Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Teaching of the Old Testament IN this exposition of the religious teaching of the Old Testament I have adopted the topical method as best cal culated to meet the needs of the preacher and general Bible student. This method presupposes some acquaint ance with the religious history of Israel taken as a whole. The first chapter is consequently devoted to a brief outline of the development of Old Testament religion and liter ature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Ideas of the Old Testament Scripture is shown by its fundamental conception of religion as the personal fellowship of God and man. Prior to the New Testament, and judged simply from the stand point of comparative religion, the Old Testament offers the purest and noblest example of that conception. The proof of the reality of that fellowship is the moral emphasis which characterises the religion of Israel. The author of this book is much, indebted to Dr. G. Buchanan Gray and the Rev. David Stewart, m.a., who have read it in manuscript, and rendered valuable help by their numerous criticisms and suggestions. He has also to thank the Rev. H. O. Rowse, m.a., for assistance in the correction of the proofs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Old Testament The events of the past six years have served to bring into clearer relief the permanent religious value of much of the Old Testament teaching, and many of the sermons stand in relation to burning questions which were directly raised by the war, and form as it were landmarks of stages in the crisis through which we have passed. These have been allowed to remain as they were written, on the view that their applica tion to the special circumstances of the moment would illustrate the more clearly the abiding moral and spiritual importance of the Old Testament. Their grouping under this aspect may be gathered from the dates which are given in the Table of Contents. As arranged in the book they follow the natural Old Testament order; and it has happened, without special design, that they offer an outline of Old Testament history in relation to religious thought which is fairly continuous for a considerable period.1 Thus the writer hopes that the book may not be without value as a brief introduction to the historical study of Old Testament religion. The writer's thanks are due to the editor of the Interpreter for permission to reprint Sermons V. And VI. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian View of the Old Testament During the past half century the attitude of many men toward the Bible has undergone a decided change. The old confidence seems to be gone; a feeling of uncertainty and of unrest has taken its place. This small volume is intended to set forth the Christian View of the Old Testa ment, and to furnish answers to some of the questions men are asking concerning the Sacred Scriptures of the Hebrews, which the early Chris tians included in the canon of Christian sacred writings. The old foundations are not shaken. The Old Testament has stood the tests of the past, which have been severe and often merciless; and there is to-day stronger ground than ever for believing that in its pages men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Books of the Old Testament Nearly all Old Testament scholars in Germany, England, and America, who have been trained in the universities and are not adherents of the Roman Catholic faith, are agreed as to the main results which have been achieved by careful investigations carried on during the nineteenth century, though there are necessarily differences of opinion upon secondary details. It is important that the reader should realise the immense gulf which separates the modern physical conditions of book-making, since the discovery of printing, from the ancient conditions when all records were laboriously copied by hand upon such rough materials as skins or papyrus and were preserved in rolls. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Historical Account of the Teaching of Jesus and of Primitive Christianity According to the New Testament Sources The following work, which has now the honour of being translated into English, and which contains the main pro duct of many years of theological occupation with the New Testament, has met with a more favourable reception in Germany than I could have expected. Not that my anti cipations that it would displease the extreme parties on right and left have been falsified; for even the moderate party now dominant in Germany, whilst regarding it with more respect, has treated it as alien to itself. All the more encouraging is that practical criticism, which consists in the eager purchase, diligent reading, and warm praise of a book by susceptible readers. This experience pleases me the more that I View New Testament theology as the source destined to rejuvenate our traditional Church and doctrinal systems, concerning the insufficiency of which our age, with all its other differences, is pretty unanimous. There are undoubtedly needs and feelings in England like our own, though, perhaps, the power of orthodox scholasticism may not be so great, and the inclina tion to abandon tradition and go back to the Holy Scriptures much stronger; and therefore I hail it as a new sign of the spiritual fellowship of German and English Protestantism, that my effort to promote a deeper and freer conception of the New Testament religion