Book excerpt: Paul Cairns, the narrator of this story, is a young journalist with a penchant for the occult. Prompted by a mysterious recurring nightmare, he seeks the advice of Gilbert North, scholar, country squire and occultist, who leads him on an extraordinary series of adventures involving a quest for the Tetrad, four primal magical objects corresponding to the elements and the suits of the Tarot. Cairns' life becomes full of weird and supernatural happenings in a great magical battle between dark and light. But in the world of Gilbert North things are not quite what they seem. Layers of reality and unreality are peeled away until the deeper meaning of the whole quest is revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a novel mathematical formalism, based on the tetrad formulation of differential geometry, for describing cosmological observables exactly and conveniently. It covers all the standard observables, i.e. distances, weak lensing, number counts and cosmic microwave background, and also includes a detailed derivation of general-relativistic matrix kinetic theory. All the fully nonlinear equations are derived in detail and the mathematical content is self-contained, so that readers require only a basic knowledge of general relativity. Moreover, the authors discuss several subtle issues that are usually overlooked in the literature and, in particular, issues that distinguish this formalism from the more approximative standard practice.

Book excerpt: Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games columns in Scientific American inspired and entertained several generations of mathematicians and scientists. Gardner in his crystal-clear prose illuminated corners of mathematics, especially recreational mathematics, that most people had no idea existed. His playful spirit and inquisitive nature invite the reader into an exploration of beautiful mathematical ideas along with him. These columns were both a revelation and a gift when he wrote them; no one--before Gardner--had written about mathematics like this. They continue to be a marvel. This volume was originally published in 1989 and contains columns from published 1976-1978. This 1997 MAA edition contains three new columns written specifically for this volume including the resurrection of the lamented Dr. Matrix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshall McLuhan was the visionary theorist best known for coining the phrase “the medium is the message.” His work prefigures and underlies the themes of writers and artists as disparate and essential as Andy Warhol, Nam June Paik, Neil Postman, Seth Godin, Barbara Kruger, and Douglas Rushkoff, among countless others. Shortly before his death, together with his media scholar son Eric, McLuhan worked on a new literary/visual code–almost a cross between hieroglyphics and poetry–that he called “the tetrads.” This was the ultimate theoretical framework for analyzing any new medium, a koan-like poetics that transcends traditional means of discourse. Some of the tetrads were published, but only a few. Now Eric McLuhan has recovered all the “lost” tetrads that he and his father developed, and accompanies them here with accessible explanations of how they function.

Book excerpt: The Olivet Discourse basically consisted of a prophetic outline or blueprint that would involve the restitution of 3 factors that have to be in place before the LORD's 2nd Coming. The factors disclosed by Christ start with the Temple, then Jerusalem and ended with Israel. Christ foretold that these 3 factors would be destroyed, in that precise order. The Olivet Discourse went on to disclose that miraculously, the same would involve a reinstitution but in reversed order at the End of Days signaled by the budding of the Fig Tree, Israel and concluding with the restitution of the 3rd Temple. If this pattern is reliable, then the 3rd Temple will be either built and/or dedicated towards the end of the 2014-15 Tetrad. The event or event(s) associated with the Tetrad of '14-'15 will be just a prophetic 'step' towards the ultimate restitution of all things as the convergence of all Biblical prophecy will culminate in Israel's redemption and the LORD Jesus Christ's 2nd Coming.

Book excerpt: Discovering Causal Structure: Artificial Intelligence, Philosophy of Science, and Statistical Modeling provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of a computer program called TETRAD. This book discusses the version of the TETRAD program, which is designed to assist in the search for causal explanations of statistical data. or alternative models. This text then examines the notion of applying artificial intelligence methods to problems of statistical model specification. Other chapters consider how the TETRAD program can help to find god alternative models where they exist, and how it can help detect the existence of important neglected variables. This book discusses as well the procedures for specifying a model or models to account for non-experimental or quasi-experimental data. The final chapter presents a description of the format of input files and a description of each command. This book is a valuable resource for social scientists and researchers.

