Book Synopsis With a Crooked Stick—The Films of Oscar Micheaux by : J. Ronald Green
Download or read book With a Crooked Stick—The Films of Oscar Micheaux written by J. Ronald Green and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-18 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a "crooked stick," filmmaker Oscar Micheaux (1884–1951) sought to hit a "straight lick" by stressing the strategic importance of class mobility, or "uplift," for African Americans. A theme in all of his more than 40 feature-length, black-produced, black-directed, black-cast, and black-audience films, uplift would allow for the better things in life: fast cars and fancy clothes, freedom of belief, financial security, and an unencumbered intellectual life. Although racism was an impediment to uplift for Micheaux and other African Americans, race as a category was of a secondary order for him in the larger game of class. In With a Crooked Stick, J. Ronald Green pursues this seeming contradiction in a detailed analysis of each of Micheaux's 15 surviving films. He presents critical commentary on each film's plot and action and its contribution to the overall theme of uplift. Readers will also find this an invaluable guide to the preoccupations and features of Micheaux's remarkable career and the insight it provides into the African American experience of the 1920s and 30s.

Download or read book The Time out of Mind written by Ian Bell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the 1970s, Bob Dylan’s position as the pre-eminent artist of his generation was assured. The 1975 album Blood on the Tracks seemed to prove, finally, that an uncertain age had found its poet. Then Dylan faltered. His instincts, formerly unerring, deserted him. in the 1980s, what had once appeared unthinkable came to pass: the “voice of a generation” began to sound irrelevant, a tale told to grandchildren.Yet in the autumn of 1997, something remarkable happened. Having failed to release a single new song in seven long years, Dylan put out the equivalent of two albums in a single package. in the concluding volume of his ground- breaking study, ian Bell explores the unparalleled second act in a quintessentially american career. it is a tale of redemption, of an act of creative will against the odds, and of a writer who refused to fade away.Time Out of Mind is the story of the latest, perhaps the last, of the many Bob Dylans.

Book Synopsis The Road Back Home by : Joseph Cavon
Download or read book The Road Back Home written by Joseph Cavon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you desire to know and experience God’s exhilarating journey for creation? The Bible reveals God’s magnificent plans for his dominion and most valued treasure, mankind. However, because of its many complexities, most miss the big picture of Scripture, focusing on obscure doctrinal details, and consequently are confused about their own role and God’s purposes. This book was written as a tool to assist in overcoming these difficulties by presenting the structure of the Bible through analyzing three fundamental plans of God—his original plan for mankind, which was corrupted by sin, his salvation plan that triumphed over sin, and his restoration plan that is steadily returning creation to its genesis. By first accurately examining and gaining a solid grasp of the flow of Scripture through these plans prior to delving into its many doctrinal details, one can far more effectively comprehend its essential message and the intentions of God’s heart toward his people. This book’s intended audience is not merely new believers in Christ, but also those who have been Christians for many years without yet obtaining a firm proficiency of God’s comprehensive message, necessary for healthy growth and fruitfulness. Come, then, and experience the epic revelation of God’s heart.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FLAME OF TRANSFORMATION TURNS TO LIGHT is a book of poems in traditional ghazal form, the first half begun in Turkey, companion volume to "open form" poems written at a later visit, published in 2006 as Love is a Letter Burning in a High Wind (The Ecstatic Exchange). Visiting the epiphany-inducing tombs of Mevlana Rumi and his spiritual companion Shems in Konya, their baraka bathing the journey, the grave of Turkey's great native Sufi poet, Yunus Emre, and traveling through a land of such subtle spirituality, these poems chronicle an imagistic diary through both interior and exterior countrysides, with the second half continued in the same vein at home in Philadelphia.
