectonics of hotspot chains, island arcs, subduction zones, backarc basins, and remnant arcs as well as by sedimentology. Because small islands with bedrock exposures of restricted character are virtual point sources of sand, many tempers are diagnostic of specific islands. Petrographic study of temper sands in thin section allows distinction between indigenous pottery and exotic pottery transported from elsewhere. Study of 2223 prehistoric Oceanian potsherds from 130 islands and island clusters indicates the nature of Oceanian temper types and documents 105 cases of interisland transport of ceramics over distances typically

Download or read book Geochemistry written by Harry Y. McSween and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written expressly for undergraduate and graduate geologists, this book focuses on how geochemical principles can be used to solve practical problems. The attention to problem-solving reflects the authors'belief that showing how theory is useful in solving real-life problems is vital for learning. The book gives students a thorough grasp of the basic principles of the subject, balancing the traditional equilibrium perspective and the kinetic viewpoint. The first half of the book considers processes in which temperature and pressure are nearly constant. After introductions to the laws of thermodynamics, to fundamental equations for flow and diffusion, and to solution chemistry, these principles are used to investigate diagenesis, weathering, and natural waters. The second half of the book applies thermodynamics and kinetics to systems undergoing changes in temperature and pressure during magmatism and metamorphism. This revised edition incorporates new geochemical discoveries as examples of processes and pathways, with new chapters on mineral structure and bonding and on organic matter and biomarkers. Each chapter has worked problems, and the authors assume that the student has had a year of college-level chemistry and a year of calculus. Praise for the first edition "A truly modern geochemistry book.... Very well written and quite enjoyable to read.... An excellent basic text for graduate level instruction in geochemistry." --Journal of Geological Education "An up-to-date, broadly conceived introduction to geochemistry.... Given the recent flowering of geochemistry as an interdisciplinary science, and given the extent to which it now draws upon the fundamentals of thermodynamics and kinetics to understand earth and planetary processes, this timely and rigorous [book] is welcome indeed." --Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta
