It has not only allowed a number of opportunities for students to receive education due to flexibility, reachability, but also additional course offerings and educational advancement. As K-12 online learning has continued to soar as an option for educating students, concerns relating to students' success in these courses have arose. Due to the concerns relating to student success, researchers have sought to determine what attributes can contribute to student success in online courses offered to students in elementary and secondary education. Therefore, this study examined the relationships between academic success and demographic characteristics of high school students enrolled in online courses in order to determine the predictability of various academic and demographic characteristics on students' success. The demographic and academic characteristics examined in the study included: gender, ethnicity, attendance, grade level, GPA, previous online experience, and lunch code (free, paid, or reduced lunch). The population for this study included 987 students who enrolled in online high school courses at central and southern Alabama high schools between the semesters of fall 2015 through spring 2017. After the data were coded and analyzed using a multiple logistic regression, four variables -- GPA, gender, grade level, and lunch code were found significant in the predictability of students' success in an online high school course. The results showed: a) students with high GPAs, b) uppergrade level high school students, c) female students, and d) students who paid for their lunch -- tend to be more successful in completing an online high school course. The findings of this study can benefit school enrollment counselors, principals, administrators, and advisors to better assist with student enrollments in online high school courses. Future research is recommended to examine if any relationship existed between online high school student's success and other academic and demographic characteristics such as students with learning disabilities, economic status of parents, number of disciplinary infractions, etc.

Book excerpt: Online distance education classes and digital learning tools offer substantial advantages to both students and universities. Institutional benefits include the facilitation of student success in large classes, reducing university expenses, and perhaps even enhancing the students’ learning environment. Students benefit from the convenience of scheduling and reduced travel time and many researchers found no significant difference in student learning outcomes between face-to-face classes and online classes on an aggregate or summative level. However, other researchers question the academic success of some students enrolled in online classes based on certain demographic and academic characteristics, such as age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status (SES), and grade point average (GPA). Despite the role demographic factors may play in learning outcomes, limited research is available investigating whether the online learning modality is equally effective for students of different ages and ethnicities, men as compared to women, and previously high performing and low performing students. Much of the research related to online learning has limitations falling into two primary categories: studies comparing primarily face-to-face courses with online classes without including the analysis of hybrid learning; and studies that examine student outcomes at the aggregate level of success without outcomes broken out by specific demographic and academic characteristics. This research sought to remedy these important gaps by examining student learning outcomes in hybrid and online accounting classes based on demographic groupings. This study evaluated whether students’ demographic and academic characteristics, (i.e., their age, gender, race/ethnicity, SES, and GPA) mediated whether they were as successful in online versus hybrid classes. The most salient finding revealed in this study was the contrast in the students’ performance based on delivery modality. The results indicated that students earned almost 30 points higher in their final scores when they were enrolled in the hybrid classes in contrast to enrollment in the online classes. This difference in student scores based on delivery modality was found in almost every student demographic.

This study analyzed online student success using online GPA (dependent variable) and both demographic and academic characteristics of online students (independent variables) to determine which characteristics significantly correlated to and predicted student success in online courses. The sample included an unduplicated count of 4,046 online students enrolled in at least one online course during fall 2015 and spring 2016 at a public, Midwestern community college. Six research questions and twelve hypotheses were used to determine which independent variables led online students to a higher online GPA. Analysis was completed separately for students taking at least one online course and students taking only online courses using descriptive statistics, t tests, correlation coefficients, cross-tabulations, and logistic regression. The most significant finding was a large, positive relationship between cumulative GPA and online GPA. There was also a significant, positive correlation between online GPA and cumulative credit hours as well as online GPA and number of online courses taken. There was a significant, negative correlation between online GPA and course withdrawals. Additionally, a higher online GPA was identified for older, female, and White online students while a lower online GPA was found for Black online students. Findings also indicated a significant difference in online GPA for both online student groups based on computer experience and remedial coursework along with a significant difference in online GPA just for online only students based on financial aid.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop an understanding of the relationships among student academic achievement, student satisfaction, student demographic characteristics, and course quality factors. The primary method of analysis was quantitative, using survey data to determine (a) if any relationships exist between students' perceived course quality factors and student demographic characteristics, (b) if any relationships exist between student satisfaction and students' perceived course quality factors after controlling for student demographic characteristics, and (c) if any relationships exist between student academic achievement and students' perceived course quality factors after controlling for student demographic characteristics. One hundred and eighty-eight of the 392 surveys were returned for a return rate of 48%. Of the 188 volunteer participants, 33.5% were male and 66.5% were female. Overall, most of the respondents were very satisfied with their online courses. Furthermore they indicated that they would prefer to take all courses online and would recommend the course they took to others. Nearly 60% of the respondents agreed that the online courses were just as good as or better than the same course in a face-to-face offering. This study showed students with more previous experience with online courses were more likely to value interaction with students. Students who were satisfied with interaction with instructor and course design were more likely to be satisfied with the online courses. This research also indicated students with an overall higher GPA were more likely to have a higher online course grade. Students who were satisfied with the course design were more likely to perform better.

