Book excerpt: AAP Prose Award Finalist 2018/19 Management of Animal Care and Use Programs in Research, Education, and Testing, Second Edition is the extensively expanded revision of the popular Management of Laboratory Animal Care and Use Programs book published earlier this century. Following in the footsteps of the first edition, this revision serves as a first line management resource, providing for strong advocacy for advancing quality animal welfare and science worldwide, and continues as a valuable seminal reference for those engaged in all types of programs involving animal care and use. The new edition has more than doubled the number of chapters in the original volume to present a more comprehensive overview of the current breadth and depth of the field with applicability to an international audience. Readers are provided with the latest information and resource and reference material from authors who are noted experts in their field. The book: - Emphasizes the importance of developing a collaborative culture of care within an animal care and use program and provides information about how behavioral management through animal training can play an integral role in a veterinary health program - Provides a new section on Environment and Housing, containing chapters that focus on management considerations of housing and enrichment delineated by species - Expands coverage of regulatory oversight and compliance, assessment, and assurance issues and processes, including a greater discussion of globalization and harmonizing cultural and regulatory issues - Includes more in-depth treatment throughout the book of critical topics in program management, physical plant, animal health, and husbandry. Biomedical research using animals requires administrators and managers who are knowledgeable and highly skilled. They must adapt to the complexity of rapidly-changing technologies, balance research goals with a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements and guidelines, and know how to work with a multi-generational, multi-cultural workforce. This book is the ideal resource for these professionals. Book excerpt: My writing of this book has evolved over the past thirty-six years of professional nursing practice. These were my first efforts as an author, which were published in 2013: Promoting a Culture of Safety: Preventing Central Line Infections in Weill Cornell Medical Center, which used a performance improvement process to lower the rate at which critically ill patients in cardiac care developed central line infections, and Factors Influencing Critical Nurses' Perception of their Overall Job Satisfaction: An Empirical Study, which used a correctional approach and was statistically analyzed to determine the perception of critical-care nurses of their manager's leadership style and its effect on their job satisfaction. Having been on the receiving end of leadership behaviors gave me a firsthand opportunity to observe these diverse nurse leaders at both extremes of the spectrumfrom laissez-faire leadership style to dictatorial leadership style and everything in between. Each encounter has enriched my life immeasurably. My personal and professional experiences, as well as the knowledge I gained from completing my dissertation, all compelled me to write this bookto share with novice managers and those aspiring for a leadership role an awareness and provide them with some valuable information needed as they forge their career paths into a leadership role, knowing that one of the keys to effective leadership is the ability to stay intellectually curious and committed to learning with the understanding that new knowledge can come from variety of sources and to make it a point of duty to be always on a lookout for new knowledge.

Book excerpt: While past research has shown that organizational culture is related to outcomes such as financial performance and customer satisfaction, this study addressed a gap in the literature regarding the relationship between organizational culture and various facets of employee satisfaction. A total of 295 health care employees completed the Organizational Culture Survey (OCS) and the Job Descriptive Index (JDI). Based on the theoretical models of Denison, significant associations between the traits of organizational culture (mission, involvement, adaptability, consistency) and facets of job satisfaction (satisfaction with pay, satisfaction with coworkers, satisfaction with supervision, satisfaction with opportunities for advancement, satisfaction with work itself and general job satisfaction) were predicted. Regression analyses indicated that Denison's four traits of organizational culture explain 42% of the variance in satisfaction with pay and 29% of the variance in satisfaction with coworkers. Specifically, organizational adaptability significantly predicted satisfaction with coworker relationships, while organizations' level of employee involvement predicted satisfaction with pay as well as general job satisfaction. Positive social change implications of these results are described at the individual, organizational, and systemic levels of analysis. Health care workers would be the obvious beneficiaries of improved work conditions. Further, given the established relationship between employee satisfaction and performance, these findings suggest that the estimated 44,000 annual American deaths resulting from poor quality healthcare might be reduced if healthcare employers target their organizations' adaptability and involvement in the interest of increasing job satisfaction.

Book excerpt: This is the first practical guide for nurses on how to incorporate the knowledge, skills, and tools of Strength-Based Nursing Care (SBC) into everyday practice. The text, based on a model developed by the McGill University Nursing Program, signifies a paradigm shift from a deficit-based model to one that focuses on individual, family, and community strengths as a cornerstone of effective nursing care. The book develops the theoretical foundations underlying SBC, promotes the acquisition of fundamental skills needed for SBC practice, and offers specific strategies, techniques, and tools for identifying strengths and harnessing them to facilitate healing and health. The testimony of 46 nurses demonstrates how SBC can be effectively used in multiple settings across the lifespan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whistleblowing is often about disclosing wrongdoings by members of organisations to persons or organisations that may be able to effect action. Media would at times publish stories of whistleblowers who engage in ‘heroic’ acts of exposing wrongdoings at work, but the whistlebowers often face significant negative consequences of their whistleblowing efforts. This book examines effects of national and organisational cultures on the whistleblowing decisions of employees. The book provides empirical evidence of association between organisational culture and whistleblowing and there appears to be a lower likelihood of whistleblowing in organisations that focus more on the cultural dimensions of respect for people, innovation and stability. It also illustrates how remaining silent or blowing the whistle in response to observed wrongdoings affects employees’ key work-related attitudes. This book would interest those wish to gain better understanding of the relationship between culture and whistleblowing in organisations.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2014 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, , course: Ph.D, language: English, abstract: Today the competitive ability of a healthcare sector gets defined by its ability to manage its healthcare workers. Health workers management and its usage has become a crucial function of healthcare organizations. In such a scenario, people who are engaged in health sector have become more sought after and are likely to stay in demand in near future too. Healthcare is undergoing major changes as a result of a multitude of factors, including rapidly changing technology, unprecedented access to information, cost pressures, globalization and global changes, changing demographics and new levels and forms of competition among healthcare organizations. Our society has seen repeated examples of the impact of natural and man-made threats, and we recognize that we will face severe staffing shortages with the confluence of the aging of the population and of the healthcare workforce. The present study started as an exploration based upon secondary data, collected from research papers and various articles from academicians working on similar subject. The inferences have been drawn from purposive conversation held with the people engaged in delivering healthcare services ranging from medical professionals to paramedical staff working in different public and private hospitals of select district of Punjab.
