Book excerpt: Due to the concern of underutilization of counseling services by Mexican Americans, several factors which have been identified in the research (acculturation, stress, and discrimination) were examined in relation to counseling attitudes. Ninety- seven Mexican American university students, who fit the criteria of Mexican American based on self identification participated in the study. All students were administered five measures which included the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans, a cultural commitment scale, the Hispanic Stress Inventory, the Perceptions of Discrimination Scale, and the Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help Scale. The purpose of the study was to explore the roles of acculturation, discrimination, and acculturative stress in relation to attitudes toward counseling for Mexican American college students and to further contribute to our understanding and knowledge of racism and its impact on ethnic minorities in counseling. Subjects were divided into high and low groups on measures of acculturation, acculturative stress, and perceptions of discrimination which was based on scores above and below the medians of instruments assessing these variables. Those who indicated experiencing higher levels of acculturative stress and perceptions of discrimination had overall more favorable attitudes toward seeking counseling than did those experiencing lower levels of acculturative stress and perceptions of discrimination. Women consistently had more favorable attitudes toward counseling than men based on the Need and Confidence subscales of the ATSPPH. The results of the Multiple Regression Analysis showed that discriminatory behaviors and attributes were significant predictors of overall Attitudes toward seeking psychological help. No significant differences were found between levels of acculturation and attitudes toward seeking counseling or between levels of cultural commitment and attitudes toward seeking counseling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing in-depth coverage of the Mexican American population from social, cultural, and psychological (clinical) perspectives, this book promotes the understanding of cultural practices and sociological characteristics of this important ethnic group. There are now more than 32 million Mexican Americans living in the United States. As a result, the odds that a clinician will work with a member of this population—one of the fastest-growing minority groups in the United States—is extremely high. Understanding the culture, society, psyche, acculturation, assimilation, and linguistics specific to Mexican Americans, as well as their crises and appropriate interventions, is imperative to provide counseling/therapy services and culturally sensitive assessments. In this book, author Mario Tovar explains how Mexican American history and society affects the needs of this group and how services to Mexican Americans require adjustments as a result. Tovar documents significant differences among Mexican Americans depending on whether they are documented or undocumented immigrants, and on their place of origin—rural versus urban areas of Mexico, and northern versus southern Mexico, for example. Readers will understand how the region of the United States in which Mexican Americans settle can influence the development of certain traits for them and learn about mental and physical health care practices common to Mexican Americans, including folk medicine and "healers" who often include grandmothers and elder neighbors.

Book excerpt: A brand new, fully updated edition of the most widely-used, frequently-cited, and critically acclaimed multicultural text in the mental health field This fully revised, 8th edition of the market-leading textbook on multicultural counseling comprehensively covers the most recent research and theoretical formulations that introduce and analyze emerging important multicultural topical developments. It examines the concept of "cultural humility" as part of the major characteristics of cultural competence in counselor education and practice; roles of white allies in multicultural counseling and in social justice counseling; and the concept of "minority stress" and its implications in work with marginalized populations. The book also reviews and introduces the most recent research on LGBTQ issues, and looks at major research developments in the manifestation, dynamics, and impact of microaggressions. Chapters in Counseling the Culturally Diverse, 8th Edition have been rewritten so that instructors can use them sequentially or in any order that best suits their course goals. Each begins with an outline of objectives, followed by a real life counseling case vignette, narrative, or contemporary incident that introduces the major themes of the chapter. In-depth discussions of the theory, research, and practice in multicultural counseling follow. Completely updated with all new research, critical incidents, and case examples Chapters feature an integrative section on "Implications for Clinical Practice," ending "Summary," and numerous "Reflection and Discussion Questions" Presented in a Vital Source Enhanced format that contains chapter-correlated counseling videos/analysis of cross-racial dyads to facilitate teaching and learning Supplemented with an instructor's website that offers a power point deck, exam questions, sample syllabi, and links to other learning resources Written with two new coauthors who bring fresh and first-hand innovative approaches to CCD Counseling the Culturally Diverse, 8th Edition is appropriate for scholars and practitioners who work in the mental health field related to race, ethnicity, culture, and other sociodemographic variables. It is also relevant to social workers and psychiatrists, and for graduate courses in counseling and clinical psychology related to working with culturally diverse populations.
