Book Synopsis The Webley Service Revolver by : Robert Maze
Download or read book The Webley Service Revolver written by Robert Maze and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Webley .455in service revolver is among the most powerful top-break revolvers ever produced. First adopted in 1887, in various marques it was the standard-issue service pistol for British and Commonwealth armed forces for nearly fifty years; later versions in .38in calibre went on to see further service in World War II and beyond, as well as in a host of law-enforcement roles around the world into the 1970s. Developed to give British service personnel the ability to incapacitate their opponents in 'small wars' around the globe, the Webley used the formidable – and controversial – .455in cartridge, a variant of which was known as the 'manstopper'. Users found it offered good penetration and excellent stopping power with only mild recoil – indeed, it was rated superior to the US .45 Colt in stopping power. Featuring specially commissioned full-colour artwork and close-up photographs, this is the compelling story of the Webley revolver, the powerful pistol that saw service across the British Empire and throughout two world wars.

Book excerpt: This book succinctly explains revolving firearms (even to include rifles and proto-machineguns such as the Gatling) made on the basis of concepts covered by British patents issued during the timeframe 1865 to 1888, said bracket starting with the expiry of the Robert Adams patent and the dawn of the breechloading cartridge arm, and ending with the beginning of the era of the Webley .455 Mark I hinge-frame service revolver and FWIW, smokeless powder ammunition. As has been noted by the prior reviewer, most American readers will not be familiar with many of these revolvers.

Download or read book The Hand Gun Story written by John Walter and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A firearms expert “traces the history of the ‘one hand gun’ from its 14th century origins . . . surveying changing technology, techniques, and design” (Midwest Book Review). Ideally suited for both attack and self-defense, handguns have gotten smaller and deadlier. But the earliest pistols had a tendency to misfire. This was cured by the cap-lock, which proved a massive success in the American Civil War, with hundreds of thousands of cap-lock revolvers used on each side. Self-contained metal-case cartridges were to bring a fundamental change to handgun design: not only by allowing the introduction of revolvers that ejected automatically or were easily reloaded, but also by paving the way for the automatic pistol. World War I provided the handgun with a proving ground. At the end of the hostilities, with so much surplus weaponry, work on the handgun could have ceased; instead, a new developmental phase was begun by the nations that had emerged from the crumbling Imperial empires. During World War II, the efficiency of well-established designs was confirmed and new designs, such as the Walther P. 38, showed their potential. The emergence of the submachine-gun in 1945 reduced the status of the handgun—but only temporarily. The need for efficient self-defense shows no signs of lessening; and the rise in shooting for sport, particularly with the revolver, has sharpened the quest for efficiency. The never ending search for advanced production techniques shows that the handgun has as much a future in the twenty-first century as it had in the heyday of the Wild West, or in the trenches of Passchendaele.

Book Synopsis Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter by : Joseph G. Rosa
Download or read book Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter written by Joseph G. Rosa and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-07-17 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “James Butler Hickok, generally called ‘Wild Bill,’ epitomized the archetypal gunfighter, that half-man, half-myth that became the heir to the mystique of the duelist when that method of resolving differences waned. . . . Easy access to a gun and whiskey coupled with gambling was the cause of most gunfights--few of which bore any resemblance to the gentlemanly duel of earlier times. . . . Hickok’s gunfights were unusual in that most of them were ‘fair’ fights, not just killings resulting from rage, jealousy over a woman, or drunkenness. And, the majority of his encounters were in his role as lawman or as an individual upholding the law.”--from Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok (1837–1876) was a Civil War spy and scout, Indian fighter, gambler, and peace officer. He was also one of the greatest gunfighters in the West. His peers referred to his reflexes as “phenomenal” and to his skill with a pistol as “miraculous.” In Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter, Joseph G. Rosa, the world’s foremost authority on Hickok, provides an informative examination of Hickok’s many gunfights. Rosa describes the types of guns used by Hickok and illustrates his use of the plains’ style of “quick draw,” as well as examining other elements of the Hickok legend. He even reconsiders the infamous “dead man’s hand” allegedly held by Hickok when he was shot to death at age thirty-nine while playing poker. Numerous photographs and drawings accompany Rosa’s down-to-earth text.

Book Synopsis History of Remington Firearms by : Roy Marcot
Download or read book History of Remington Firearms written by Roy Marcot and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name Remington is synonymous with the history of the United States, from the Civil War, the two world wars, and every skirmish in between . . . to outlaws beyond the pale, and the law enforcement officers hired to catch them. The name is equally synonymous with hunting, from casual afternoons plinking by a pond, to deer hunting in Pennsylvania, to hunting elk and antelope in the West. The History of Remington Firearms follows the rise of the company, from Eliphalet Remington’s first handmade gun in 1816, to the dominance of the Remington factories during the early industrial era, with lavish custom-made pieces for heroes and statesmen, with the triumph of the common man’s gun, and with the little .22, which became a part of so many childhoods. It is also a history of innovation, of the rush to create, with the development of the first hammerless repeater, the first slide-action rifle, advances in boring, and revolutions in ammunition. And the modern classics, like the 870 pump-action “Wingmaster” shotgun, and the Model 700 bolt-action rifle. Complete with more than 150 full-color photographs, including designer drawings and pictures of the gun in use throughout history, The History of Remington Firearm is a collector’s edition for gun enthusiasts and historians alike.

Download or read book Written in Blood written by Colin Wilson and published by Diversion Publishing Corp.. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 997 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extraordinary accounts of forensic crime detection—from poisoners in ancient Rome to modern day serial killers—by the bestselling author of The Outsider. In 44 BC, a Roman doctor named Antistius performed the first autopsy recorded in history—on the corpse of murder victim Julius Caesar. However, not until the nineteenth century did the systematic application of scientific knowledge to crime detection seriously begin, so that the tiniest scrap of evidence might yield astonishing results—like the single horsehair that betrayed the murderer in New York’s 1936 puzzling and sensational Nancy Titterton case. Many such dramatic tales appear in this updated edition of the most gripping catalog of crimes by acclaimed criminologist Colin Wilson. The book follows the progress of forensic science from the first cases of suspected arsenic poisoning right up to investigations using an impressive armory of high-tech methods: ballistic analysis, blood typing, voice printing, textile analysis, psychological profiling and genetic fingerprinting. “Colin Wilson has made himself the Philosopher-King of forensic speculation, the Diderot of the path labs.” —The Times Literary Supplement “Will enthrall connoisseurs of violent crime.” —The Glasgow Herald