Research from online course studies of adult learners suggests several factors influence successful course completion. However, discrepancies exist as to whether the findings can be generalized to 9-12 E-learning students. Literature exploring the learner characteristics associated with successful secondary students in online studies is limited. The research on online education identifies students who are highly motivated, high-achieving, and self-starting as those that are most likely to complete online courses successfully (Barbour & Reeves, 2009). High schools across Ohio employ online learning education to support graduation pathways of all diverse learners.This study explored differences that exist between subgroups when learner characteristics in the online learning environment are compared with course completion percentage. Archival records of students who had attempted credits towards high school graduation through online learning coursework were collected from four participating school districts. The sample for this study was drawn from inner-ring suburban school districts in Northeast Ohio with an urban boundary. The subjects of this study included 214 high school students, grades 9-12, enrolled in online courses pursuing credits toward high school completion. Standard linear regression was calculated to predict course completion percentages based on gender, race, grade level, and grade level according to expected age as the independent variables. The results of this study provided evidence related to online learner characteristics that exist in digital learning environments. Positive results indicate students in upper-grade levels, and female students are more likely to be successful in earning credits in virtual learning environments. The analysis produced favorable outcomes for students who are at grade level to complete online courses successfully. Non-Black students are more likely to complete online courses when compared to Black students based on the findings of this research. The implications of this investigation have practical significance for school districts implementing virtual learning options across the curriculum. It is essential to continue exploring the relationship between individual learner characteristics and course completion for high school E-learners to support online education as a viable instructional pedagogy.

More students are taking courses online than ever before. Institutions are encouraged to adopt virtual classrooms as the market demands access. This study examined the characteristics of students who choose to enroll in online or face-to-face courses and their eventual academic outcomes in their selected course. The purpose was to determine whether online and face-to-face students possess the same skillsets or if there are characteristics that a student should possess when choosing to enroll in an online class or program. Additionally, this study examined students' perception of online courses versus face-to-face courses to determine if there were any differences in students' feedback based on the type of course in which they were enrolled. The course Management Information Systems 101 (MS107) served as the focus of this study; it is a required undergraduate business course in an urban university. Typically, undergraduate sophomores or juniors take this course and are declared business majors at the university. The units for analysis consisted of students enrolled in MS107 in the fall of 2017 and spring of 2018 semesters. The online courses were conducted via WebEx, synchronously with live interaction from the professor. The face-to-face classes were conducted in the traditional environment on the university's main campus. Data were collected from the university's student system, student feedback forms, and the university's New Student Questionnaire (NSQ) and concatenated to present a full picture of each student's course outcome, demographics, and responses to the NSQ. The purpose in analyzing this information was to determine if there are behavioral, demographic, or other characteristics that might lend to better or worse performance in an online classroom. Finally, student feedback was analyzed to determine whether students have different opinions of MS107 depending on course delivery method. Results of this study indicate that from a course delivery perspective, engagement between students and faculty is a critical asset that should be developed in the online classroom environment. In the analysis of the student self-reported characteristics, many of the characteristics for success for the entire sample hold true for the characteristics of successful students in the face-to-face sections. For the online sections, however, the key predictors of success are simply previous grade point average and expectation of high averages in college, eliminating variables like self-confidence and hard working. The results of this study support prior research that states students perform better in face-to-face classrooms than online; however, this research begins to showcase what opportunities might be available for improvement in the online classroom.

