Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disorder that affects approximately one million individuals in the United States. People with MS face many physical, psychological, and psychosocial challenges. Given its unpredictable symptoms, treatment complication, and potential disruptions in social and vocational functioning, MS can lead to high levels of stress. Therefore, effective stress management practices are imperative to help individuals with MS manage their disease complications and stress levels. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of positive protective person and environment (P-E) factors, including positive cognitive stress appraisal, core self-evaluations (CSE), resilience, hope, spirituality, social support, and environmental supports in the relationship between functional disability and stress. The sample comprised 373 participants with MS. Simple mediation analyses indicated that positive cognitive stress appraisal, CSE, resilience, hope, social support, and environmental supports mediated the relationship between functional disability and stress. Parallel mediation analysis demonstrated that only CSE and environmental supports partially mediated the functional disability-stress relationship. Additionally, only CSE was found to be a moderator between functional disability and stress. Findings of this study extend the literature on the synergetic effect of boosting person and environment protective factors in MS stress management. Implications for practices and future research are discussed.
