Models range from accepting both bound roots and affixes to only assigning unit status to standalone words. Some questions that interest researchers are 1) What are the smallest morphological units, words or word parts? 2) How does frequency affect morphological processing? 3) How do experimental results affect existing morphological theories? In this dissertation I attempt to investigate these questions in more detail using results from psycholinguistic experiments and integrating them into the Network theory of morphology. I first consider what kinds of information a morphological model should take into account. It should reflect the intuition of speakers that words consist of different parts, while avoiding the difficulties of theories that propose that roots and affixes are separate units. In addition, it should incorporate the notion of paradigms and frequency information. I look at how various morphological theories account for Russian data, in particular verbal prefixes and words where they occur. The status of roots is intensely debated in morphology, and views of the nature of roots range from being complete separate units on their own, to being considered epiphenomena over words, which are the only existing units. Additionally, it is frequently debated whether free and bound roots have the same status, or are different. In the dissertation I describe the results of a prefix separation experiment in Russian, where more than two types of roots can be identified. The results demonstrate that a productive prefix is separated with greatest easy from words with free roots and with greatest difficulty from words with completely bound roots. The remaining two root types are in between those extremes, according to the characteristics of the root types. I interpret these results as meaning that roots form a continuum based on the strength of connections between words. The stronger the form and meaning connections, the more easily identifiable a root. This interpretation fits well within the Network theory of morphology, where only words are units and there are connections of differing strength between them. Continuing with the investigation of different units of morphological processing, I report the results of a complexity rating experiment in Russian where words with different prefixes were used. The results demonstrate that ratings of word complexity show a direct correlation with the level of transparency of prefixes in those words. Results of both of these experiments fit into the Network theory of morphology; however, two interpretations are possible with respect to prefixes. While I suggest that roots are not units, it is possible that prefixes, and affixes in general, can be represented as generalizations over many words. It is also possible that they are not units, and that strong connections are formed between words containing those prefixes and new words naturally fall into the pattern to form new words containing the prefixes. In addition to investigating the unit or non-unit status of roots and prefixes, I study the influence of relative frequency in Russian morphological processing. Studying the data from the prefix separation experiment only with free roots, I compare the processing of words that are more frequent than their bases to processing of words that are less frequent than their bases. The difference between processing of those two sets of words demonstrates that relative frequency is an important factor in Russian morphological processing. These results are in accordance with previous studies in English, Italian and Tagalog, and are thus suggestive of a universal principle of morphological organization. Finally, I incorporate these results into the Network theory of morphology, where units of morphological processing are words and connections between words. The stronger the connections between words, the more apparent are the different constituent parts. However, the roots and affixes within affixed words are not units of processing, but are epiphenomena over the words and connections. The status of prefixes is not completely clear: clearly, generalizations are formed over prefixes in prefixed words, however, it is not certain whether those generalizations are temporary or permanent. Overall, the Network theory of morphology is revised and updated according to the reported experimental results.

Traditionally, different meanings have been investigated and listed in the dictionaries and grammars and more recently linguists attempted to unify various prefix usages under more general descriptions. The existent semantic approaches, however, do not aim to use semantic representations in order to account for the problems of prefix stacking and aspect determination. This task has been so far undertaken by syntactic approaches to prefixation, that divide verbal prefixes in classes and limit complex verb formation by restricting structural positions available for the members of each class. I show that these approaches have two major drawbacks: the implicit prediction of the non-existence of complex biaspectual verbs and the absence of uniformly accepted formal criteria for the underlying prefix classification. In this book the reader can find an implementable formal semantic approach to prefixation that covers five prefixes: za-, na-, po-, pere-, and do-. It is shown how to predict the existence, semantics, and aspect of a given complex verb with the help of the combination of an LTAG and frame semantics. The task of identifying the possible affix combinations is distributed between three modules: syntax, which is kept simple (only basic structural assumptions), frame semantics, which ensures that the constraints are respected, and pragmatics, which rules out some prefixed verbs and restricts the range of available interpretations. For the purpose of the evaluation of the theory, an implementation of the proposed analysis for a grammar fragment using a metagrammar description is provided. It is shown that the proposed analysis delivers more accurate and complete predictions with respect to the existence of complex verbs than the most precise syntactic account.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Understanding Morphology has been fully revised in line with the latest research. It now includes 'big picture' questions to highlight central themes in morphology, as well as research exercises for each chapter. Understanding Morphology presents an introduction to the study of word structure that starts at the very beginning. Assuming no knowledge of the field of morphology on the part of the reader, the book presents a broad range of morphological phenomena from a wide variety of languages. Starting with the core areas of inflection and derivation, the book presents the interfaces between morphology and syntax and between morphology and phonology. The synchronic study of word structure is covered, as are the phenomena of diachronic change, such as analogy and grammaticalization. Theories are presented clearly in accessible language with the main purpose of shedding light on the data, rather than as a goal in themselves. The authors consistently draw on the best research available, thus utilizing and discussing both functionalist and generative theoretical approaches. Each chapter includes a summary, suggestions for further reading, and exercises. As such this is the ideal book for both beginning students of linguistics, or anyone in a related discipline looking for a first introduction to morphology.

