The little ones were all in bed, crouching beneath the clothes, Half trembling at the angry wind, which wildly fell and rose. Old Jem the Sexton rubbed his leg, for he had got the gout; He said he thought it wondrous hard that he must sally out. ...

I want one just awful, dreadful, terrible bad - not a bad dolly, but I want it SO bad that I just can't tell you how bad. Katie: Now then, rosie, ain't you the naughty girl to be wanting a doll when dear dannie is trying to get his eyes well? I don't want anything if he can just be made to see, and you know that takes lots of money. Rosie: Well, I guess I can wish for a dolly - wishing doesn't cost anything, does: it? 'course, I don't mean I want it bought for me; I just mean I want it. That isn't the same, not a bit. Katie: Oh, I See! Well, I don't even want anything, only that dannie can get his eyes fixed. Just think, rosie, if he could come home able to look at us. Wouldn't that be grand, now? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The little bird finds his way to a church, where he also finds food and shelter. When the children's choir practice their Christmas songs, the robin joins in and the Rector notes the lesson: ""Seek God, my children, and when times of storm and trouble come, He'll guide you as He did the bird, and safely lead you home.""

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Christmas Classics" is proud to present you a carefully selected range of fiction and prose for the most beautiful time of the year. Besides best-known classics we also offer a huge variety of out-of-print books and titles long forgotten. You can spot them easily by the red book cover and the golden bells in the middle. This is the story the robins tell as they huddle beneath the holly on the Eve of Christmas. They have told it every Christmas Eve since the world started. They commenced telling it long before Christ was born, for their memory goes further back than men's. The Christmas which they celebrate began just outside of Eden, within sight of its gold-locked doors. It is a merry, tender sort of story. They twitter it in a chuckling fashion to their children. If you prefer to hear it firsthand, creep out to the nearest holly bush on almost any Christmas Eve when snow has made the night all pale and shadowy. If the robins have chosen your holly bush as their rendezvous and you understand their language, you won't need to read what I have written. Like all true stories, it is much better told than read. It's the story of the first laugh that was ever heard in earth or heaven. To be enjoyed properly, it needs the chuckling twitter of the grown-up robins and the squeaky interruptions of the baby birds asking questions. When they get terrifically excited, they jig up and down on the holly branches, and the frozen snow falls with a brittle clatter. Then the mother and father birds say, "Hush!" quite suddenly. No one speaks for a full five seconds. They huddle closer, listening and holding their breath. That's how the story ought to be heard, after nightfall on Christmas Eve, when behind darkened windows little boys and girls have gone to bed early, having hung up their very biggest stockings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Christmas Classics Collection' elegantly bridges the expansive world of Christmas lore, encapsulating an extraordinary range of literary styles—from the poetic to the fantastical, the earnest to the whimsical. This anthology underscores the multifaceted nature of the holiday season through its assembly of stories, poems, and novellas that mirror the diverse cultural and historical influences shaping the Christmas tradition. Standout pieces harmonize the sentimental with the narrative of social conscience, artfully woven by a constellation of luminaries in literature. The selection magnificently traverses the spectrum of human emotion, reflecting on themes of hope, generosity, redemption, and the immutable wonder of Christmas. The contributing authors and editors, ranging from the romantic and Victorian to the pioneers of children's literature, collectively chart the evolution of Christmas storytelling over centuries. Their backgrounds offer a rich tapestry of the global and temporal shifts in the celebration and perception of the holiday. From Dickens' transformative tales that encapsulated the spirit of Victorian Christmas to Andersen's and the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales that have fed the imaginations of generations, the collection draws from the wellspring of literary movements influenced by romanticism, transcendentalism, and the quest for meaning in an industrial age. Furthermore, authors like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky infuse the compilation with profound philosophical and ethical inquiries typical of Russian literature, further broadening the thematic and cultural scope of the anthology. The 'Christmas Classics Collection' invites readers on a literary journey that transcends the typical confines of holiday literature. It presents a unique opportunity to explore the breadth and depth of Christmas as seen through the eyes of some of the most distinguished names in literature. This anthology is not just a celebration of Christmas but a scholarly curation that fosters a deep appreciation for the historical and cultural contexts from which these stories spring. For lovers of literature and enthusiasts of Christmas lore alike, this collection promises an enriching exploration of the human condition through the lens of the festive season.
