Research has shown a significant positive relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension. However, little is known about writing fluency and its connection with reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between reading fluency, writing fluency, and reading comprehension. First, using the principles of assessing reading fluency, I designed a writing assessment and measured the writing fluency of 54 3rd graders. I examined the writing assessments as they related to the students' reading fluency and reading comprehension scores. Secondly, I performed a quasi-experimental scientific study with 3rd grade students. The control group (n=36) were taught the board-adopted language arts curriculum, while the experimental group (n=18) had systematic direct instruction in reading and writing fluency in addition to the regular language arts curriculum. The research questions were: What is the relationship between students' reading comprehension and reading fluency among a group of third graders? What is the relationship between their reading comprehension and writing fluency? What is the relationship between their reading fluency and writing fluency? Will the experimental group of students with direct instruction in reading and writing fluency outperform the control group in reading comprehension? What other factors are involved in increasing reading comprehension? Pearson's correlation statistic, paired t-tests, independent samples t-tests, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. All statistical analyses were performed using PASW (formerly SPSS) for Windows. Consistent with reading research, the results showed there was a strongly positive correlation between reading comprehension and reading fluency. This study also found a correlation between reading comprehension and writing as well as a correlation between reading comprehension and writing fluency. However, the link between reading comprehension and writing fluency was not found in pretest measurement, or the posttest-pretest measurement. The ANOVA results showed that reading and writing fluency explained a statistically significant 50% of the total variance in reading comprehension scores. This study also showed a strong positive correlation between reading fluency and writing fluency in the posttest measurement. In the quasi-experimental study, the experimental group did not outperform the experimental group: both groups made significant progress. The major implication of this study is that writing could help increase reading comprehension, which results in another tool for teachers to use in teaching reading comprehension. This could result in an additional emphasis in teaching writing skills in the classroom.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension by measuring both constructs using grade-level academic text, and to determine the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension when reading fluency performance was examined at the quantile level. Six hundred and five second and third grade students in a Mountain West state participated in this study and were assessed on their reading fluency and reading comprehension abilities using the Narrative Language Measures: Reading (NLM:R), a subtest of the CUBED, which measures reading fluency through a timed reading task and reading comprehension through a narrative retell task. This assessment is based on grade-level, academic text which is aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) (Petersen & Spencer, 2016). As prior research has demonstrated (Reese, Suggate, Long & Schaughency, 2010; Shapiro, Fritschmann, Thomas, Hughes, & McDougal, 2014), this study found a weak relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension when reading comprehension was assessed using a narrative retell task. When the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension was examined at every 10th percentile of fluency performance, reading fluency and reading comprehension demonstrated a tenuous relationship. The differences between reading comprehension performance at the 10th percentile of reading fluency and all other percentiles were not significant. The results of this study suggest that curriculum based measures for oral reading (CBM-Rs) may not be an appropriate indirect measure for grade-level reading comprehension.

Since the growth on these assessments are used in calculating teachers and administrators' yearly job evaluations, the significance of these measures has never been higher. Teachers and administrators want to know if the time spent on measures such as reading fluency is worth the sacrifice in the instructional day, when this time could be spent on teaching state mandated standards. The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental correlational study was to examine the relationship of reading fluency, the predictor variable, and reading comprehension, the criterion variable, among third, fourth, and fifth grade students from a rural, Title 1 school district in southwest Georgia. A Pearson product moment correlation was used to answer the following research question: Is there a relationship between a third, fourth, or fifth grade student's oral reading fluency score, as measured by Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, and their reading comprehension score, as measured by Scholastic Reading Inventory? The results of this study have determined a strong positive correlation exists between reading fluency and reading comprehension in grades three, four, and five. The inclusion of Lexile as the measure for reading comprehension did not diminish the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension. Further research is needed using Lexile as the measure for reading comprehension to broaden the generalization of this study.

