Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Accordance of Religion With Nature Inafic apphcafion, than he hasrnade Ofit; that by introducing analogies drawn from the inanimate world, and from the phaeno mena Of mind, the argument became more striking in itself; and that some readers might be thus allured to an examination Of the subject, as mere matter Of intellectual curiosity. And, again, Butler has omitted to take notice of some analogies in that de partment Of the subject of which he treats, which appear to me to be as convincing as any such as those applicable to the subject of Prayer, to the Observance Of arbitrary in stitutions, or ceremonies, and several others. But it also seemed to me, that even those parts Of the subject which Butler has treated, might possibly be made accessible to a larger class Of readers, to whom his style is repulsive, as it is confessedly Obscure and difficult. The reader will see, that Part III. Is in great measure taken from Butler, as any such argument must be. The Essay would have been incomplete without it, or rather, the strongest portion would have been wanting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity the Religion of Nature: Lectures Delivered Before the Lowell Institute The author by no means claims as original the conception of Christianity as coincident with the religion of nature; but he is not aware that precisely this line of proof or defence has been adopted in any formal treatise on the evidences of Christianity. Yet he is profoundly convinced that it is on grounds of a priori probability that the controversy between those who admit and those who deny a special, authoritative revelation through Jesus Christ is now to be waged. It is not a little singular that a priori objections took precedence of historical in the early days of the Church. We have no reason to suppose that Celsus denied the miraculous element in the Evangelical narratives. In times of ready faith as to the occult and marvellous in nature and the wonder-working power of demons, it was easy to admit the salient facts recorded in the Gospels, and yet to reject the truths which they seemed to authenticate. The two leading considerations urged by Celsus against the new religion were its promulgation among and for the poor, uneducated, and ignoble, and its claim to universality, both which features appeared to him so intrinsically absurd as to be incapable of proof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Its Nature and Its Truth It has long been the writer's conviction that more ought to be done to expound the truths of Christianity and the grounds on which they may still be accepted. The task is especially urgent for the sake of the young people in our churches, who are slipping away from the faith because they have been trained neither to understand nor to defend it. The present volume is intended as a modest contribution to this object. It should be judged in the light of its aim. It is addressed to those who are willing to read a discussion of the deepest things, provided that it is simple and popular in its treatment, and avoids the abstruse and technical. Much has accordingly been omitted which must have found a place in a formal treatise on Systematic Theology and Apologetics, while even in the subjects discussed some aspects have been ignored as inappropriate to those for whom the volume is primarily designed. It was also necessary, for the same reasons, to restrict the size of the book, and several chapters have been left out that readers might not be repelled by its length. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Basis of Religion: Being an Examination of "Natural Religion" If it distresses any one to think that I personally aban don all that the extreme school call in question, certainly be may console himself. In general the negative view is regarded in this book no otherwise than as I find it to be regarded by most of those to whom the book is principally addressed - viz., as'a fashionable view difficult for the moment to resist, because it seems favoured by great authorities, a view therefore concerning which, how ever unwillingly, we cannot help asking ourselves the question, What ii it should turn out to be true? But if I were asked what I myself think Of it, I should remark, that it is not the greatest scientific authorities who are so confident in negation, but rather the inferior men, who echo their opinions but who live themselves in the atmo sphere not of science but of party controversy.
