The extent of his researches, the accuracy of his knowledge, and the sobriety of his judgment, those who read his pages can hardly fail to observe. These are the qualities which justify the attempt of Mrs. Birkbeck Hill to present in an English dress this sketch of the development of democratic ideas in England and America. At the same time, however, it may be for the convenience of her readers to show the relation of these two essays to the rest of Dr. Bougeaud's works, and to give a brief summary of his conclusions. After obtaining his degree of Doctor in Philosophy at Jena, in 1883, by a thesis on the religious philosophy of Rousseau, Dr. Borgeaud devoted himself to the history of democratic ideas, and democratic government. In 1887, he grained the additional title of Doctor in Law, at Geneva, by his Histoire du Plebiscite daus l'Antiquite. But this investigation of the working of the popular vote in Greece and Rome did not throw much light on the origins of modern democracy. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. RHODE ISLAND. Providence founded by Roger Williams.--First Covenant and Fundamental Articles of 1640.--Colonisation of Aquidneck (Rhode Island).--Democracy.--The Charter of Providence Plantations.--Organization of a Democratic Government.--Valuable help rendered by Roger Williams.--The Second Charter of 1663.--The Cradle of American Democracy. The first to rise up against the growing theocracy of Massachusetts was Roger Williams, a preacher at Salem. He arrived from England in 1631, and 'immediately found himself at war with Congregationalism as it was understood in Boston. After some years of struggle he was banished the colony, for having taught and spread divers strange and novel theories, destructive of the authority of magistrates.1 He took refuge on Indian territory and, with the help of some of the members of his church at Salem, founded, in 1636, the town of Providence on Narragansett Bay. 1 "Whereas Mr. Roger Williams, one of the elders of the Church of Salem, hath broached and dyvulged dyvers newe and dangerous opinions against the authoritie of Magistrates." Mass. Records, i. p. 160. Roger Williams possessed a mind at once enthusiastic and systematic; he was a theologian who had been brought up by a lawyer.1 He pushed Brownism to its logical conclusions, the complete separation of civil and religious matters, and absolute democracy.3 The community which was formed by him, and which afterwards became the kernel of a State, had for its base a double Covenant. The first colonists undertook to obey all laws made by a majority of their body; new-comers, simply dwelling amongst them and not yet received as citizens, promised obedience to these same statutes which, it is said, must concern matters exclusively civil.1 1...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Democracy Any inquiry into the course of democratic progress in England would be confessedly imsy and superficial which did not endeavour, however brie y, to indicate the nature of the movement in its earlier stages. Is English democracy of home growth, or does it owe its chief impulse to the cognate movement in France? Was it propelled onwards by a conscious striving after new ideals, or was it merely the result of discontent aroused by material discomforts and unjust laws? Did our Radical reformers claim that they were initiating a new era for humanity at large, or were they content with redressing the ills of the time? To these and similar questions it is hoped that this little work will furnish some reply, not, as a rule, explicitly and in set terms, but rather by means of an unbiassed narrative which will leave the reader free to draw his own conclusions as to the drift of events, the full significance of which cannot as yet be fully realized. In opposition to recent theories the author sees lit tle continuous Germanic survival in the government and institutions of the colonists, since despotism had largely crushed these out in public life. He returns with accumu lated evidence to the older explanation that self-govem ment in church matters gave birth to political democracy in New England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy in the Old World and the New The present writer has long felt that writings and speeches and talk generally having to do with Socialism were apt to be very inaccurate, and, in proportion to the degree in which they were so, confused, and, so far as they were not as a consequence inconclusive, to be misleading. He has enjoyed opportunities, from communica tion with well-informed and eminent individuals, of being led to appreciate some salient points, on which a right comprehension of the topics alluded to mainly hinges. Daniel Ziblatt revisits this timely and classic question in a wide-ranging historical narrative that traces the evolution of modern political democracy in Europe from its modest beginnings in 1830s Britain to Adolf Hitler's 1933 seizure of power in Weimar Germany. Based on rich historical and quantitative evidence, the book offers a major reinterpretation of European history and the question of how stable political democracy is achieved. The barriers to inclusive political rule, Ziblatt finds, were not inevitably overcome by unstoppable tides of socioeconomic change, a simple triumph of a growing middle class, or even by working class collective action. Instead, political democracy's fate surprisingly hinged on how conservative political parties - the historical defenders of power, wealth, and privilege - recast themselves and coped with the rise of their own radical right. With striking modern parallels, the book has vital implications for today's new and old democracies under siege.

Among the problems of the hour we find one which compasses the world. Reforms which today have no defined scientific basis upon which to rest their appeal to the people must naturally die a natural death. The problem, Votes for Women, faces all na tions. Today each nation is evolving out of its own intelligence the battle ground upon which this appeal of life, through womanhood, is to be met. The fundamental principle of Democracy found its first great victory upon these shores. Here a prin ciple became a Republic. Here life clothed the Law of Revolution with flesh and gave the divine body bone and structure, with the blood of a mighty race for its blood. The Republic was born, under the law, a child, to be born again as a man child, recognizing a first and a second birth in its mortal construction, - a birth which ordains fol lowed by a birth which establishes in immortality that which was ordained in the original conception. All of the quotations in this work are. Unless otherwise indicated, from the Bible and Walt Whitman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The chapter on State Insurance is new, while the whole has been brought up to date so far as possible. The title of the book would seem to limit the treatment to England, or at any rate the United Kingdom; but it was felt that it would be as well to make some mention in a few cases extended reference - to similar questions in the British colonies. The book is designed for those who wish to get in a short, compact form a general idea of the latest deve.lopments in social legislation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available here for the first time in English, Rómulo Betancourt has been a Spanish-language classic in Venezuela since its publication in 2013. This book is an extended essay on a transformational figure in the country’s history from an internationally-renowned public intellectual, Germán Carrera Damas. In this work, Carrera Damas captures a significant transition for the nation that began in the 1940s when Rómulo Betancourt and his colleagues overthrew the ruling military dictatorship and established a modern democratic regime. However, the system Betancourt created eventually deteriorated after his presidency. Carrera Damas not only delves into the evolving political thought of a leader who remained dedicated to his cause throughout a varied career, but also offers insights on what it takes to create and sustain a democratic republic under difficult circumstances. As the country’s current economic and political crisis intensifies, this book will help English speakers understand the cultural context of Venezuela’s contemporary moment as well as set a historical precedent for the next stages in the development of its position in the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy in England Criticism is, however, concerned with details. N 0 one challenges the basic assumptions or indeed knows what they are. Democratic theory was formulated for Englishmen by the utilitarian philosophers of the late eighteenth century. We are told that the utilitarian doctrine with its false psychology is dead.1 Dead in this sense of course means dead in the common-rooms of universities; if the Gallup Poll asked a selected sample of citizens if they agreed that human beings were dominated by a search for happiness and that the aim of government should be the greatest good of the greatest number, ninety-nine out of a hundred would enthusiastically agree. But if these doctrines are wrong, and if each man is not the best judge of his own interests, then there is no basis for believing that majority rule will produce decisions which are either just or adequate, except some form of the theory of the general will. These theories are, however, also generally rejected, having been found more useful to autocratic than to democratic governments. This new Right, this democratic Right, having entered into the world by revolution, having been proclaimed, established, and defended by revolution, advancing from triumph to triumph by revolution, is it at all surprising that the principle of democracy and the principle of revolution should have been confounded?
