Book Synopsis Dance Rhythms of the French Baroque by : Betty Bang Mather
Download or read book Dance Rhythms of the French Baroque written by Betty Bang Mather and published by Music: Scholarship and Perform. This book was released on 1987 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dance Music of the French Baroque brings together information on rhythm from the interrelated fields of music, dance, poetry, rhetoric, and philosophy. Part I is devoted to the various factors involved in dance rhythms, including tempos, rhythmic feet, dance steps, declamation of lyrics, instrumental articulation, and performance of ornaments. Part II describes in alphabetic order the fifteen most frequently encountered dances of the period and identifies the most typical performance of each in relation to the factors discussed in Part I. With reference to numerous illustrations and musical examples, it clearly conveys the manner in which the allemandes, bourées, chaconnes, gigues, etc., may be executed. This practical book presents a myriad of information in a form that is easy to use yet as graceful as the dances it describes.

Book Synopsis Desire and Pleasure in Seventeenth-Century Music by : Susan McClary
Download or read book Desire and Pleasure in Seventeenth-Century Music written by Susan McClary and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Susan McClary examines the mechanisms through which seventeenth-century musicians simulated extreme affective states—desire, divine rapture, and ecstatic pleasure. She demonstrates how every major genre of the period, from opera to religious music to instrumental pieces based on dances, was part of this striving for heightened passions by performers and listeners. While she analyzes the social and historical reasons for the high value placed on expressive intensity in both secular and sacred music, and she also links desire and pleasure to the many technical innovations of the period. McClary shows how musicians—whether working within the contexts of the Reformation or Counter-Reformation, Absolutists courts or commercial enterprises in Venice—were able to manipulate known procedures to produce radically new ways of experiencing time and the Self.

Book Synopsis Livre de Guitarre by : Henry Grenerin
Download or read book Livre de Guitarre written by Henry Grenerin and published by . This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Grenerin (c. 1625-c. 1700) is mentioned as a musicien de la chambre du Roi as early as 1641. It is recorded that he played in court ballets such as Ballet de Psyche in 1656 and Ballet de l'impatience in 1661. In 1668 Grenerin published Livre de theorbe contenant plusieurs pieces, a collection of music for theorbo with instructions on how to play continuo. His book of guitar tablature, Livre de guitarre (Paris, 1680), was dedicated to the Prince de Conty. The Prince de Conty had been one of the leaders of the 'frondes' which was a revolt against Anne of Austria (the mother of Louis XIV) and her minister Cardinal Mazarin. The story of this rebellion is told in a most compelling manner by Voltaire in his book The Age of Louis XIV. This series of uprisings was over by 1654, and one could presume that the Prince de Conty was on good terms with the royal family by the time Grenerin dedicated the book to him in 1680. Grenerin's book of tablature for the guitar consists of sixteen solo suites for guitar and also some pieces for instrumental and vocal ensembles. Following the ensemble pieces are Grenerin's instructions for playing continuo on the guitar. This book also includes notes on the performance of Grenerin's music. These notes to the reader are very concise, and it is mainly a guide to the symbols he used to indicate ornaments.
Book Synopsis Music and Society by : Richard Leppert
Download or read book Music and Society written by Richard Leppert and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-06-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative volume of essays is now available in paperback. The contributors to this volume - musicologists, sociologists, cultural theorists - all challenge the view that music occupies an autonomous aesthetic sphere. Recently, socially and politically grounded enterprises such as feminism, semiotics and deconstruction have effected a major transformation in the ways in which the arts and humanities are studied, leading in turn to a systematic investigation of the implicit assumptions underlying the critical methods of the last two hundred years. Influenced by these approaches, the writers here question a prevailing ideology that insists there is a division between music and society and examine the ways in which the two do in fact interact and mediate one another within and across socio-cultural boundaries.
Download or read book I Wanna be Me written by Theodore Gracyk and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gracyk grapples with the ways that rock shapes--limits and expands--our notions of who we can be in the world. [He] sees rock as a mass art, open-ended and open to diverse (but not unlimited) interpretations. Recordings reach millions, drawing people together in communities of listeners who respond viscerally to its sound and intellectually to its messages. As an art form that proclaims its emotional authenticity and resistance to convention, rock music constitutes part of the cultural apparatus from which individuals mold personal and political identities. Going to the heart of this relationship between the music's role in its performers' and fans' self-construction, Gracyk probes questions of gender and appropriation. How can a feminist be a Stones fan or a straight man enjoy the Indigo Girls? Does borrowing music that carries a "racial identity" always add up to exploitation, a charge leveled at Paul Simon's Graceland? Rang[es] through forty years of rock history and offer[s] a trove of anecdotes"--Publisher description.
