Madison's constitutional arrangement was designed to pit the elite special financial interests in one political social class against the non-elites in the other party. He made the constitutional rules unbalanced and unfair, to benefit the financial elites. The socialists are poised and positioned to obtain the levers of power that had been reserved for the financial elites. At the same moment in history that the Democrats abandoned their allegiance to the middle class, the Republicans morphed into a global corporatist party, which no longer defends American sovereignty. As a consequence of these two political developments, the citizens of America do not have a legitimate choice for a party to represent their interests. Citizens under Madison's constitution did well when they had economic and financial opportunities for wealth and upward occupational mobility, and they have not had these conditions since the Republicans passed laws that severely damaged the welfare of the citizens. In the absence of economic growth, citizens have needlessly suffered economic failure and depressions. The constitution of the new natural rights republic is based upon Jefferson's principles of natural rights: -Equality among citizens to participate in government. -Privacy of citizens from the invasions of agents of government. -The right to vote in free and fair elections. -The protection of the natural and property rights of individuals as the supreme goal of government. -Equal access to the courts and equality before the law. Restoring the American natural rights republic means the citizens have two major tasks ahead of them: 1.The citizens must eliminate the socialist threat to freedom. The next book in this series explains that if, and when, California citizens vote to leave the Union to form their own socialist state, that socialists in other states should be encouraged to emigrate to California. 2.After the socialist threat has been eliminated, citizens in the remaining states need to hold a constitutional convention and re-write fair constitutional rules.

In a book that will interest political scientists, historians, and philosophers, Zuckert looks at the Whig or opposition tradition as it developed in England. He argues that there were, in fact, three opposition traditions: Protestant, Grotian, and Lockean. Before the English Civil War the opposition was inspired by the effort to find the "one true Protestant politics--an effort that was seen to be a failure by the end of the Interregnum period. The Restoration saw the emergence of the Whigs, who sought a way to ground politics free from the sectarian theological-scriptural conflicts of the previous period. The Whigs were particularly influenced by the Dutch natural law philosopher Hugo Grotius. However, as Zuckert shows, by the mid-eighteenth century John Locke had replaced Grotius as the philosopher of the Whigs. Zuckert's analysis concludes with a penetrating examination of John Trenchard and Thomas Gordon, the English "Cato," who, he argues, brought together Lockean political philosophy and pre-existing Whig political science into a new and powerful synthesis. Although it has been misleadingly presented as a separate "classical republican" tradition in recent scholarly discussions, it is this "new republicanism" that served as the philosophical point of departure for the founders of the American republic.
