Analysis of the research literature exploring the therapeutic relationship revealed this relationship to occupy a central position in the overall outcome of therapy (Wampold, 2001). Previous studies have highlighted the importance of client, not therapist, perspectives on the relationship. That is, client perceptions of the relationship are strongly associated with outcome. It was argued that the majority of studies exploring this domain have utilised a quantitative methodology, however, there was a significant absence of those aspects of the therapeutic relationship that clients perceive as helpful and unhelpful.