Book excerpt: Correct word identification and processing is a prerequisite for accurate reading, and decades of psycholinguistic and neuroscientific research have shown that the magical moments of visual word recognition are short-lived and markedly fast. The time window in which a given letter string passes from being a mere sequence of printed curves and strokes to acquiring the word status takes around one third of a second. In a few hundred milliseconds, a skilled reader recognizes an isolated word and carries out a number of underlying processes, such as the encoding of letter position and letter identity, and lexico-semantic information retrieval. However, the precise manner (and order) in which these processes occur (or co-occur) is a matter of contention subject to empirical research. There’s no agreement regarding the precise timing of some of the essential processes that guide visual word processing, such as precise letter identification, letter position assignment or sub-word unit processing (bigrams, trigrams, syllables, morphemes), among others. Which is the sequence of processes that lead to lexical access? How do these and other processes interact with each other during the early moments of word processing? Do these processes occur in a serial fashion or do they take place in parallel? Are these processes subject to mutual interaction principles? Is feedback allowed for within the earliest stages of word identification? And ultimately, when does the reader’s brain effectively identify a given word? A vast number of questions remain open, and this Research Topic will cover some of them, giving the readership the opportunity to understand how the scientific community faces the problem of modeling the early stages of word identification according to the latest neuroscientific findings. The present Research Topic aimed to combine recent experimental evidence on early word processing from different techniques together with comprehensive reviews of the current work directions, in order to create a landmark forum in which experts in the field defined the state of the art and future directions. We were willing to receive submissions of empirical as well as theoretical and review articles based on different computational and neuroscience-oriented methodologies. We especially encouraged researchers primarily using electrophysiological or magnetoencephalographic techniques as well as eye-tracking to participate, given that these techniques provide us with the opportunity to uncover the mysteries of lexical access allowing for a fine-grained time-course analysis. The main focus of interest concerned the processes that are held within the initial 250-300 milliseconds after word presentation, covering areas that link basic visuo-attentional systems with linguistic mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Generative Phonology: Description and Theory provides a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts of generative phonology and the applications of these concepts in further study of phonological structure. This book is composed of 10 chapters and begins with a survey of phonology in the overall model of generative grammar and introduces the principles of phonetics to. The subsequent chapters introduce the fundamental concept of a phonological rule that relates an underlying representation to a phonetic representation and this concept is applied to the analysis of morphophonemic alternation. These topics are followed by a presentation of phonological sketches of four diverse languages in terms of rules relating underlying and phonetic representations, as well as the major corpus-internal principles and techniques of phonological analysis. The discussion then shifts to the theoretical aspects of phonology, the various degrees of abstractness, and the proposals to limit the divergence between underlying and phonetic representation. Other chapters deal with some of the issues revolving around the representation of sounds and the various hypotheses as to how phonological rules apply to convert the underlying representation to the phonetic representation, particularly the kinds of considerations that motivate rule-ordering statements. The last chapters explore the major notational devices commonly employed in the formulation of phonological rules and the role of syntactic and lexical information in controlling the application of phonological rules. This book is intended primarily for linguistics and phonologists.
