These students faced many barriers to their academic success as they transitioned to college including limited support from family members. This qualitative study utilized a phenomenological approach to understand what role, if any, the support of parents and family helped first-generation students to persist in their academics during the first year of college. Six sophomore first-generation college students from a private Catholic institution in an urban setting in the Midwest were interviewed for the study along with six of their family members. The sophomore first-generation students reflected on their experiences during the first year of college. Participants discussed how they perceived and understood family support in their home life, the relationships between students and parents, and the way students interacted with their peers. Three findings emerged from the research: (1) the support provided by parents was instrumental in helping first-generation college students persist during their first year in school, (2) students and parents understood the college experience from different points of views, resulting in family tension and a "push and pull" dynamic that fostered an educational resilience among the students, (3) parents were more able to support students with financial resources and emotional encouragement and less able to address mental health issues. These findings showed the need for parental programming to support the educational experiences of first-generation college students and mechanisms to help parents become aware of the mental health challenges of students.

Book excerpt: In recent years, an increasing number of first-generation college students have pursued higher education. However, previous studies found that these students are significantly more likely to depart before their second year in college and encounter more challenges that impede them from pursuing a college degree. The purpose of the current study is to examine the role of support factors and the academic and social burden associated with first-generation college students in predicting persistence. The study also examined the role of instructor support and academic self-efficacy in predicting college persistence. A total of 145 first-generation college students completed a survey that assessed family support, instructor support, social support, college persistence, college academic self-efficacy, and academic and social burden. Results revealed that instructor support and social support significantly predicted higher college persistence, and that family support and social support significantly predicted lower academic and social burden. The results also demonstrated that academic self-efficacy predicted college persistence after controlling for support factors and that academic self-efficacy mediated the relationship between instructor support and college persistence. These findings indicate that academic self-efficacy is not a rigid personality trait but can be impacted by a student's college experience, particularly the student's relationship with a trusted instructor. Findings from this research can guide institutions of higher education to implement programs and practices to help more first-generation college students realize their academic dreams and goals.

Book excerpt: Those from marginalized populations, many of whom are first-generation college students (FGCS), often face barriers to accessing secondary education (Pitre & Pitre, 2009). Additionally, when students from such groups do successfully enroll in post-secondary educational opportunities, their graduation rates remain low (DeAngelo, Franke, Hurtado, Pryor & Tran, 2011; Engle, 2007). At the same time, there appears to be a correlation between positive social and academic assimilation, family support, and college success (Falcon, 2015). One promising intervention aligned with the goal of fostering social integration for FGCS and the focus of this research, is a living-learning community (LLC). LLCs are college living communities in which students have access to faculty and professional staff as well as opportunities to bond with their peers. The purpose of this study was to identify the role LLCs had on one group of FGCS’ transition to their next academic year in relation to feeling socially and academically integrated on their campus and to help professionals in higher education understand how critical it is for first-generation college students to find a sense of belonging on their campus. This study’s qualitative results illuminated how the LLC model provided a bridge between students’ academic and non-academic lives, addressing specific learning focus and enhancing their university experience. It also provided the students with a space for intentional support on how they can better integrate in their college.

