We find it in his earlier works, in his Scenes from the Life of the Virgin, ' and in the much-restored Visit of the Queen of Sheba' (i 5 - all glass-paintings in the church of St. Gervais, - and again the same type appears in the Salutation, ' executed thirteen years later at Ecouen. His colour shows corresponding peculiarities, for rich violets, dark browns, and tones of sombre crimson replenish the scantier resources of the school from which he sprang, and combine to produce an effect of great depth and force.
