Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discussion of the Facts and Philosophy of Ancient and Modern Spiritualism About the first of June, 1852, I received a friendly note from Dr. B. W. Richmond, of Jefferson, Ohio, requesting me to embody the facts and reasons in support of the alleged Spiritual origin of the Manifestations, which he proposed to accompany with a critical review and numerous facts and observations of his own, and expressing a desire that the whole might be published in a volume of several hundred pages. Dr. Richmond's letters in the Tribune had previously attracted very general attention, and he was regarded, at that time, as the most formidable opponent to the Spiritual theory in this country. Indeed, the editor of the Tribune had expressed the opinion that he was the ablest man which the Spiritual phenomena had called into the field; and it was manifest to all, that he had at least the candor to acknowledge the facts, if he had not the ability to explain them, on his favorite hypothesis. All other opposing theories seemed childish or absurd, while the one suggested by my correspondent certainly demanded the most serious consideration. I had no wish to shun the proposed ordeal; but having to perform, in addition to numerous other duties, the entire editorial labor of a weekly paper and a monthly magazine, I was quite too much occupied to accept the proposition of Dr. Richmond, which, for these reasons, was respectfully declined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Tendency of Modern Spiritualism While the library of Spiritualist publications, already large, is fast increasing, it is by no means surprising that books should be written against Spiritualism. Several have been presented to the public; some professing to expose it as a humbug - an illusion; others endeavoring to explain it on natural principles, as originating in magnetism, od force, Ac. These works, in the main, give evidence of learning, and a knowledge of science and philosophy. Had we any idea that this is the proper method of meeting the issue, we should not think it necessary to add to the list. But we have thought from the beginning of the work of Spiritualism, that it was Satanic in its nature and origin, and immoral in its tendency; and that the word of God presented the only antidote to its seductions. This work lays no claim to literary merit, or to philosophic or scientific research. Our course has not been in that direction. Our aim has not been to gratify a taste for such reading, but rather to make our pages useful. Nor have we aimed to please any particular class, but rather to fulfill the requirement to speak the truth in faithfulness, whether men will hear or whether they will forbear. We have written especially for the benefit of those who fear God, and tremble at his word. While we believe that in these pages is contained the only true solution of these mysterious phenomena, we would remind the readers that an intellectual conviction, or mere belief of the truth, will not shield them from the power of these deceptions. Nothing short of humble obedience to the truth, walking in the Spirit of God, will shield from the spirit of error. "If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." Though he may be convinced of the truth, yet if the spirit of error reigns in his heart, the coming conflict will surely find him arrayed "against the Lamb and his army." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Spiritualism: Or, the Opening Way Should some of the inquiry seem like probing into the ways of God, or too much like that feeling after the print of the nails, which alone could persuade the doubting disciple, the writer can only say that it is in accord with the need of his own mind, as well as with the development of the day, that man should in all things find a reason for his faith, if he can; the limit of such inquiry, though not always of his attainment, being only in his capacity to shape his questioning. Not in conceit or presumption let the asking mind raise its thought to the highest, but in that sure trust which should ever bring the sincere child to the good Father, with uplifted head and out stretched arms, for the blessings of His great love, the inspiration of His ever waiting spirit of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missing Link in Modern Spiritualism IT is not that the history of Spiritual Manifestations in this century and country has not again and again been written, nor that a library of the Splendid literature of Spiritualism - narrative, philosophical, and religious - does not already exist, that I have deemed it a duty to give this history to the world. It happens that nobody else possesses - both in vivid per sonal recollections and in stores of documentary material the means and the data necessary for the task of giving a correct account of the initiation of the movement known as Modern Spiritualism; and the now hastening lapse of years gives warning that if to place it on record is a duty - as many friends have often urged - it is a duty not to be much longer delayed. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Report of the Commission Appointed by the University of Pennsylvania to Investigate Modern Spiritualism Now, at the present time, when the attention of the public is turning towards questions of Psychology and Psychiatry, it is most appropriate that a volume such as the present Report be again placed in the hands of the public. While it cannot be said that the conclusions reached by the Seybert Commission were final, yet material for future investigation was furnished and facts so clearly stated that the reader might form his own conclusions. The purpose and intended scope of the Commission are plainly set forth in the Preliminary sections, and therefore need not be entered upon here. Of the members composing that Commission but one is now surviving, Dr. Calvin B. Knerr, who contributed an interesting report on the slate-writing medium, Mrs. Patterson. The sections by the Acting-Chairman, Dr. Horace Howard Furness, on Mediumistic Development, Sealed Letters, and Materialization were the occasion of acrimonious and violent attack on the whole work of the Commission by those periodicals devoted to spiritualism and its propaganda. Age cannot wither the charm of the good humoured satire with which the Acting-Chairman treated these subjects; and it was largely the spirit in which they were thus approached that inspired the intense hostility on the part of the spiritual mediums and their many followers. It has been epigrammatically said that, Superstition is, in many cases, the cloak that keeps a man's religion from dying of cold; possibly the same may be said of Spiritualism and Psychology.