Book excerpt: Learn how Solar and Lunar Eclipses, Jubilees and Sabbatical Years are announcing the Coming of Christ. The "Sign of Christ's Return" will show you what to look for to be ready for the return of Christ! We are less than 10 years away from His Return! The Sign of Christ's Return is loaded with invaluable prophetic information that you will be amazed by and will enjoy reading. It also has a very strong message of salvation. This is a great book to place in the hands of one who is lost! The 1st great event in Man's history is, of course, his creation by Almighty God. Satan deceived man, and they were banished from the home God made for them. The 2nd great event in Man's history was the flood of Noah's day. God offered people deliverance, if they would believe the preaching of Noah and enter the Ark. Satan again deceived the people of Noah's day, and all perished except for Noah and his family. The 3rd great event in Man's history is the Salvation of mankind. God has offered to the world the gift of eternal salvation when Christ died on the cross and rose from the dead three days later. Yet again, Satan has worked feverishly for the past 2000 years to discount the record of Christ and to keep people from accepting the gift of Salvation! The 4th great event in the history of Mankind is about to take place: The Return of Jesus to Earth by 2018!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GENETIC THEORY AND ANALYSIS Understand and apply what drives change of characteristic genetic traits and heredity Genetics is the study of how traits are passed from parents to their offspring and how the variation in those traits affects the development and health of the organism. Investigating how these traits affect the organism involves a diverse set of approaches and tools, including genetic screens, DNA and RNA sequencing, mapping, and methods to understand the structure and function of proteins. Thus, there is a need for a textbook that provides a broad overview of these methods. Genetic Theory and Analysis meets this need by describing key approaches and methods in genetic analysis through a historical lens. Focusing on the five basic principles underlying the field—mutation, complementation, recombination, segregation, and regulation—it identifies the full suite of tests and methodologies available to the geneticist in an age of flourishing genetic and genomic research. This second edition of the text has been updated to reflect recent advances and increase accessibility to advanced undergraduate students. Genetic Theory and Analysis, 2nd edition readers will also find: Detailed treatment of subjects including mutagenesis, meiosis, complementation, suppression, and more Updated discussion of epistasis, mosaic analysis, RNAi, genome sequencing, and more Appendices discussing model organisms, genetic fine-structure analysis, and tetrad analysis Genetic Theory and Analysis is ideal for both graduate students and advanced undergraduates undertaking courses in genetics, genetic engineering, and computational biology.

The editor, along with an international group of contributors, and editorial advisory board are leading methodologists who have organized the book to move from simpler material to more statistically complex modeling approaches. Sections cover the foundations of SEM; statistical underpinnings, from assumptions to model modifications; steps in implementation, from data preparation through writing the SEM report; and basic and advanced applications, including new and emerging topics in SEM. Each chapter provides conceptually oriented descriptions, fully explicated analyses, and engaging examples that reveal modeling possibilities for use with readers' data. Many of the chapters also include access to data and syntax files at the companion website, allowing readers to try their hands at reproducing the authors' results"--

Book excerpt: One star-chained evening in a Manhattan bathroom, Carl Schirmer spontaneously combusts! His body transforms into light, mysteriously snatched from his banal life by an alien intelligence 130 billion years in the future. There, all spacetime is collapsing into a cosmic black hole, the Big Crunch - and a bold, cosmic destiny awaits Carl. Rebuilt from the remnants of his light by extraterrestrials for a cryptic purpose, he awakens in time's last world, the strangest of all - the Werld. At the edge of infinity, Carl discovers the Foke, nomadic humans who travel among the floating islands of the Werld. The Foke teach him how to live - and love - at the end of time, and he loses his heart to his plucky guide, the beautiful Evoë. Their life together in this blissful kingdom that knows no aging or disease brings them to rapture - until Evoë falls prey to the zotl, a spidery intelligence who hunt the Foke and eat the chemical by-products of their pain. In order to save his beloved from a gruesome death, Carl must return to Earth - 130 billion years earlier - where he is shocked to discover that the Earth he's come back to is not the one he left. Can he meet the harsh demands of his task before the zotl find him and begin ravishing the Earth? Author's Note: The volumes of this series can each be read independently of the others. The feature that unifies them is their individual observations of science fiction's sub-genre: "space opera," which the editors David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer define as "colorful, dramatic, large-scale science fiction adventure, competently and sometimes beautifully written, usually focused on a sympathetic, heroic central character and plot action, and usually set in the relatively distant future, and in space or on other worlds, characteristically optimistic in tone. It often deals with war, piracy, military virtues, and very large-scale action, large stakes."

Book excerpt: Seven billion years from now, long after the Sun has died and human life itself has become extinct, alien beings reincarnate humanity from our fossilized DNA drifting as debris in the void of deep space. We are reborn to serve as bait in a battle to the death between the Rimstalker, humankind's reanimator, and the zotl, horrific creatures who feed vampire-like on the suffering of intelligent lifeforms. The reborn children of Earth are told: "You owe no debt to the being that roused you to this second life. Neither must you expect it to guide you or benefit you in any way." Yet humans choose sides, as humans will, participating in the titanic struggle between Rimstalker and zotl in ways strange and momentous. Author's Note: The volumes of this series can each be read independently of the others.
