Book excerpt: The Return of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of 13 Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1903-1904, by Arthur Conan Doyle. The stories were published in the Strand Magazine in Great Britain, and Collier's in the United States. The book was first published in February 1905 by McClure, Phillips & Co. (New York) then on March 7, 1905 by Georges Newnes, Ltd. (London) and was the first Holmes collection since 1893, when Holmes had "died" in "The Final Problem." Having published The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901-1902 (setting it before Holmes' death) Doyle came under intense pressure to revive his famous character. The first story is set in 1894 and has Holmes returning in London and explaining the period from 1891-94, a period called "The Great Hiatus" by Sherlockian enthusiasts. Also of note is Watson's statement in the last story of the cycle that Holmes has retired, and forbids him to publish any more stories. This edition by Wisehouse Classics includes all of the stories with the original illustrations by Sidney Paget.

Book excerpt: 13 Tales of Mystery & Suspense—Including the Incredible Story of Sherlock Holmes’s Return from the Dead This Top Five Classics edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Return of Sherlock Holmes features: • All 95 Strand illustrations by Sidney Paget—his final drawings of Sherlock Holmes • An additional 13 illustrations by Frederick Dorr Steele, created for Collier’s magazine • A helpful introduction, author bio, and bibliography The return of Sherlock Holmes, 10 years after his “death” at the hands of Professor Moriarty, was one of the most hotly anticipated events of the new century in 1903. Arthur Conan Doyle had teased his loyal fans with his 1902 novel The Hound of the Baskervilles, a story that took place two years before Holmes plummeted into the Reichenbach Falls. With “The Empty House,” the first story in this collection, Dr. Watson and the world finally learned how Holmes cheated the Grim Reaper and feigned mortality for three years—as he tidies up one last loose end in his battle against Moriarty’s criminal apparatus. The Return of Sherlock Holmes finds Conan Doyle at the height of his creative powers, producing 13 of his finest mysteries for the inimitable Holmes to solve. No Sherlock Holmes collection would be complete without it.

This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE MEMOIRS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES is a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1894, by Arthur Conan Doyle. The twelve stories (eleven in American editions) of the Memoirs are: "Silver Blaze," "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box," "The Adventure of the Yellow Face," "The Adventure of the Stockbroker's Clerk," "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott," "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual," "The Adventure of the Reigate Squire," "The Adventure of the Crooked Man," "The Adventure of the Resident Patient," "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter," "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty," "The Final Problem." The first London edition of the Memoirs in 1894 did not include "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box," although all twelve stories had appeared in the Strand Magazine. The reasoning behind the suppression is unclear. In Britain the story was apparently removed at Doyle's request as it included adultery and so was unsuitable for younger readers. This edition by Wisehouse Classics includes all of the stories with the original illustrations by Sidney Paget. (more on www.wisehouse-classics.com)

Book excerpt: If there's a return, there's got to be a departure. You might be surprised to learn that Sherlock Holmes made a departure despite the popularity of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes-based stories, the ophthalmologist-turned-writer grew weary of the detective and his antics. In 1891, Doyle told his mother he wanted to kill off Sherlock Holmes and stop writing about him for good. As a doctor, his practice was floundering; writing gave him a way to pass the time. Yet it was also a distraction. His mother begged him not to. Two years later, Doyle did it anyway, using his work 'The Final Problem,' as Holmes' last mystery. In the story, Holmes meets his end tumbling over Reichenbach Falls. Much like a soap opera that keeps resurrecting dead characters, Doyle brought Holmes back after a nearly ten-year absence and lots of pleading by readers. He explained that Holmes--hoping to elude his enemies--had merely faked his death to protect himself. This book is a collection of thirteen Holmes cases published in 1903 and 1904. Let's take a look at the stories featured in The Return of Sherlock Holmes.
