In addition, this study will examine perceived susceptibility, severity, benefits, barriers and self-efficacy related to osteoporosis prevention. Women and men of all ethnicities at the University of Central Arkansas were asked to participate in the study. The Osteoporosis Knowledge Test, Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale, Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale, and Osteoporosis Preventing Behaviors Survey were utilized. Correlations were used to determine the degree of relationship between variables. After determining which independent variables were significant, a multiple regression was completed to determine prediction. Participants did not perceive themselves as susceptible to osteoporosis and perceived minimal barriers to physical activity and calcium intake. Their knowledge was minimal concerning alternate sources of calcium and less traditional forms of physical activity. Physical activity was correlated with perceived barriers, health motivation, and calcium intake. Calcium intake was correlated with perceived barriers, health motivation, and knowledge. Prevention programs should aim to increase osteoporosis knowledge of risk factors and preventing behaviors and to decrease high risk factor behaviors in adolescence when bone health can be increased. Health professionals can attempt to decrease perceived barriers to physical activity in college age individuals by providing comprehensive programs based on supported factors shown to influence behavior, including social support and self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: Osteoporosis is a common metabolic bone disease and although creates health problems mainly in older women, but the etiology of osteoporosis largely begins at a younger age. Therefore prevention of this disease is top on the agenda of many health initiatives worldwide. Improving knowledge, attitude and health behaviors is the first-line effective strategy for prevention. Thus in a community-based experimental study we evaluated the effectiveness of an educational osteoporosis program based on the Health Belief Model on knowledge, beliefs and practice (exercise)among a sample of Iranian young female. Participants in the intervention group were exposed to a three months educational program. Osteoporosis knowledge, health beliefs, and total time (min) and frequency of weight-bearing exercise in the past seven days were assessed at baseline, and at the end of three months follow up. This book indicates that an effectiveness osteoporosis educational program can help to improve Iranian young female knowledge, beliefs and regular exercise as a health prevention action for osteoporosis.

Although it has been associated with Caucasian women in the United States, attention is being drawn to other ethnicities. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are concerned that people perceive osteoporosis to only affect Caucasian women, given that African-American (AA) women have higher bone mineral density and lower postmenopausal bone loss. This perception ignores observations that AA women are at significant risk of developing osteoporosis. As such, there is considerable delay in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis among AA women. This cross-sectional study's design primary purpose was to describe postmenopausal AA women's knowledge, beliefs and behaviors concerning osteoporosis. Secondary to this purpose, was exploration of correlations between the Health Belief Model (HBM) theoretical constructs with osteoporosis preventive behavior, especially calcium intake and physical exercise. One hundred and fifty three postmenopausal AA women completed a questionnaire containing 1) the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test (OKT), 2) the Osteoporosis Health Belief Scale (OHBS), 3) the Osteoporosis Self-Efficacy Scale (OSES), 4) the Osteoporosis Attitude Knowledge Test (OAKT) and 5) the Osteoporosis Preventing Behaviors Survey (OPBS). The data were analyzed in SPSS version 21.0. The results of the study varied. Women in the study had greater knowledge about osteoporosis overall; they had less knowledge about preventing osteoporosis with exercise. They regularly used diet to prevent osteoporosis and reported recurrent physical activity. Participants had a general knowledge of osteoporosis but they experienced a moderate number of barriers that limited exercise. Few barriers for calcium intake were reported. Correlational analysis between age, number of months post-menopause, and education and the dependent variables (osteoporosis knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and barriers to engaging in bone health promotion activities) revealed significant correlations. Age and number of years post menopause were significantly negatively correlated with use of physical activity to prevent osteoporosis. As women aged, they engaged in less osteoporosis prevention using exercise and as the number of months post menopause increased, the exercise behaviors associated with osteoporosis prevention decreased. This is an indication that women at this age have to be educated on the importance of exercising at this stage in their life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteoporosis affects approximately 75 million people across the United States of America and other countries including Europe, and Japan. The purpose of this project is to implement a preventative educational program to increase the knowledge of osteoporosis, risk factors and the osteoprotective behaviors of calcium intake and exercise. This quantitative correlational descriptive design implemented the Health Belief Model concepts as the foundation in evaluating osteoporosis knowledge, attitudes, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers. Three instruments were distributed as pre and post questionnaires before and after a written educational brochure from the National Osteoporosis Foundation. There were 50 participants, between the ages of 18-25, that volunteered in this project from a college university clinic in the Southwest. The results of this project did show an increase in knowledge of osteoporosis among males and females. There was a significant increase in knowledge from the pre-test to post-test following the educational intervention. A significant increase from pre to post test on self-efficacy of incorporating calcium and exercise was observed. There was a positive correlation identified from the Pearson Correlations of benefits to exercise and the motivation to implement exercise. Health motivation was also positively correlated with exercise and calcium intake. Further research on identifying motivating factors within this population to change health behaviors would be beneficial when developing educational programs.

