Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship of perceived leadership styles of North Carolina County Extension Directors' to job satisfaction of County Extension professionals. The relationship between these two variables and the selected demographics of institution of employment, years of employment, area of specialization, education level, gender, ethnicity and age were examined. Bass and Avolio's, Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Rater Form), leadership survey instrument, the Mohrman-Cooke-Mohrman Job Satisfaction Scale, and a demographic questionnaire were electronically mailed to 232 randomly selected North Carolina Cooperative Extension professionals. Responses were received from 130 Extension professionals. Using these responses, County Extension Directors perceived transformational and transactional leadership styles were identified. Comparisons were made among the job satisfaction means with each of the leadership styles and based upon the demographics. Results of this study indicate significant differences in the job satisfaction of Extension professionals' based upon the perceived leadership style of their County Extension Director. These differences most often occurred in total job satisfaction. The perceived transformational and transactional leadership behaviors accounted for 32% of the variation in County Extension professionals' total job satisfaction scores. The best two-variable model, LF (Laissez Faire) and IC (Individualized Consideration) explained 45% of the variation of in County Extension professionals' total job satisfaction. Bivariate correlation analyses identified significant associations between perceived leadership behaviors, total job satisfaction and demographic factors. Major findings included: * Years employed was negatively related to gender; * Years employed was positively related to age; * Years employed was negatively related to transformational leadership; * Years employed was positively related to transactional leadership; * Age.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership characteristics of respiratory care program directors and determine the relationship between the director's leadership style, effectiveness, faculty satisfaction, extra effort, and program outcomes. Differences between the directors' perceived leadership style and faculties' perception of the directors' leadership style were also examined. Directors' leadership styles were measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Director, faculty and program information was measured with a researcher-designed questionnaire. CoARC accredited program directors (n=321) and their full and part-time faculty (n=172) received an e-mail and a web link to obtain demographic information. All participants received an e-mail from Mind Garden, Inc. with a web link to complete the MLQ. Regression analysis and t tests were used to analyze the data. The results found a significant relationship between faculty satisfaction, extra effort, and perceived director effectiveness and each of the predictors transformational, transactional, and passive/avoidant leadership behaviors. There was no relationship between program director leadership style and program outcomes. This study found no difference between the directors' and the faculty's perception of the directors' transformational and transactional leadership behaviors. However, there was a significant difference between the directors' and the faculties' perception of the directors' passive/avoidant behavior.

An Exploratory Study of the Perceptions of among North Carolina Cooperative Extension County Program Professionals about Integrated Programming. (Under the direction of Dr. R. Dale Safrit.) This exploratory descriptive-correlational research examined perceptions of North Carolina Cooperative Extension county program professionals towards integrated programming and explored possible relationships between professionalsâ€"!perceptions and selected personal and programmatic variables. The researcher used a census of North Carolina Cooperative Extension county program professionals employed as of September 1, 2009 (n = 482) and developed a web-based questionnaire, including two sections, based upon four research constructs identified from literature: 1. Collaboration, 2. Partnerships, 3. Discipline or Program Area, and 4. Issue-based Focus. Section I included eight items exploring each of the four constructs for a total of 32 items, using a Likert scale to measure respondentsâ€"!perceptions. Section II included eight items collecting data on respondentsâ€"!selected personal characteristics (i.e., gender, age, race/ethnicity) and programmatic variables (i.e., district, tenure, Extension title). The instrument was reviewed by an expert panel reviewed the instrument for face and content validity and pilot tested with a randomly selected group consisting of one agent from each of the three main Extension program areas (i.e., Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, and 4-H Youth Development), one area agent, and one County Extension Director from each of the six Extension districts, totaling 30 individuals. Data were collected for three weeks between October 5 and 26, 2009. A final response rate of 47.1% was achieved. Cronbachâ€"! alphas were calculated post facto for the four research constructs as measures of internal consistency, indicating reliability. The four resulting coefficients (.38 to .55) were lower than desir.
