Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of John On the other hand, if he be possessed of that special information which should qualify the inter preter for his office, another snare is waiting to trap him as we shall see. Study of Eastern religions and philosophies has revealed to many investigators that the pure, and noble, and uplifting, is not the sole property of Christianity. This discovery has some times resulted in a belittling of Jesus the Christ, whereas he is the chief cornerstone of that Temple of Truth into which many great and dedicated lives have been builded. This being so, let the qualified interpreter refrain from substituting for the name of Jesus Christ that of another, however exalted. If to such an interpreter the book of Revelation seem only a series of chapters taken from the initiatory rites of the Ancient Mysteries, it must be admitted that, for reasons to be explained presently, his ingenuity and special knowledge can make the book conform in a way to his theory, but it should be said that his meanings, however plausible, will be only secondary and, at a time like the present, his giving will be but a stone to those who cry for bread. Reve lation deals with world-happenings, in fact with the renovation of the human race and the earth itself, and not with that merely personal development for which the Mysteries existed, and which is only a type, the little likeness of the large. Book excerpt: Here the reader meets many of the picturesque images that are identified with Revelation--the four horses and their riders, the antichrist, the woman clothed with the sun, the beast with his number, Armageddon. William Barclay helps the reader understand and interpret these and many other images drawn from Revelation that have so seized hold of the world's imagination. For almost fifty years and for millions of readers, the Daily Study Bible commentaries have been the ideal help for both devotional and serious Bible study. Now, with the release of the New Daily Study Bible, a new generation will appreciate the wisdom of William Barclay. With clarification of less familiar illustrations and inclusion of more contemporary language, the New Daily Study Bible will continue to help individuals and groups discover what the message of the New Testament really means for their lives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Revelation of St. John, Vol. 1 of 2 In the years 178q and 1786, I delivered a courfe of leélures on the whole of this book. Thefe were not committed to writing. L'af terwards examined all the writers on the Re velation, who had come to my knowledge many of whom were men of great abilities, learning, worth, and reputation. But I ne ver met with one who explained that book upon fixed and ef'tabliflied principles, or who unfolded its true and connected meaning. For want of fuch principles of interpreta tion, their writings were rather conjectures than explanations. Many of them, indeed, were, like the perfons who made them, very fagacious; and hence in many parts they hit upon the truth. If [had found a jufi and complete explanation of that book, on fixed and rational principles, in the writings of a Vitringa, a Sir Ifaac Newton, a Lord Napier, a Lowman, or any other commentaw tor, l {hould never have troubled the public with my opinion on this important fubjeét. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Key of the Revelation of Jesus Christ as Given to John, the Seer of Patmos, Vol. 2: Being an Analytical Exposition of the Visions of Its Last Eleven Chapters II. Daniel wrote some years later than Habakkuk, and gave detail, periods and data which have furnished the Church and the prophetic world with the antitypical tables, and made plain many parts of the vision. III. The Revelation followed the same general lines, added new detail, repeated the periods and gave further data, perfecting and making more legible the tables, so that in our day they are very plain to every interested, patient reader. Thus the history Of the Messiah - so far as it is mea sured by the cycles of time, - and Of the Antichrist, that for more than twelve and a half centuries opposed His work, and scattered and desolated both the Church and the nations, have been hung up in public by the Prophets, and in the temple by the Church, for the inspection of every passer by. The last century, specially, has added the spectacle of many running with the glorious messages of the work and new victories of Christ, and the increasing desolation and hastening destruction of the Antichrist, and all that those things mean to the Church and to the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of Jesus Christ by John, Vol. 1 of 2 The Frontispiece ia intended to aerve the following pnrpoaeB. 1.To exhibit the structure of the Revelation at a glance. Inside the outer pointed hand are the two aymbolization Bof the Church of Christ;, as described ia Cs. i-iii, and Ce. xxi-xxii. At the top is the High Priest, holding in his hand the seven stars, and walking in the midst of the seven caodlesticks. At the bottom is the new Jerusalem, coming down ont of heaven towards the great and high mountain. As these two are symbols of the one Church at different epochs, they are connected together. Inside the inner band is the scene of judgment in heaven, as described ia Cs. iv-v, and resumed inC. xx;11-15. As these two passages relate to what is for substance one scene, ihb symbols above and below the roll are connected together by the myriads of myriads of angels (v;11). In the lower part of the Conrt of judgment, two departures from the symbolical description may be observed. The great white throne (xx;11) ia left out, and sheep and goats are introduced. The former has been omitted, partly because the space at command did not admit of its introduction, and partly because the throne in the upper part is substantially identical with it. The latter have been inserted from Matt, zxv; 33, as forming the best mode of symbolically representing the dead, the righteous and the unrighteous. In like manner, the cubical shape of the new Jerusalem has been sacrificed to pictorial effect; and in some respects one or two of the other symbols have been adapted to piotolial representation, and the space at command. In the middle of the scene of judgment, the opened roll with seven seals symholizes the evidence, which is brought before the Court In the four outer comers of the Frontispiece are symbolical representations of the heathen, which are without the Church in the four comers of the earth (xx;8). The four severally represent (T).B ahhaiiish, (Ii). Bdddhibm, (Iii). Varioos roRUS or Heathenism, and (Iv). Isuush. Viewing the three scenes, then, in the opposite direction to that, in which they have now been noticed, that within the inner band represeuts the Old Dispensation or Judaism, that within the outer band the New Dispensation or Christianity, and that on the outside Heathenism.2. The Frontispiece serves, also, to show the form and arrangerneTit of the seven-teal roll. Bands, wider or narrower as the occasion required, and beginning with the seventh, are. supposed to have been passed round two successive folds of the roll as it was rolled up, and the ends of each band to have been fastened together by a seal at the side. Then, as each successive seal was broken, the portion appertaining to that seal would become visible in the proper order. Each seal-band would cover, and thus distinguish the epoch or cardinal crisis of a seal; and those lying between two seal-periods would cover, and thus denote a shorter or longer transition period, 144102 , . Ii. 8, The church in Pergamum represents those who are strong in faith, who would even suffer death for their faith, but whose faith is one-sided. They are not willing to submit to that bloodless martyrdom in the crucifixion of the flesh and its un cleanness to which all the followers of the Lord are called (see ch. Ii. 12, Thyatira represents that order of the church' universal on earth, made up of those who are exemplary in good works, in charity, in faith, in patience, but who are wanting in caution, apt to be led away into delusion, and the pretences of false teachers (see ch. For want of waking and watchfulness they are losing the life they once had (see ch. Iii. 3, Philadelphia represents those blessed souls who are specially beloved. They have an open door of communion with the Lord which no man can shut. Iii. 7 - 10, Laodicea represents the lukewarm people who say they are rich and increased with goods and have need of nothing, not recognizing how wretched and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked they are. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of St. John In answering the call for a third edition of these Lectures the author has thought it desirable to make a change in the mode of their publication. In former editions the Lectures were followed by several Appendices, treating of such important subjects as the Authorship of the Apocalypse, its Relation to the Fourth Gospel, its Date, and its Unity. These topics appeal to a narrower circle of readers than the Lectures themselves; while, at the same time, the growing rather than diminishing interest in the subjects discussed, together with the progress of inquiry, render it necessary that they should be treated anew, and the treatment brought down to the present hour. The author therefore now separates the Appendices from the Lectures; and, after having reconsidered them in the light of the most recent literature on the subject, he hopes to publish them in a volume of Discussions similar, at least in part, to that which was spoken of in the Preface to the first edition of this work. This volume will be prepared with as little delay as possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
