Book excerpt: This study detected and explored the existence of two proposed school cultures, the use of leader actions by principals, and the relationships between them, of a sample of 42 public schools in Southeast Florida. A quantitative non-experimental design was used, guided by eight research questions. One instrument, the BSJQ, was created for the purposes of detecting school normative cultures and another, the SLQ, was refined and used to detect principal leader actions. The existence of Business and Social Justice cultures was confirmed, and three latent cultures of Standards Performance, Democratic Community and Equity Curriculum were discovered. Of the schools participating, 74% had at least one of these cultures. The use of four leader actions was measured and statistically associated with different detected cultures. Managing/Transforming and Bridging actions were associated with all, Bonding was associated with all except the Equity Curriculum culture, and Bartering was associated only with the Business/Standards Performance culture. The schools' context had limited impact on the relationship between actions and culture. Only higher student poverty increased the principal's use of Managing/Transforming actions in schools with a Democratic Community culture. Four principal demographics - years as principal, years at the school, undergraduate major, and level of graduate study - had a moderating effect on the relationship between the use of leadership actions and school culture. The study reinforces Pisapia's (2009) theory of strategic leadership, develops new instrumentation to measure cultures associated with social justice and accountability, and provides guidance to principals and those who educate them on leader actions associated with desired school cultures.

Book excerpt: This quantitative, non-experimental study was conducted to investigate the link between school principal influence actions, climate, culture, and school performance. Additionally, this study sought to determine if the influence of these variables or the relationship among them is altered by individual and/or institutional characteristics. The first phase of the study was conducted to determine whether or not the Customer Survey aligned to distinct dimensions. Two factors were identified: Staff Attitudes and Student Disruptions. The second part used regression to examine the relationships among four constructs and test the seven hypotheses. Transforming actions and student achievement were found to be significantly mediated by Staff Attitudes. This impact may be amplified among younger principals, and potentially attenuated among older principals. Additionally, School level was found to have a significant effect on Managing actions. Fixed contextual variables were also found to moderate the relationship between school climate and school performance. For instance, Gender was found to moderate the relationship between Student Disruptions and School Performance. Additionally, the percent of Minority students in a school influenced school performance. Free and Reduced lunch was also found to have a negative direct effect as well as negative indirect effects through climate on school performance. Four of the five leader influence actions (i.e., Transforming, Managing, Bridging, and Bartering) were found to have a positive direct effect on Business culture. All five leaders influence actions were found to have a positive direct effect on Social Justice culture. However, neither cultural dimension was found to have a direct effect on school performance. Minority was also found to moderate the relationship between Transforming and Social Justice culture. It was concluded that principals should be provided training and encouraged to use Transforming influence actions during the performance of their professional duties. Moreover, when selecting principals, age of the candidate should be considered since the data suggest that younger principals were able to use Transforming actions more often in this study. Finally, future research efforts should be conducted to understand the reason the female principals are more successful at minimizing the influence of student discipline and safety issues on school performance.

Book excerpt: Practicing school leadership that is focused on providing a just and equitable education for all students has garnered attention in the field of education over the past several decades. However, the concept of school leadership for social justice as a construct remains muddled, in part, because the relationship between leadership for social justice and student achievement remains unclear (Riehl, 2012). To address the need to clarify and support the construct of school leadership for social justice as an effective approach to school leadership, the differences between high and low performing school leaders in Title I schools were explored using a convergent mixed-method study (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2011). Both qualitative and quantitative data about the beliefs and practices of school leaders were collected from school leaders, parents, and teachers in three high and three low performing Title I elementary schools. These data were compared with attention to relationships between the beliefs and practices of school leaders and student achievement. Findings from semi-structured interviews indicate three main differences between the high performing schools (HPSs) and low performing schools (LPSs). First, the high performing school leaders (HPSLs) focused on how to provide an equitable education while the low performing school leaders (LPSLs) focused on why to provide an equitable education; this affected their temporal gauge. Second, HPSLs were seen as by parents as being like family and were found to have a warm demander mindset while the LPSLs were seen by parents as caring yet had a pobrecitos mindset. Third, HPLSs worked with a clear vision for students to reach their highest academic potential with other subgoals this ultimate goal. In contrast, LPSLs met goals for their own sake instead of in service of the goal of students reaching their highest academic potential. Thus, the goals of welcoming, meeting nonacademic needs, and resource distribution became distractors as opposed to supportive subgoals. Two significant differences between the scores on the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) completed by teachers at HPSs and teachers at LPSs were found. These were for the principal instructional leadership behavior functions of supervise and evaluate instruction and protect instructional time. By synthesizing the literature with the findings of this study, a description for school leadership for social justice was outlined. This description included the following novel recommendations: school leaders should develop a critical servant mindset, establish and maintain a laser-like vision for students reaching their highest potential, and develop a warm demander style. The term warm demander was used here to describe the view parents had of HPSLs as more like family in contrast to the pobrecitos mindset of the LPSLs. Findings support the development of an algorithm for designing effective school leadership for social justice or the development of an instrument that measures the impact of school leadership for social justice beliefs and practices on student achievement. Such an instrument could be used to provide quantitative evidence for the relationship between school leadership for social justice and student achievement.