Studies conducted by various researchers that have focused on the K-12 population of online learners demonstrate that certain online learner characteristics and online learning environment characteristics may impact the likelihood of students passing or failing online courses. Research has produced models that predict online course success with measurable degrees of accuracy. This descriptive study examines characteristics of students enrolled in online high school courses provided by a virtual learning program administered by a single Virginia public school district. The study determined that students' prior academic success; confidence in their technology skills and access to technology; confidence in their ability to achieve; and strong beliefs in their organizational skills proved to have a significant statistical relationship with online course success. The study developed a model with these factors that predicted success in online courses with a high degree of accuracy and predicted failure with a moderate degree of accuracy.The study has policy implications for public school leaders in Virginia as they implement recent state legislation requiring students to successfully complete a virtual course to graduate from public high school. The study indicates that additional research is warranted to further delineate learner and learning environment characteristics producing a model that more accurately predicts failure in online courses. Additional research is warranted with larger samples from single district virtual programs.

Positive respondents included 23 completers and 13 non-completers. This convenience sample total of 36 students was sent a packet of three surveys designed to measure media literacy preferences, multi-tasking ability, and technology usage traits. Twenty-three students, 14 completers and 9 non-completers returned completed packets, representing a 64% return rate. ANOVA performed on technology history and multi-task data and used descriptively indicated frequent digital gaming and usage beginning at an earlier age by non-completers and greater multi-tasking proficiency by completers. Chi-square tests on graphics preference data showed small areas of differences between the two groups. Stem-and-leaf plots were further utilized to illuminate trends. This study identified areas of interest that warrant a larger study under a more controlled environment.

There is a perception that online education is either not as successful as face-to-face instruction, or it is more difficult for students. The results of this study show this is not the case. The goal of this study was to complete an in-depth analysis of student profiles addressing a variety of demographic categories as well as several academic and course related variables to reveal any patterns for student success in either online or face-to-face courses as measured by final grade. There were large enough differences within different demographic and academic categories to be considered significant for the study population, but overwhelmingly, the most significant predictor of success was found to be past educational success, as reflected in a student's cumulative grade point average. Further analysis was completed on students who declared high school credit as their primary major based on significantly different levels of success. These students were concurrent enrollment students or those who completed college courses for both high school and university credit. Since most of these students were new to the university, they did not have a cumulative GPA, so other predictive factors were explored. Book excerpt: Previous studies have compared achievement in online courses and traditional face-to-face courses and generally concluded that there were no significant differences based on end of term performance. However, other studies suggest that students tend to fail or drop out of virtual courses at a higher rate than they do in face-to-face classes. The problem addressed in this study was to further examine the academic impact of online classes within the alternative high school (AHS) student population. This quasi-experimental study examined between-group differences in the academic success rates of 108 AHS students over time and across different modes of delivery within one year for three courses. The 2-year longitudinal analysis assessed the impact of enrollment policy on course grade point (GP) outcomes, whereas the cross sectional component examined GP outcomes across Virtual Model and FLEX Model instructional deliveries. Independent- sample t tests of the longitudinal data indicated a significant increase in GP for one of the three courses after the enrollment policy change; however, another series of independent-sample t tests indicated there were no statistically significant differences across the two models of instructional delivery for any of the three classes. One recommendation of this study would be the development of comprehensive models of instruction, ones that use evaluative studies to better inform the combined influences of enrollment policies and instructional delivery options on student success. The social impact of the study is its contribution to a better understanding of characteristics of successful online programs and ultimately an increase in the achievement of AHS students taking online courses.