has met with sympathy on the other Side of the Channel, and is to gain a wider Sphere of influence through a careful and intelligent translation. Biblical theology, as a science still in its infancy, is liable to more uncertainty as to what exactly are its idea and the limits of its task than any other branch of theological science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Doctrine of Salvation: Or, How Men Were Saved in Old Testament Times Comparatively few Christians have more than a vague idea of how men were saved in Old Testament times. Their attitude is not hostile, but only agnostic. It may, or may not, affect seriously their own faith. But to be thus in different as to what may be the teaching of the Old Testament, is at least to open the way for neglect of the New. Few would be prepared to deny that religious distinctions of some nature existed among men of old: few would hazard, either that all were lost, or that all were saved. But few have taken the thought to determine for themselves exactly the line of division. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Common-Sense View of the Books of the Old Testament Rufus phineas stebbins was born at South Wilbraham, Mass., March 3, 1810. He grew up under the discipline of poverty and hard work. By his unaided efforts, - teaching school in the winter, toiling on the farm during vacations, he fitted himself for college and paid his expenses while there, graduating at Amherst in 1834. He had been reared under the influence of Methodism, his mother being a devoted member of that church; and up to the time of his entering college he had hardly known of any other faith. Some work by Dr. Charming which fell into his hands led him to a care ful reading of the Bible with reference to its theological teachings; and the result of a long and patient study was the acceptance of Unitarian views, to the preaching of which he then consecrated his life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History of Redemption: Lectures The following manual of Old Testament History is one of Professor Delitzsch's four courses of University lectures on Biblical Theology. As such it has never been published in Germany. It is essentially an accurate reproduction of the paragraphs delivered to the theological students in Leipzig during the summer of 1880. Although I was primarily moved to undertake this translation for the use of my students, yet I have found these lectures so stimulating and helpful in my own study of the Old Testament, that I venture to offer my rendering of them to the public, especially after the generous reception accorded to the Messianic Prophecies by the friends of Dr. Delitzsch in Great Britain one year ago. It seems to have at first attracted little attention even in Europe, owing probably to the fact that it was written in French and published in Paris. Schultz, who mentions a smaller work by Kayser of the same date, had evidently overlooked this one, when, in 1888, he issued the last edition Of his Theologie. The book was first brought to the notice Of Americans by the Presbyterian Quarterly, in 1888. The review Of it then published was very favorable. In fact, the reviewer said of it: On the whole, we regard it as the best Theology of the Old Testa ment that has yet been published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament Theology, Vol. 2 of 2: Or Historical Account of the Teaching of Jesus and of Primitive Christianity According to the New Testament Sources Surrender to Christ may be abrupt and revolutionary; for thus only can he carry into his new life the necessity of finding some reasonable understanding between the new and the old. We need not say that we refer to Paul. On one occasion he wrote in humble pride, because of the grace of God which was with him, I have laboured more than they all. The reference is to the wide extent of the field of his labours in the Gentile world in comparison with the moderate success of the older apostles among the Jews, but he might as truly have referred to his work in thought. He only in the full sense mastered the meaning of the experience of salvation through Christ which was common to them all; he considered all that was implied in it, and he almost completely trans formed what was fact into ideas and doctrines; he started the Christian development of doctrine. And so in his system of doctrine we stand in presence of the greatest monument of primitive Christian teaching, when the incomparable glory of Jesus' own revelation is excepted. Israel as the People of Jehovah, needs, perhaps, a special explanation. In this I have to some extent combined features from the Levitical Law with the pictures of the Israel of the Monarchy. For I am convinced that in spite of much that is late in form and detail, and even in spirit - the Levitical Law, as well as Deuteronomy has a certain spiritual harmony with the prophetic ideal for Israel. 'moreover, O. T. Has come down to us as an integer, for which first the Jewish and then the Christian Church claimed integral authority. We are therefore bound to attempt some total estimate of its teaching. From this standpoint, as well as for reasons 'of space, I have given no detailed separate treatment to the Law, the History, the Prophets, and the Wisdom, Apocalyptic, and Devotional Literature. Often they only represent contemporaneous aspects of the same religious movements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