However, some researchers have argued that a third component should be considered---reading fluency. Although reading fluency is an important component of reading comprehension, little evidence indicates how much variance in reading comprehension can be explained by reading fluency, or how much the difference in degree of variance is rooted in test format differences. Therefore, the goal of this study is to identify how reading fluency predicts reading comprehension using a multiple linear regression model for fourth and fifth graders. In addition, writing fluency may correlate with reading fluency, as reading and writing moderately correlate with each other. However, few studies have examined these assumptions. This study addresses the following research questions: 1. How do reading fluency and decoding contribute to reading comprehension in the upper elementary grades? Do the contributions of reading fluency and decoding differ depending on how reading comprehension is measured? 2. What is the relation between reading fluency and writing fluency in the upper elementary grades? Results indicate that reading fluency and decoding predict 40.4% to 57.4% of the variance of reading comprehension, regardless of how reading comprehension is measured. Specifically, reading fluency contributed 31.7% of the variance associated with the Gates-MacGinitie, 35.7% associated with the TOSREC, and 40.8% associated with WJ3 Passage Comprehension. An additional 8.9%, 8.3%, and 16.6% of variance for the Gates-MacGinitie, TOSREC, and WJ3 Passage Comprehension, respectively, can be explained by decoding. According to the second set of hierarchical regressions, 37.1%, 39.2%, and 54.8% of the variance of the Gates-MacGinitie, TOSREC, and WJ-III Passage Comprehension, respectively, can be explained by decoding. When reading fluency was entered as a step 2, an additional 3.5%, 4.8%, and 2.6% of the variance for the Gates-MacGinitie, TOSREC, and WJ3 Passage Comprehension, respectively, is accounted for by reading fluency. With regard to the relation between reading fluency and writing fluency, statistically significant positive medium correlations with a range of .448 to .488 were found, which is aligned with the findings from previous studies.

Book excerpt: The current study explored the relationship between working memory (WM) and reading performance in 50 typically-developing third-grade students, as well as the effect of WM-training on their WM, reading fluency, and reading comprehension skills. Half of the sample was randomly assigned to the experimental group, while the other half was placed in the control group. Children in both groups participated in a battery of WM and reading assessments preceding and following three weeks of computer game play. The children in the experimental group played a WM-training computer game for about 10 minutes a day (Monday-Friday) for three weeks, while children in the control group played a computer game that required sustained attention, but did not have a WM component. It was hypothesized that WM performance would predict reading performance, such that better WM ability would be associated with better reading ability. Furthermore, it was predicted that WM span would mediate the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension. In terms of WM training, it was hypothesized that WM training would significantly improve the experimental group's performance on the measures of WM, reading fluency, and reading comprehension relative to the control group. Results indicated that WM ability significantly predicted performance on measures of reading fluency and reading comprehension at pre-test; however, WM performance was not observed to mediate the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension despite being closely associated with both skills. Finally, although children in the experimental group did not show improvements in WM performance relative to those in the control group on transfer tasks, they did demonstrate improvements in reading fluency and reading comprehension. The findings of this study not only suggest that WM ability is closely related to reading skills, but also that WM training may serve as another route to further improve and develop students' literacy abilities.

The study identified the contribution of each of the three reading components in predicting students' third grade reading TAKS scale score on the first administration. Subjects in the study were students in third grade (2007-2008) public elementary schools among each of the 20 educational service center (ESC) regions across the state of Texas. The research design was quantitative and used a multiple regression analysis to measure a collection of student data based on assessments previously administered. The results of the multiple regression analysis confirmed that the three reading components did predict performance on the TAKS reading assessment. The F value generated by the statistical analysis was 256.039 at the .05 level of significance. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected. The analysis revealed that 32.4% of the variance in the dependant variable was contributed by the independent variables. The multiple regression analysis tested the unique contribution between reading fluency, comprehension, and word recognition on students' TAKS scale scores and assigned coefficients to each of the three independent variables. Based on the beta weights assigned to the three independent variables, the null hypothesis was rejected. Fluency was the greatest contributor to students' performance on the third grade reading TAKS assessment. Pearson correlations were calculated for each of the three independent variables and the dependant variable. All of the Pearson correlations were positive. Based on the calculated correlations, the null hypothesis was rejected. As revealed by the analysis, reading fluency had the greatest relationship with TAKS reading scale scores. Overall, reading fluency had the strongest relationship and made the greatest contribution to third grade reading TAKS scale scores. The findings of the study supported Rasinski's (2001) argument that the rate a person reads is significantly correlated to the standardized and informal measurements of comprehension and word recognition. Fluent readers have the skill to automatically recognize letters and words within the flow of reading consistently.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative correlational research study was to determine the relationship between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension of thirty fourth grade students enrolled at a southwest Georgia Reading First School. Data were collected using the spring 2008 Grade 4 Reading Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) and the 2007-2008 System to Enhance Educational Performance (STEEP) oral reading fluency assessments. The Pearson r was used to analyze the data. The .05 level of significance was accepted. The results showed a significant correlation between the reading CRCT scores and the corresponding oral reading fluency STEEP scores for these students. The findings indicated that students who read fluently comprehend better and they perform better on state-mandated tests.