Book excerpt: Many people appear to be unaware of the risk factors and preventive behaviors associated with osteoporosis. Education to increase awareness is identified as being paramount in helping to prevent this disease. Present study examined the effectiveness of a three-month osteoporosis educational prevention program based on the Health Beliefs Model on knowledge, health beliefs, and practice about calcium intake, among young Iranian female. Participants in the intervention group were exposed to a three-month multi-component educational program including a group lecture, self study materials, individual face to face consultation, emails and phone reminders. Osteoporosis knowledge, beliefs, self-efficacy, and calcium intake, were assessed at baseline and at the end of three months follow up. This study showed poor levels of knowledge regarding osteoporosis among Iranian young female students at baseline. The intervention program was effective in improving knowledge, beliefs, and self-efficacy to take action about calcium intake as a lifestyle factor for the prevention of osteoporosis in young women.

Book excerpt: The three aims of the study investigated the females' age 18-25 perception, knowledge, and health beliefs, barriers and strategies to overcoming barriers to prevent osteoporosis. The mixed method explanatory design of research was implemented. Phase one used a survey to gather demographic data, past and current behaviors, the completion of the Osteoporosis Health Behavior Scale (OHBS) questionnaire, and Short Calcium Intake List (SCaIL). Four hundred forty-nine quality survey responses were obtained. The second phase, the focus group (n=23), discussed questions designed to answer the three aims of the study. Results- Our analysis showed 90% of our 447 survey participants did not ingest the RDA of 1000mg of calcium. Those that drank milk growing up and ate four or more family meals were more likely to consume the RDA of calcium as a young adult. Also those consuming 2 or more glasses of milk per day as a young adult were more likely to meet calcium RDA. As participants were more health motivated they saw fewer barriers to exercise and calcium intake. There was a positive relationship between if participants believed they were more susceptible to and viewed osteoporosis as serious they were more likely to believe there were more barriers to helping themselves. Conclusion- These results suggest a need for nutrition education using hands-on teaching methods, and a national marketing/social media platform focused towards the young adult female pertaining to dietary consumption of calcium, vitamin D and physical activity as it relates to bone health/prevention of osteoporosis. This age group are the future parents and leaders of the next generation and current and past research indicates education of healthy meals, childhood milk consumption and family meals equate to healthier future outcomes of the next generation.

