Book excerpt: This study examines the relationship between parental involvement in schooling and students' academic achievement. A sample of sixth grade students and their parents from a rural middle school was used to survey the perception of parents' involvement in students' schooling. The hypothesis investigated in this study is that parents of children who are more involved in their education do better in school than children with parents who are less involved. Pearson r correlations between grade point averages and averages of student and parent involvement ratings at school, at home, personally, and cognitively show that general parent involvement and exposing the student to cognitively rich experiences and materials are positively linked to grade point averages. Examination of background variables indicate that the largest percentage of high achievers are girls with more educated mothers living in 2-parent biological families, and the largest percentage of low achievers are boys with less educated mothers living in single-parent families.

The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to explore the relationship between parental involvement and online middle school students' academic performance at one public online school in the southern United States. The research question asked if there was a relationship between parental involvement in the form of encouragement, modeling, reinforcement, and instruction and sixth-grade students' academic performance assessed through GPA in an online K-12 public school. The null hypothesis stated there was no statistically significant relationship between parental involvement and students' academic performance. Data were collected from 143 participants through a survey questionnaire online. SPSS V26 was used for data analysis. The researcher performed Spearman's correlation to determine if there was a relationship between parental involvement and students' academic performance. Each of the four parental involvement factors were analyzed to determine if there was a relationship to students' academic success. The results showed no significant relationship between students' academic performance and the constructs of reinforcement, instruction, and modeling. Parental encouragement was the only mechanism statistically significant in revealing a negative relationship with online sixth-grade student academic performance. The null hypothesis was rejected. Recommendations for further research are provided.

In a quantitative, non-experimental study using a descriptive, correlational research design with multiple linear regression analysis, she found a significant relationship between achievement in language arts and mathematics and parental efficacy. The study population was comprised of parents of 4th-, 5th-, and 6th-grade students in 3 elementary schools in a working-class urban New Jersey school district diverse in ethnicity and language and high in poverty. She found significant relationships between parenting skills and parental efficacy and student achievement in language arts and mathematics. As parenting skills and parental efficacy increased, the level of student achievement in both subject areas also increased. Social networking was also found to correlate with higher student achievement.
