Book excerpt: The Rock Whence We Are Hewn is comprised of various pamphlets and booklets written very early in the history of the Protestant Reformed Churches--between 1919 and 1940. The authors are two men whom God used in forming these churches--Herman Hoeksema and Henry Danhof. All the writings explain and defend the great doctrines of the Reformed faith that were fundamental to the founding of the Protestant Reformed Churches--covenant, predestination, particular grace, and antithesis. These writings therefore were used to establish these churches in the very beginning of their history. The contents of the book are their foundational writings. The title of the book is taken from Isaiah 51:1: "Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged." In this figurative way the prophet called the people of Israel to look to their origins. This title calls the members of the Protestant Reformed Churches, including the ministers and other officebearers, and especially the younger generation, to find in the book the doctrinal truths that are of fundamental importance to the Protestant Reformed Churches still today. By the work of the Spirit these doctrines, confessed, defended, and explained in the writings in this book, are the source of the churches--the rock whence they were hewn.

Yet a close look at John Calvin's life and writings reveals a man who was passionate about the spread of the gospel and the salvation of sinners. From training pastors at his Genevan Academy to sending missionaries to the jungles of Brazil, Calvin consistently sought to encourage and equip Christians to take the good news of salvation to the very ends of the earth. In this carefully researched book, Michael Haykin and Jeffrey Robinson clear away longstanding stereotypes related to the Reformed tradition and Calvin's theological heirs, highlighting the Reformer's neglected missional vision and legacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a Church Dictionary, especially one not as expensive as the more costly works, and at the same time something more complete and satisfactory than a mere glossary of terms. What seems to be needed is an inexpensive, handy volume, "short enough for busy people, plain enough for common people, cheap enough for poor people," yet complete enough to give the information needed. The present work was undertaken with this object in view. It was thought "worthwhile"; for if words are things, then greater familiarity with the phraseology of the Church will lead to greater knowledge "of the things pertaining to the Kingdom of God." What is here set forth is really a HANDY BOOK OF READY REFERENCE arranged in alphabetical order; and while some of the articles may seem to be too brief, yet with the system of cross references adopted, it is believed, will throw considerable light on subjects where it is employed and thus enables the book to be kept within the limits already specified.

Download or read book Upon This Rock: A New Look written by Kenneth J. Morgan and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-12-26 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book is more than a mere academic exercise; it is the foundational work for that long awaited study in one of the most neglected areas of Systematic Theology: viz., Ecclesiology, the doctrine of the Church. Now that work will be a new possibility because of the work of Ken Morgan in this text.” —Dr. Walter C. Kaiser, Jr. This book presents a technical, exegetical study of these topics: “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church.” “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” “Whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.” “Shepherd My sheep.” What is the relationship between Israel and the “church”? What does Paul’s metaphor of the olive tree in Romans 11 represent? Does Paul say in Ephesians 2 that Gentiles become “citizens” of Israel?