Specifically, Astin's (1984) input-environment-output (I-E-O) model was used to investigate the differences between first-generation and non first-generation college students' behaviors of engagement. Recent literature suggests that first-generation college students and non first-generation college students have similar educational experiences when independent variables are controlled (Kuh & Pike, 2005; Tinto, 2002; Hurtado & Carter, 1996). The null hypothesis stated that first-generation college students and non first-generation college students would have similar educational experiences. The inputs for this study consist of the independent variables of sex, student of color status, income level, standardized test scores high school GPA, and generation status. The environment was compromised of the five benchmarks from the National Survey for Student Engagement (NSSE). The outputs consist of the dependent variables of persistence to the next semester or graduation. The college students included in the sample data are from a mid-sized regional, religiously affiliated institution located in the Pacific Northwest. The sample was 1,280 first year and senior students, of which 232 were first-generation students and 1,048 were non first-generation students, who had completed the NSSE instrument in 2005, 2007, and 2009"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: There are many challenges awaiting new college students including time management, keeping up with assignments, navigating school and employment, and maintaining relationships with family and friends. However, first-generation college students have been shown to have more difficulty adapting to college than their peers whose parents are college graduates. This is even more challenging if the students are having difficulty balancing their roles as family members and college students or feel guilty for pursuing an education. The purpose of the present study is to consider whether role conflict is related to academic achievement guilt and how these factors are related to the academic outcomes of college students. This study focuses on (1) the psychometric characteristics of two scales developed for this study, (2) whether greater role conflict and academic guilt predicted lower levels of academic achievement, (3) gender, ethnicity, and college student generation status differences in their experiences of role conflict, academic guilt, and academic achievement outcomes. Participants (N = 398; 88.4% female, mean age: 20.37 years, 45.2% Hispanic, 22.1% White, 55.7% first-generation college student) from a 4-year university completed an online survey assessing role conflict, academic achievement guilt, grade point average, and confidence to continue their educations. Results of confirmatory factor analyses indicated that both the role conflict and academic achievement guilt measures are psychometrically sound. Results demonstrated that greater role conflict was related to GPA and both greater role conflict and greater academic guilt were related to less confidence to continue education. Lastly, Hispanic, and first-generation college students reported more role conflict, academic guilt, and lower GPA compared to White, and continuing-generation college students. Future research and potential interventions are discussed in terms of creating a more supportive environment for college students.

The majority of the research focuses on four year college students, with emphasis on residential college students. Contrary to belief there is minimum research on community college students, in particular, community college commuter students, which is surprising because majority of college students start at a community college. Many of the students are first-generation students at community college. Being the first in their family to become a college student, first generations are entering unfamiliar territory and cultural that is unfamiliar to them. Support services are critical to their persistence semester to semester. This support is critical, because familial supports are minimum or absent, due to families not understanding how to succeed in college. The research designed for this study was phenomenological with a mixed method approach and a stratified random sample of first-generation students in order to provide a detailed discussion of the factors that contribute to the support services that were effective in assisting first-generation students to persist. The study focused on the impact of support services on first-generation students, assisting them with resources to succeed at a community college. Twelve students from two support services programs, Student Employment and TRiO Student Support Services Program participated in individual interviews. The interviews focused on the benefits of support services, coupled with an individual in the student development area, that provided services that lead to the desire higher education with motivating factors from within, familial support and mostly counselors and mentors. The implication identifies the importance of support services at colleges and the individuals to employ in these areas. Although familial support of expectations lead the students to college, the persistence was from support services that motivated them to succeed with encouragement from staff and support services. This study suggest that a key factor to students attending college is an expectation of familial and parental relationships, although there is lack of understanding on the parent’s awareness of support services at school for first-generation students.

Research that underscores cultural wealth is often overlooked in higher education research. Contrary to a deficit oriented approach that focuses mainly on what first-generation students' lack, this study concentrated on the strengths, knowledge, abilities, and skills students possess to succeed in college. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of family, institutions, and people in helping first-generation students use and build cultural capital to meet their personal, career, and academic goals. A convenient sample of 15 first-generation student participants and 1 advisor from a southern California community college was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, transcribed, and analyzed. Transcript analysis produced 5 major themes: (a) Pushing Agents, (b) Accountability Promotes Student Persistence, (c) Career Aspirations, and (d) Pivotal Programs and People in High School. The most salient finding, Pushing Agents detailed the far-reaching affect that family, institutions, and people had on the participants' higher education experience. Pushing agents were a positive factor that frequently, constantly, and intimately pushed participants to carry out their aspirations. In conclusion, participant interviews revealed numerous strengths, assets, and abilities that allowed them to accomplish their personal, career, and academic goals.
