Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the twentieth century, women lagged considerably behind men in their educational attainment. However, in recent decades, young women have become an important source of human capital for labor markets in modern societies, as well as potential competitors to the male workforce. This book asks whether or not women have been able to convert their educational success into gains on the labor market. The expert contributors address the topic on a comparative level with discussions centred on gendered school-to-work transitions and gendered labor market outcomes. Thereafter they analyze the country-specific implications of the gender redress from a wide range of countries including the USA, Russia and Australia. This enlightening book will appeal to graduates and postgraduates studying social policy, education, the labor market, inequality and gender. It will also be of interest to experts in the fields of sociology, education, political science and economics and those interested in educational research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The national and European-level studies of the factors that ensure the success of young people's vocational integration and that offer protection against unemployment were reviewed. The research established that, in most national statistical reports, information on the occupational progress of school-leavers and those emerging from initial training was sparse. It was concluded that, although national statistics and surveys could be used to supplement and explain some of the findings of European surveys, any attempts to use national statistics gathered in the various European countries for purposes of comparison should proceed with caution. Networks currently working in the field of transition at the European level were encouraged to publish their data so as to optimize the use of research work. It was further recommended that the process of conducting comparative studies of the factors ensuring successful transition from the educational system into the labor market begin with prioritization of the large number of themes currently being tackled in national publications. (The report contains 149 references. Appended is a discussion of young people's entry into the labor market that is based on indicators published in selected recent national publications from 16 European countries.) (MN)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journey young people take from education to employment is an important area of research. These first steps out of education will set young people up on the paths they will follow for the rest of their lives. However, recent research has shown that it is becoming harder for young Australians to establish themselves in the labour market. Young people are facing higher levels of part-time work, experiencing lower wage growth, and graduating onto lower levels of the 'job-ladder' than previous generations of young people (Borland & Coelli, 2021; de Fontenay, Lampe, Nugent, & Jomini, 2020). Research by the OECD has also shown that, overall, countries with strong connections between education institutions and employers are those that have been most successful in ensuring young people make successful transitions from school to work (Schoon & Mann, 2020). The findings of this research show that work experience does matter. University graduates in areas of study with a high prevalence of work integrated learning (WIL) have consistently better labour market outcomes. For many cohorts, those young people who have employment in skilled occupations while studying are more likely to attain skilled employment by age twenty-five. [Publisher summary, ed]
