Book excerpt: Eutrophication of surface waters not only impacts the environment but also water treatment processes, the most significant of which is from the effects of algae. During peak algal growth in many southern U.S. reservoirs, inflows that bring nutrients are at an annual minimum, and phosphorus released from bed-sediments is trapped in the hypolimnion. Littoral areas, described as the most productive zone of the lake, may be a possible source of phosphorus that fuels algal growth in the reservoir. I studied an isolated shallow cove in the War Eagle Creek arm of Beaver Lake in Northwest Arkansas to measure, quantify, and model the dynamics and transport of nutrients in littoral zones. A summary of the research problem, the statement of purpose, and associated hypothesis are provided in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 provides an overview of eutrophication as it relates to drinking water treatment, reservoirs, and zones within reservoirs. Also reviewed is the relationship of phosphorus (P) to reservoir eutrophication, internal loading as a source of P, and P cycling and transport within a reservoir. In Chapter 3, I present my study of sediment cores, temperature profiles, and dissolved oxygen (DO) profiles of the cove to determine the redox condition of the water overlying the bed-sediments and the associated sediment P release rates. Phosphorus release rates from bed-sediment incubations were as high as 2.02 mg m-2 d-1 under aerobic conditions and 4.05 mg m-2 d-1 under anaerobic. Variability in bottom DO concentrations of the littoral zone likely contribute to a cycling of aerobic and anaerobic conditions by changing the redox state at the sediment-water interface. When compared to whole-lake P release averages conducted for Beaver Lake, eutrophic coves were a disproportionate source of P within the reservoir, producing 6.5 times more P per unit area. Chapter 4 describes a study of how sediment P release and algal growth in littoral areas are connected. Sediment composition, equilibrium P concentration (EPCo), and aerobic P release rates were characterized for several sites within the cove. Core aerobic P release rates and EPCo both confirmed the release of P under aerobic conditions; however, it appears that algal demand sustained low dissolved P concentrations in the waters of the cove. This created a nutrient cycle where algae impose a nutrient gradient favoring the release of P by keeping concentrations of the waters overlying sediments below the EPCo. Chapter 5 describes a model developed to simulate thermoconvective flow and transport mechanisms between littoral and pelagic zones. Diurnal fluctuation in flow for surface and bottom waters indicated water moves in and out of the cove on a daily timestep. Overall, the general direction of flow was in along the bottom of the cove, and out along the top. The model and in situ P concentrations revealed that P is transported from bottom waters as they enter the cove to surface waters as they leave the cove. This process applied to all littoral areas of the reservoir would result in a major P transport mechanism to surface waters in late summer. Chapter 6 provides a synthesis of the three studies. Unique processes of the littoral zone make it a disproportionate source of P within a reservoir. P loads brought into the littoral zone along the bottom and P released out of littoral sediments are then available for transport out of the surface of the littoral zone. This P would then be available to be used by algae and replenish P losses in the epilimnion which occur through sedimentation. Our model and sampling indicate that late summer blooms of algae in Beaver Lake are likely fueled in part by P transport out of the littoral zone. The fundamental contribution of this research is the recognition of littoral areas as a significant source of internal P loading to fuel algal growth in reservoirs.

Deleterious effects include reservoir filling, water pollution and ecological impairment. Sediment introduction and transport typically takes place during storm events. Phosphorus introduction, generally from loss of agricultural runoff and soil erosion also typically takes place during storm events. When phosphorus is applied for agricultural uses it is preferentially retained by smaller sediments. During storm events, these phosphorus rich sediments are more likely to enter the stream system. A small number of large storms can account for a large percentage of sediment and total phosphorus introduction, leading to elevated levels in waterways. Increased phosphorus introduction into waterways is a main driver of algal blooms and hypoxic conditions such as the dead zone that forms in Lake Erie.The goal of this study is to determine if turbidity, total suspended sediments, and total phosphorus exhibit similar transport behaviors in an agricultural watershed. Three years of data are available at the Six Mile Creek watershed located in McLean County Illinois. Analysis of total suspended sediments, turbidity, and total phosphorus data show that both total suspended sediments and turbidity display a correlation ranging from weakly to strongly positive with total phosphorus. Hysteresis analysis was conducted to elucidate the similarities in transport mechanisms between total suspended sediments, turbidity, and total phosphorus. Concentration discharge relationships observed in the hysteresis patterns were further described by calculating flushing index and hysteresis index values for these events. Evaluation of the hysteresis patterns, flushing index, and hysteresis index allows for further breakdown on an annual, seasonal, or event-based scale.It was discovered that the hysteresis patterns displayed, the flushing index, and hysteresis index was behaving similarly for both turbidity and total phosphorus on a seasonal, annual, and event-based basis in the Six Mile Creek Watershed. Farmers and agricultural managers may be able to better develop sustainable land management practices if there is a consideration of the correlations between turbidity, total suspended sediments and total phosphorus and the timing of their introduction. This could ultimately mitigate the excessive amount of TSS, and TP introduced into surface waters.

