Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Keaney's concoction of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy is remarkably effective. Sigmundus is a villain who will haunt readers.”—The Bulletin Beginning where Book 2, The Cracked Mirror, left off, this finale to the Promises of Dr. Sigmundus trilogy takes readers into bizarre realms with fanciful creatures, continuing its signature exploration of the price of freedom and self-determination. Focusing on the ongoing struggles of its teenaged protagonists, Dante and Bea, it is a journey at once thrilling and thoughtful, with plenty to offer for pure reading enjoyment and book discussion. This trilogy is satisfying for fantasy fans but also accessible to the less-than-hardcore genre enthusiast.

They seek for a tradition that demonstrates antiquity and possesses authenticity. This newly translated volume of the writings of the Orthodox spiritual teacher Ignatius Brianchaninov offers a vision of a life that flows from following Christ. The field is both a place of spiritual struggle and a garden in which to cultivate virtues. But are we willing to respond to the challenge of a life lived in accordance with the Christian Gospel? St Ignatius' writing is the Christian tradition at its deepest, intensely practical but also transcendent and mystical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the historicity of Jesus' resurrection has been repeatedly probed, investigated and debated. And the results have varied widely. Perhaps some now regard this issue as the burned-over district of New Testament scholarship. Could there be any new and promising approach to this problem? Yes, answers Michael Licona. And he convincingly points us to a significant deficiency in approaching this question: our historiographical orientation and practice. So he opens this study with an extensive consideration of historiography and the particular problem of investigating claims of miracles. This alone is a valuable contribution. But then Licona carefully applies his principles and methods to the question of Jesus' resurrection. In addition to determining and working from the most reliable sources and bedrock historical evidence, Licona critically weighs other prominent hypotheses. His own argument is a challenging and closely argued case for the historicity of the resurrection of Jesus, the Christ. Any future approaches to dealing with this 'prize puzzle' of New Testament study will need to be routed through The Resurrection of Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communicating on the Playing Field is a book about reaching out to people around us through sports. The popularity of sports is a bridge builder to 95% of people living in our world. We, as Christians, long to communicate with all nations, but find it difficult to do it through traditional means. As the cultures of our world change, so we must discover effective ways to relate to the secular people. The playing field doesn't present cultural, social, political and religious barriers. It is an open field that is available to Christian athletes and spectators. Since Christ asks us to go and make disciples, sports can help us penetrate our world. This book provides a general introduction to the concept and practice of sports evangelism springing from a biblical and theological platform. It demonstrates many opportunities of doing sports evangelism in the contemporary culture at home and abroad.Dr. Josef Solc is a native of the Czech Republic. He represented his home country in tennis and ice hockey. He wanted to study in a seminary in Prague, but the communist government told him it was more beneficial for their society if he continued playing professional ice hockey than becoming a pastor. During the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, Solc left his home and began his studies in Switzerland, then in Oklahoma and Texas culminating in Ph.D. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. There he became a pastor at Hulen Street Baptist Church where he developed a strong evangelistic ministry by using sports. After seventeen years of pastoral ministry, Solc began teaching evangelism and missions at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina.Professor Solc lives with his wife Joy in Raleigh, North Carolina. He continues teaching and doing sports evangelism at SEBTS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reception history of the Gospel of Matthew utilizes theoretical frameworks and literary sources from two typically distinct disciplines, patristic studies and Valentinian (a.k.a. “Gnostic”) studies. The author shows how in the second and third centuries, the Valentinians were important contributors to a shared culture of early Christian exegesis. By examining the use of the same Matthean pericopes by both Valentinian and patristic exegetes, the author demonstrates that certain Valentinian exegetical innovations were influential upon, and ultimately adopted by, patristic authors. Chief among Valentinian contributions include the allegorical interpretation of texts that would become part of the New Testament, a sophisticated theory of the historical and theological relationship between Christians and Jews, and indeed the very conceptualization of the Gospel of Matthew as sacred scripture. This study demonstrates that what would eventually emerge from this period as the ecclesiological and theological center cannot be adequately understood without attending to some groups and individuals that have often been depicted, both by subsequent ecclesiastical leaders and modern scholars, as marginal and heretical.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to say that God offers salvation to humanity? What is this salvation, and how can we become more conscious of it in our lives? These are the questions that Robert Krieg faces in Treasure in the Field. While his intent is certainly to impart information and ideas found in Scripture, church teaching, and theology, it is also to illumine our own experiences. Krieg retrieves the Bible's teaching on salvation and expresses it in contemporary terms. Drawing deeply from Scripture, he defines salvation as God's gift of personal identity, of wholeness. In this perspective, God calls us not to invent ourselves but to discover ourselves as God intends us to be. Those who gradually make this discovery become grateful recipients who give themselves and their talents for the well-being of other people and creation. Robert A. Krieg is professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. He is the editor and translator of Romano Guardini: Spiritual Writings, as well as the author of Romano Guardini: A Precursor of Vatican II; Karl Adam: Catholicism in German Culture; and Story-Shaped Christology. His work has also appeared in America, Theological Studies, Worship, and many other journals.
