Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation an Analysis and Exposition of the Last Book of the Bible "The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto Him -." This is the first sentence with which this last book in God's Word begins. The best title therefore is, "The Revelation of Jesus Christ." Our Lord received, according to this opening statement, a revelation from God. This must be understood in connection with Himself as the Son of Man. As the Only Begotten He had no neecf of a revelation; in His Deity He is acquainted with all the eternal purposes. One with God He knows the end from the beginning. But He, who is very God, took on in incarnation the form of a servant, and thus being in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself (Phil. ii:7-8). And as the Man who had passed through death, whom God raised from the dead and exalted at His own right hand, God gave Him this revelation concerning the judgment of the earth and the glory of Himself. "God raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory" (1 Peter i:21). What this Glory is which He received from God is fully and blessedly revealed in this book. It is the revelation of His acquired Glory and how this Glory is to be manifested in connection with the earth. And this revelation He makes known to His servants, because His own are sharers with Him in all He received from God. Book excerpt: Acclaimed educator and minister Arno C. Gaebelein's commentary on the Book of Revelation is detailed and engaging, discussing the prophetic and symbolic elements of the text. Narrating from his dispensationalist perspective, Gaebelein discusses sequentially the chapters of Revelation. He investigates the link between Revelation and the Old Testament, in particular the Seventy-Week prophecies of Daniel. The book's repeated allusion to the number seven characterize the later chapters, with visitations of seven angels with seven corresponding judgments upon mankind investigated. Using his ample experience with the Bible, Gaebelein reveals a series of details and connections, with scripture references included throughout his investigation. While some Bible commentaries are difficult to read and steeped in scholarly language, Arno C. Gaebelein had the everyday Christian in mind when writing this book. As a Methodist minister with plentiful experience talking and explaining religious doctrines and ideas to believers, the author was familiar and experienced with delivering knowledge. Just as Gaebelein strives to demonstrate the harmony between the various Bible prophecies, so too does he aim for constant clarity in explanation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental commentary on the book of Revelation, originally published in 1999, has been highly acclaimed by scholars, pastors, students, and others seriously interested in interpreting the Apocalypse for the benefit of the church. Too often Revelation is viewed as a book only about the future. As G. K. Beale shows, however, Revelation is not merely a futurology but a book about how the church should live for the glory of God throughout the ages -- including our own. Engaging important questions concerning the interpretation of Revelation in scholarship today, as well as interacting with the various viewpoints scholars hold on these issues, Beale's work makes a major contribution in the much-debated area of how the Old Testament is used in the Apocalypse. Approaching Revelation in terms of its own historical background and literary character, Beale argues convincingly that John's use of Old Testament allusions -- and the way the Jewish exegetical tradition interpreted these same allusions -- provides the key for unlocking the meaning of Revelation's many obscure metaphors. In the course of Beale's careful verse-by-verse exegesis, which also untangles the logical flow of John's thought as it develops from chapter to chapter, it becomes clear that Revelation's challenging pictures are best understood not by apparent technological and contemporary parallels in the twentieth century but by Old Testament and Jewish parallels from the distant past.

Book excerpt: A startling exploration of the history of the most controversial book of the Bible, by the bestselling author of Beyond Belief. Through the bestselling books of Elaine Pagels, thousands of readers have come to know and treasure the suppressed biblical texts known as the Gnostic Gospels. As one of the world's foremost religion scholars, she has been a pioneer in interpreting these books and illuminating their place in the early history of Christianity. Her new book, however, tackles a text that is firmly, dramatically within the New Testament canon: The Book of Revelation, the surreal apocalyptic vision of the end of the world . . . or is it? In this startling and timely book, Pagels returns The Book of Revelation to its historical origin, written as its author John of Patmos took aim at the Roman Empire after what is now known as "the Jewish War," in 66 CE. Militant Jews in Jerusalem, fired with religious fervor, waged an all-out war against Rome's occupation of Judea and their defeat resulted in the desecration of Jerusalem and its Great Temple. Pagels persuasively interprets Revelation as a scathing attack on the decadence of Rome. Soon after, however, a new sect known as "Christians" seized on John's text as a weapon against heresy and infidels of all kinds-Jews, even Christians who dissented from their increasingly rigid doctrines and hierarchies. In a time when global religious violence surges, Revelations explores how often those in power throughout history have sought to force "God's enemies" to submit or be killed. It is sure to appeal to Pagels's committed readers and bring her a whole new audience who want to understand the roots of dissent, violence, and division in the world's religions, and to appreciate the lasting appeal of this extraordinary text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Odell Furtick begins this exposition by saying, Do you believe? Its a question that everyone must answer personally. Its been over two thousand years since anyone has seen Jesus on earth after his ascension, and now the believers are told to wait for his return. Has humanity grown weary in their belief and lost faith in the promises of God? Dr. Furtick leads his readers through the book of Revelation verse by verse, reassuring the readers that Gods final words are reliable and precise. The book of Revelation is one of the most neglected books in the Bible because of fear and lack of comprehension of its apocalyptic writings and prophetic symbols. This book brings to life a concise knowledge of the mysteries of God concealed in the Old Testament and revealed in the Revelation of Jesus Christ. The book of Revelation is relevant in the twenty-first century, and the world should believe the testimony of the apostle John and believe all the sayings written in the Word of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Revelation is the last book in the canon of the New Testament, and its only apocalyptic document, though there are short apocalyptic passages in various places in the gospels and the epistles. This second of two volumes on Revelation offers a systematic and thorough interpretation of the latter chapters of the book. Revelation brings together the worlds of heaven, earth and hell in a final confrontation between the forces of good and evil. Its characters and images are both real and symbolic, spiritual and material, and it is frequently difficult to know the difference between them, Revelation's cryptic nature has ensure that it would always be a source of controversy. This commentary focuses on the theological content, gleaning the best from both the classical and modern commentary traditions and showing the doctrinal development of Scriptural truths. Scholarship on the book of Revelation has nonetheless not only endured, but even captured the imagination of generations of Bible students, both professionals and laypeople alike. Through its focus on the message of the book through scholarly analysis, this ITC reconnects to the ecclesial tradition of biblical commentary as an effort in ressourcement, though not slavish repetition.