Book excerpt: Landscape scale disturbance in forested source water regions can accelerate the transfer of fine sediment and associated phosphorus (P) to receiving streams and degrade water quality in downstream environments for human and ecosystem use. The abiotic controls of deposited riverbed and suspended fine sediment on the form and mobility of P were examined in an oligotrophic gravel-bed river undergoing cumulative downstream sediment pressures from disturbance (e.g., harvesting, wildfire and sewage effluent) in Alberta, Canada. The spatial distribution of particulate P forms (NAIP, AP, OP) and major element composition were assessed across six study sites in the Crowsnest River that receive tributary inputs from watersheds that have experienced a range of landscape disturbance types. Pore-water soluble reactive P (SRP) concentration profiles within the gravel-bed were measured with pore-water peepers. Diffusive fluxes from the sediment to the water column were related to landscape disturbances, substrate properties, dissolved oxygen concentrations, and fine sediment sorption characteristics. A series of batch experiments were conducted to determine the Equilibrium Phosphate Concentration (EPC0) and evaluate the potential of fine sediment to influence P concentrations in the overlying water column. Results of the study demonstrated varying sensitivities to landscape disturbances due to the heterogeneous nature of gravel-bed substrate and morphology. Macro- to micro-scale processes influenced the form and mobility of P, however fine sediments in the riverbed irrespective of landscape disturbance demonstrated the potential of the riverbed to release SRP to the water column. Sewage inputs had the greatest impact on SRP fluxes from the riverbed and bioavailability of P in suspended sediments. The most bioavailable form of particulate P (NAIP) was associated with metal oxide and organic carbon coatings on sediment. Lower dissolved oxygen concentrations are likely responsible for driving the release of P from redox sensitive metals. Bioavailable particulate P and the release of SRP can influence in-stream water quality and ecological communities, and over longer time scales can propagate effects downstream to reservoirs and impact drinking water supplies. This thesis provides new knowledge regarding the impacts of both landscape disturbance and site-specific abiotic processes that influence the form and mobility of P in a gravel-bed river during the biologically sensitive period of summer low flow.

A large range of sediment tracers exists; however, to date there has been no combined use of tracers which represent the full particle size range of sediments transported in overland flow. This is relevant because particles of different sizes show differing transport be- haviour, but are all capable of transporting sediment bound contaminants such as phosphorus. The aim of this project was to develop a dual tracing method for both sediments and colloids in order to better represent the transport of phosphorus. The link between soil erosion and eutrophication resulting from phosphorus transport was demonstrated. A range of sediment and colloid tracers were reviewed I to select the two most appropriate tracers for this project (rare earth oxides (REOs) and fluorescent microspheres). Published methodologies relating to these tracers were investigated. The tracers were then applied to soil boxes receiving simulated rainfall, as well as a field plot, to compare their transport to the relevant phase of phosphorus . The results showed comparable behaviour between REOs and particulate phosphorus. Fluorescent microspheres had low recoveries in surface runoff due to infiltration into the soil profile which limited their ability to trace colloid bound phosphorus. However, REOs were shown to be a useful tracer due to their ability to identify the sources and transport pathways of particulate phosphorus. Fur- thermore, the results gained from methodological development are useful for the future development of both tracing methods. Therefore, the results of this thesis provide significant steps towards improved understanding of phosphorus transport from arable land which can lead to reductions in nutrient loss and eutrophication.

Large amounts of nutrients entering bodies of water can lead to hypoxic zones such as the one in the Gulf of Mexico. Nutrients are also problematic in drinking water reservoirs, as high concentrations of nitrate in drinking water can cause health conditions such as blue baby syndrome and high phosphorus concentrations can lead to algal blooms. Suspended sediment leads to reservoir sedimentation, habitat degradation, and is able to transport particulate nutrients. High nutrient and sediment concentrations are a recurring problem in the drinking water reservoirs for the City of Bloomington, Illinois where water is drawn from two reservoirs -- Evergreen Lake and Lake Bloomington. The primary source of these nutrients is from agriculture, which dominates the land use in the area. To better understand the dynamics of nitrate, phosphorus, and suspended sediment transported into these reservoirs, water samples were collected at the major tributary for each reservoir - Six Mile Creek for Evergreen Lake and Money Creek for Lake Bloomington. SedEvent, an autosampler system that uses a turbidity threshold sampling method to determine when a rain event is occurring, was used to collect water samples at both tributaries. Water samples were analyzed for nitrate, total phosphorus, and dissolved reactive phosphorus using flow injection analysis (FIA). Samples were analyzed for suspended sediment by filtration and drying of samples. Results showed high nutrient and suspended sediment concentrations and loads in both creeks during or just after rain events, when discharge was high. Nitrate concentrations ranged from 1.58 to 13.3 ppm, total phosphorus concentrations ranged from 11.9 to 1250 ppb, and total suspended sediment concentrations ranged from 2.5 to 4100 ppm. Seasonal patterns in nutrient dynamics were present and, in general, water quality tended to be lower during the spring and higher during the summer. In both Six Mile and Money Creek, the majority (>70%) of phosphorus and total suspended sediment cumulative load occurred during stormflow conditions which accounted for less than 25% of flow time. The majority of nitrate cumulative load at Six Mile Creek occurred during baseflow conditions and at Money Creek, slightly more nitrate was transported during stormflow. Overall, seasonal changes in water quality coincide with agricultural activities, which suggests that alternative management practices may help improve water quality.
