Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Ancient Egypt Ptolemies and early Roman emperors rebuilt the temples on the old lines, and allowed themselves to be depicted in the dress of the Pharaohs, making offerings to gods whose very names they could not have pronounced, it was all felt to be but a sham, a dressing up, as it were, in the clothes of a religion out of which all the spirit and life had fled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Priests of Ancient Egypt One becomes accustomed to seeing, in the ancient Egyptians, 'the most scrupulously religious of all men.' But this statement does not suffice to offer the keys to the Pharaonic civilization; in fact it would be a great error to consider the Egyptians too close to ourselves. Nothing, without doubt, is more modern than these stone heads found in the mastabas,1 than the bust of Queen Nofretete; nothing more alive, human in a reassuring fashion, than the scenes of daily life pictured in the tombs of Saqqara or 'of Thebes; nothing perhaps so directly familiar as the popular stories from the shores of the Nile. But beware of thinking that the ancient Egyptian was a man like us, that his civilization was basically analogous to ours, that his thinking was, in the progress of a world still imperfectly known, the beginning of modern thought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Egyptian Religion The volume here translated appeared originally in 1904 as one of the excellent series of handbooks which, in addition to descriptive catalogues, are provided by the Berlin Museums for the guidance of visitors to their great collections. The handbook of the Egyptian Religion seemed especially worthy of a wide circulation. It is a survey by the founder of the modem school of Egyptology in Germany, of perhaps the most interesting of all the departments of this subject. The Egyptian religion appeals to some because of its endless variety of form, and the many phases of superstition and belief that it represents; to others because of its early recognition of a high moral principle, its elaborate conceptions of a life after death, and its connection with the development of Christianity; to others again no doubt because it explains pretty things dear to the collector of antiquities, and familiar objects in museums. Professor Erman is the first to present the Egyptian religion in historical perspective; and it is surely a merit in his work that out of his profound knowledge of the Egyptian texts, he permits them to tell their own tale almost in their own words, either by extracts or by summaries. His pages are particularly free from theory, and no theory is needed to engage our attention when the facts and views disclosed are so attractive. The author has written a special preface for the English edition, and has modified one or two points in his text as regards the degree in which burnt sacrifice was customary. A few of the illustrations that were in the original have been omitted, and their places taken by others. Mr. Hilton Price has especially to be thanked for his generosity in lending blocks employed in the catalogue of his collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth of Religious and Moral Ideas in Egypt The magic of Egypt's ancient past is irresistible the fascination of her present is perennial. Much has been written on the greatness and grandeur of her mighty civilization, but much more remains to be done before it can be said that we comprehend her. There are still great gaps in our knowledge of her history; and her art and architecture, though assiduously studied, are yet but poorly understood. Her picturesque script and her strange religion still bristle With unsolved problems. This little book, by a student and lover of Egypt, aims only at a glimpse of one of the most enchanting problems of Egyptology. The religious and moral ideas of ancient Egypt yield to no other problem in human interest. How they arose, grew, and developed is the subject of this study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egyptian Magic A study of the remains of the native religious litera ture of ancient Egypt which have come down to us has revealed the fact that the belief in magic, that is to say, in the power of magical names, and spells, and enchantments, and formulae, and pictures, and figures, and amulets, and in the performance of ceremonies accompanied by the utterance of words of power, to produce supernatural results, formed a large and important part of the Egyptian religion. And it is certain that, notwithstanding the continuous progress which the Egyptians made in civilization, and the high intellectual development to which they eventually attained, this belief influenced their minds and, from the earliest to the latest period of their history, shaped their views concerning things temporal as well as spiritual in a manner which, at this stage in the history of the world, is very difficult to understand.
