Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing Composition of Bank Assets The Graduate School Of Business Administration of New York University has conducted a program Of research in major trends and problems Of commercial banking over the past five years. Studies of the adequacy of bank earnings, the competi tive position of commercial banks and the causes and effects of changing interest rates have been published under this program. In no respect have the dynamic economic developments of recent years affected commercial banking so profoundly as in the changes that have taken place-in the composition of bank assets. Serving as they do every sector of the economy, the commercial banks of necessity mirror in their assets the shifts that occur in the demands for credit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking The treatment of Money in Part I follows in a general way the lines made familiar by other standard works to which frequent references are made in the footnotes and m the suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. The efiort has been made to compress this part of the book into the smallest space consistent with a presentation of essentials in the history, theory and principles of money, leaving the major part of the book for the discussion of the principles and practices of banking. In the chapters devoted to banking organization and practice it has been impossible to give consideration to the varying local cus toms and practices of different types of banking institutions. The aim has been to describe those principles and practices of commercial banking that are common to all banks. Though the new Federal reserve system introduces far reaching changes in our banking and currency system, many years must elapse before its full effects can be definitely measured. Throughout Part II frequent reference is made to various provisions of the Act of 1913, and Chapter XXII is devoted to an analysis of its leading provisions, and a summary of the steps taken in the establishment of the new system. A proper understanding of the new system, how ever, can be gained only by following its Operations and marking the effect of changes that will certainly be made in the law from time to time. It is believed that the addition of the complete text of the Federal Reserve Act (appendix) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Banking System of the United States and Its Relation to the Money and Business of the Country The exact relations of our banking system to the business prosperity and money of the United States do not seem to be fully com prehended by our people. The writer is a business man, to whom his dealings with banks, in the ordinary course of business, has suggested the preparation of this little volume, in which he discusses that serv ice of banks to the community which to him seems at once the most important, and, at the same time, most commonly ignored. In his judgment there can be no proper understand ing of the monetary problems of the day unless the relation of the bank-credit money of the country to the money of the Govern ment is 'fully comprehended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Banking in Florida, 1828-1954 For three centuries following the discovery of Florida in 1513 there was no institution or organization of a character that would be presently recognized as a commercial bank. The first bank, the Bank of Florida at Tallahassee, was chartered in 1828. There were, however, organizations and institutions which carried on public and private business during the three hundred years of Spanish and English occupations of Florida. The financial his tory of the state in' these periods can be related through the story of the commercial operations of public and private agencies before American acquisition in 1821. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Bodenhorn's State Banking in Early America studies the financial experimentation that took place in the United States between 1790 and 1860. Dr. Bodenhorn's book explores regional differences in banking structures, which bear indirectly in the conection between financial and economic development. If a single theme emerges, it is that the United States benefitted from its free banking philosophy in which state governments, rather than a centralized authority, created financial structures designed to serve specific, local needs. Thus decentralized federalism provided state legislatures with a great deal of flexibility in their individual approaches to economic and financial issues. The important lessons to be learned from Dr. Bodenhorn's historical account are that successful banking systems are flexible, predictable, and incentive-compatible; they meet the needs of the borrowers, depositors and shareholders, and they reduce downside risks to generally agreed upon levels. These lessons imply that we cannot, a priori, define an optimal, one-size-fits-all banking system. We need to know something about the formal and informal institutions underlying an economy and about the risk preferences of its citizenry. Historically, outsiders view Americans as experimenters and risk takers. Nowhere is this experimentation and risk taking more apparent than in early American banking policies.
