Book excerpt: Author's abstract: While it may seem that in today's society, the leaders of the school should primarily concentrate on curriculum, assessment, and accountability, there is one significant missing piece that is just as important: school culture. Recent educational reform efforts have focused on creating effective school cultures as a means of improving student achievement. Because the role of the principal is viewed as being essential to the successful implementation of these efforts, the demands on school leaders have continuously increased, which have created a multitude of challenges for school leaders across the nation. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the leadership style of principals and school culture as perceived by faculty. A total of 250 teachers from 50 elementary, middle, and high schools located in five school districts in the state of Georgia were selected to participate in this study. Data for this quantitative study were collected using the School Culture Survey, which assessed the following six factors of school culture: collaborative leadership, teacher collaboration, unity of purpose, professional development, collegial support, and learning partnership. In addition, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire Form 5X was used to classify the leadership styles of principals as transformational, transactional, or laissez-faire. The means, standard deviations, and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationship between the variables. The results of this study indicated that there was a statistically significant relationship between most of the factors of the leadership styles of principals and the factors of school culture. More specifically, the findings indicated that a positive relationship existed between all of the factors of transformational leadership and all of the factors of school culture. In addition, one factor of transactional leadership, contingent reward, was positively correlated with school culture. On the contrary, a negative relationship existed between all of the factors of laissez-faire leadership and all of the factors of school culture.

Book excerpt: Principals who understand and nurture positive school culture often experience academic and career success. This dissertation focuses on leadership styles and their relationship to school culture in a small rural school district in Southeast Missouri. The study answers the following questions : 1. What are the critical functions of effective leaders as perceived by both teachers and leaders? 2. As perceived by leaders and teachers, what impact does the leader have on the culture of the school? There is a great deal of literature regarding leaders and school culture in large school districts. This study fills in the gaps in literature regarding leadership and culture in small, rural school districts. This study focused on a small rural school district in Southeast Missouri. The district has a K-12 enrollment of 330 students. There are 18 teachers and one building principal in the elementary school. The junior high and high school share 19 teachers. Data for this qualitative case study was collected using semi-structured interviews. Four teachers from each building were interviewed. The building principals from both buildings were also interviewed. The results of this study show that there is a significant relationship between the leadership style of the principals and the culture of each building. The findings indicate that the elementary principal is primarily an authentic leader. According to the data, her authenticity has led to a positive school culture. The staff also stated that the personal relationships sometimes interfere with student discipline. The junior high/high school principal is primarily a transactional leader. His focus was managing the school as a business. His staff attributed his business mentality to positive changes within the school and culture and success in achieving goals. While they appreciated his attention to professionalism, they would like to get to know their administrator on a personal level.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored possible connections between school principals' leadership styles and behaviors and closing the student achievement gap at three schools serving high poverty student populations. Two of the three schools were high schools designated as Priority Schools in 2012 as a result of student achievement that ranked in the bottom 5% of all Michigan schools. The two schools managed to exit the Priority designation in 2017 after implementing school culture and instruction reforms that improved student achievement. The third school was a K-8, which was not designated as a Priority School. It had the same student demographics as the Priority Schools, and it is located in the same district as one of them. It was added to the study to reinforce the data. The researcher conducted 17 interviews. A bottom-up inductive coding approach was adopted for the qualitative data analysis. The researcher assigned emerging themes specific and meaningful codes relevant to the topic and purpose of the study. Based on the data from the three schools, a possible connection between school leadership and closing the student achievement gap was found. The three principals adopted practices and behaviors relevant to multiple leadership styles. They did not limit themselves to only one leadership style or a set of behaviors. The two Priority School principals had to undo the negative impact of the former toxic culture. The three principals instituted a positive school culture based on trust, respect, collaboration, and accountability. They indirectly impacted student achievement by improving the schools' culture and climate and enhancing the curriculum, instruction, assessment, and data-driven interventions. They worked with all the stakeholders to align and streamline all the efforts and programs into well-coordinated plans and established common language and practices regarding teaching and learning. They involved all the teachers in the decision making about teaching and learning.

Book excerpt: Classroom teachers continue to be an integral component to the success of any school and to the success of its students. Numerous studies indicate that the morale level of teachers can have an impact on their effectiveness in the classroom. Furthermore, the leadership of the school principal can shape the culture of any school and thus have a direct impact on teacher morale. This study sought to determine if a relationship exists between self-reported morale of school teachers and perceived leadership style of high school principals. Additionally, the study attempted to determine if a relationship exists between self-reported morale of school teachers and perceived leadership style of school principals with regard to the teacher’s experience level. The study was framed by Maslow’s theory of human motivation, which describes a hierarchy of needs where ones most basic needs must be met before moving on to the next level of needs. The research hypotheses were evaluated using a standard multiple linear regression analysis. Results of the study suggest that there is no significant, predictive relationship between teacher morale and a linear combination of principal leadership style and years of experience in education. Recommendations for future research include replication studies using a larger sample population, different educational settings, or a qualitative approach.

Abstract: Abstract A large body of research suggests there is a strong link between effective leadership and effective organizations (Lezotte, 1997; Sergiovanni, 1995; Bolman & Deal, 1994; Boyan, 1988; Griffiths, 1988). Hogan, Curphy, and Hogan (1999) assert that '...a growing body of evidence supports the common sense belief that leadership matters' (p.34). Fullan (2002) says that schools need leaders who can change 'what people in the organization value and how they work together to accomplish' (p.19). Meanwhile Beach and Reinhartz (2000) note that '...leadership is essential to promoting student achievement and creating a vision of success for the total educational program' (P.72). The principal is the critical person who makes the decisions that affect people's lives. We believe that the interactive relationship between the principal and various constituencies, including teachers, students and parents, are important in achieving the goals and objectives of the school. However, there are indications in the research primary school that school effectiveness has not improved since the appointment of a new principal three years ago. Although he adopted a more participatory leadership style that involved teachers in advising about or actually making decisions concerning school business, the school did not have any positive effect as the theory argued. Therefore, it arouses my interest in investigating the underlying reasons. In this paper, the different styles of leadership of the former and present principals will be discussed and the perception of the leadership of the two principals by teachers will be given. In addition, this paper will also present the extent to which the school was effective under the leadership of the two principals and how the two leadership styles have impacted on the effectiveness of the school. A multi-dimensional perspective'. The main questions, arising from this problem, which I address are: 1. What are the differences in the leadership styles of both the previous Principal and the present Principal? 2. How do the different styles of leadership in school affect the culture of the school? My aim and purpose in this dissertation are thus to conduct a closer look into the relationship between the school leaders and the associated school culture created. The investigation will be from a multi-dimensional perspective so as to produce triangulation and better understanding. My central thesis in addressing this question is on the assumption that different school leaders represent different styles. These differences in styles are able to create difference school culture, accordingly. The research context of this study is in the domain of the leadership theories and the culture models. The writings of Thomas J. Sergiovanni, Michael Fullan, Edgar H. Schein and others are examined. I start from the premise that school leaders are the important agent to school culture. They are able to produce culture, to shape culture. The method I use to achieve these aims is by a case study of a local ii secondary school. Numerous interviews are conducted to gather information from various individuals from various posts within the school context of two distinctive eras of the school under study. A qualitative research method is chosen for this research study. The results show that school leaders of different leadership styles have influences on the school culture. From these, I conclude that school leaders are able to shape school culture, according to their leadership styles.