Book excerpt: Osteoporosis is a common chronic disease amongst older adults in high-income countries such as Canada. Women are four times more likely than men to be diagnosed with osteoporosis (Alswat, 2017). Although populations in many high-income countries have become increasingly diverse with waves of immigrants, there has been limited research involving these new arrivals to Canada. There are studies that show that using the Health Belief Model (HBM) is effective for developing osteoporosis prevention programs. The objective of this study is to examine osteoporosis health beliefs and knowledge among female Southeast Asian immigrants living in Regina, Saskatchewan. Using a phenomenological approach, I interviewed individuals to explore osteoporosis health beliefs and behaviours. Eight female participants, including five from Thailand and three from Myanmar, aged 25-49 participated in the interviews that were audio-taped. Field notes and reflexivity were recorded throughout the research process to document thoughts and emotions about the contents and process of the study. Analysis followed hermeneutic phenomenology and allowed for emergence of themes. Six themes were developed. The first theme is osteoporosis knowledge. It has three subthemes: no osteoporosis knowledge, low osteoporosis knowledge, and osteoporosis is misunderstood. The second theme is osteoporosis beliefs, and it has two subthemes, subtheme one: having osteoporosis is painful, and subtheme two: having osteoporosis decreases organ/muscle support. The third theme is food culture, and its subthemes are: preference (prefer cultural food and food does not taste authentic), subtheme two: changing food habits, and subtheme three: food beliefs (cultural food is healthy while Canadian food is unhealthy). The fourth theme is nutrition behaviour, which has two subthemes, subtheme one: calcium (low calcium consumption, having enough calcium, and no calcium rich food knowledge), and subtheme two: taking supplements but not calcium. The fifth theme is physical activity, which has three subthemes, including subtheme one: levels of physical activity; subtheme two: physical barriers; and subtheme three: physical activity beliefs. Finally, theme sixth is influencers, which has five subthemes, including subtheme one: personal beliefs influenced eating habits; subtheme two: internet, subtheme three: family, subtheme four: friends, and subtheme five: healthcare professionals. This study reflects one step towards a better understanding of osteoporosis knowledge and health beliefs among Southeast Asian immigrants to Canada. Future research needs to examine perspectives of different ethnic groups. There is also a need to gain a better understanding of the barriers to osteoporosis health prevention in order to develop effective policies that support osteoporosis prevention.

Book excerpt: Study Design: Pre-test/post-test control group research design to test the effectiveness of an osteoporosis educational in-service program with female high school students. Background: Peak bone mass and density occur at critical critical periods primarily during adolescence. Girls developmentally start off with a lesser peak bone mass than boys and suffer more osteoporosis consquences as adult women. Purpose: To determine if adolescent girls who participate in an in-service educational program about osteoporosis and bone density development will have improved knowledge about osteoporosis and improved confidence in health behaviors for bone density development as well as improved bone-health lifestyle behaviors compared to adolescents who do not participate in an in-service educational program. Methods and Measures: Eighty four girls from two high schools in a north eastern city school district participated. One school was randomly determined as the treatment and the other as the control group. Pretests on knowledge, self-efficacy, calcium intake, and previous day physical activity were collected in the treatment and control groups. Two to three days after the initial testing, an educational in-service program about osteoporosis and osteoporosis prevention was presented to the treatment group during a 50-minute class-time block. Time was allowed for planned discussion and a calcium-rich snack. No educational in-service program was given to control group participants. Approximately a week after the educational in-service, the four test instruments were again given to all students. The differential effects of intervention vs. no intervention were determined using 2 x 2 analyses of variance. Seven dependent variables from the four test instruments were analyzed. Results: 1) Significant differences were found for the main effect of time and the main effect of group on all measures of the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test: total scores, exercise subscale scores, and calcium subscale scores. The scores were much higher at posttest for the treatment group while posttest scores remained similar to pretest scores for the control group. 2) Scores for improved confidence for conducting activities related to osteoporosis prevention were encouraging. While there were no main effects for group or time of testing, there was a significant interaction of the two. The treatment group showed significantly greater increases for self-efficacy from pretest to posttest compared to participant scores in the control group. 3) Although the interaction analyses for the behavioral tests were also significant, both for calcium consumption and metabolic equivalent task (MET) values of physical activity, performance trends did not exhibit patterns like that of the OKT and OSES, and may be misleading. Conclusion: An osteoporosis educational in-service can significantly improve overall knowledge in high school girls as well as their confidence for exercising and calcium consumption; however, it is not clear that an educational in-service alone is an adequate intervention to change nutrition or exercise lifestyle behaviors.
