Inside the outer pointed hand are the two aymbolization Bof the Church of Christ;, as described ia Cs. i-iii, and Ce. xxi-xxii. At the top is the High Priest, holding in his hand the seven stars, and walking in the midst of the seven caodlesticks. At the bottom is the new Jerusalem, coming down ont of heaven towards the great and high mountain. As these two are symbols of the one Church at different epochs, they are connected together. Inside the inner band is the scene of judgment in heaven, as described ia Cs. iv-v, and resumed inC. xx;11-15. As these two passages relate to what is for substance one scene, ihb symbols above and below the roll are connected together by the myriads of myriads of angels (v;11). In the lower part of the Conrt of judgment, two departures from the symbolical description may be observed. The great white throne (xx;11) ia left out, and sheep and goats are introduced. The former has been omitted, partly because the space at command did not admit of its introduction, and partly because the throne in the upper part is substantially identical with it. The latter have been inserted from Matt, zxv; 33, as forming the best mode of symbolically representing the dead, the righteous and the unrighteous. In like manner, the cubical shape of the new Jerusalem has been sacrificed to pictorial effect; and in some respects one or two of the other symbols have been adapted to piotolial representation, and the space at command. In the middle of the scene of judgment, the opened roll with seven seals symholizes the evidence, which is brought before the Court In the four outer comers of the Frontispiece are symbolical representations of the heathen, which are without the Church in the four comers of the earth (xx;8). The four severally represent (T).B ahhaiiish, (Ii). Bdddhibm, (Iii). Varioos roRUS or Heathenism, and (Iv). Isuush. Viewing the three scenes, then, in the opposite direction to that, in which they have now been noticed, that within the inner band represeuts the Old Dispensation or Judaism, that within the outer band the New Dispensation or Christianity, and that on the outside Heathenism.2. The Frontispiece serves, also, to show the form and arrangerneTit of the seven-teal roll. Bands, wider or narrower as the occasion required, and beginning with the seventh, are. supposed to have been passed round two successive folds of the roll as it was rolled up, and the ends of each band to have been fastened together by a seal at the side. Then, as each successive seal was broken, the portion appertaining to that seal would become visible in the proper order. Each seal-band would cover, and thus distinguish the epoch or cardinal crisis of a seal; and those lying between two seal-periods would cover, and thus denote a shorter or longer transition period, 144102 , . Study of Eastern religions and philosophies has revealed to many investigators that the pure, and noble, and uplifting, is not the sole property of Christianity. This discovery has some times resulted in a belittling of Jesus the Christ, whereas he is the chief cornerstone of that Temple of Truth into which many great and dedicated lives have been builded. This being so, let the qualified interpreter refrain from substituting for the name of Jesus Christ that of another, however exalted. If to such an interpreter the book of Revelation seem only a series of chapters taken from the initiatory rites of the Ancient Mysteries, it must be admitted that, for reasons to be explained presently, his ingenuity and special knowledge can make the book conform in a way to his theory, but it should be said that his meanings, however plausible, will be only secondary and, at a time like the present, his giving will be but a stone to those who cry for bread. Reve lation deals with world-happenings, in fact with the renovation of the human race and the earth itself, and not with that merely personal development for which the Mysteries existed, and which is only a type, the little likeness of the large. That it was necessary here to lay open a new path; that neither the course pursued in the older ecclesiastical, nor that of the modern Rationalistic exposition was to be followed, I never entertained a doubt. The constantly renewed attempts at fresh investigations resulted only in a better understanding of particular points, but accomplished nothing as to the main theme. I was not the less persuaded, however, that the blame of this obscurity lay not in the book itself, with the divine character of which I was deeply impressed, but in its exposition; and I did not cease to long for the time when an insight might be granted me into its wonderful depths. Several years ago, I was visited with what was, in other respects, a heavy season of affliction, which obliged me to discontinue for some months my official duties. I looked about for a rod and staff that might comfort me, and soon lighted on the Revelation. Day and night I pondered on it, and one difficulty vanished after another. At the period of my recovery, there was scarcely a point of any moment respecting which I did not think I had obtained light. I had still, however, after becoming well, to finish my Commentary on the Psalms. Then I went to my task with the greatest eagerness. The sad times of March 1848 did not interrupt, but rather expedited my labours. It was my purpose to have issued the two volumes of the work simultaneously. But I have now resolved to bring out the first volume alone - because the Revelation has a very close relation to the wants of the present time, and I reckoned it my duty to endeavour, according to the best of my ability, that the rich treasury of counsel and comfort, which the Lord has provided for us in this book, should as soon as possible be made accessible to those who desire to possess it. For in the whole range of literature there is no composition which is a more perfect work of art, or which more rigidly excludes whatever does not subserve its main end. From the first word to the last there is no paragraph, sentence, or expression which is out of its place, or with which we could dispense. Part hangs together with part in perfect balance. The sequence may at times be obscure, but sequence there always is. The relevancy of this or that remark may not at first sight be apparent, but irrelevancy is impossible to this writer. The object which the Evangelist had in view in writing this Gospel we are not left to find out for ourselves. He explicitly says that his purpose in writing was to promote the belief that "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God" (chap. xx. 31). This purpose, he judges, he will best accomplish, not by writing an essay, nor by framing an abstract argument in advocacy of the claims of Jesus, but by reproducing in his Gospel those manifestations of His glory which elicited faith in the first disciples and in others.
