Book excerpt: Mathematical anxiety is a feeling of tension, apprehension or fear which arises when a person is faced with mathematical content. The negative consequences of mathematical anxiety are well-documented. Students with high levels of mathematical anxiety might underperform in important test situations, they tend to hold negative attitudes towards mathematics, and they are likely to opt out of elective mathematics courses, which also affects their career opportunities. Although at the university level many students do not continue to study mathematics, social science students are confronted with the fact that their disciplines involve learning about statistics - another potential source of anxiety for students who are uncomfortable with dealing with numerical content. Research on mathematical anxiety is a truly interdisciplinary field with contributions from educational, developmental, cognitive, social and neuroscience researchers. The current collection of papers demonstrates the diversity of the field, offering both new empirical contributions and reviews of existing studies. The contributors also outline future directions for this line of research.

Book excerpt: Feelings of apprehension and fear brought on by mathematical performance can affect correct mathematical application and can influence the achievement and future paths of individuals affected by it. In recent years, mathematics anxiety has become a subject of increasing interest both in educational and clinical settings. This ground-breaking collection presents theoretical, educational and psychophysiological perspectives on the widespread phenomenon of mathematics anxiety. Featuring contributions from leading international researchers, Mathematics Anxiety challenges preconceptions and clarifies several crucial areas of research, such as the distinction between mathematics anxiety from other forms of anxiety (i.e., general or test anxiety); the ways in which mathematics anxiety has been assessed (e.g. throughout self-report questionnaires or psychophysiological measures); the need to clarify the direction of the relationship between math anxiety and mathematics achievement (which causes which). Offering a revaluation of the negative connotations usually associated with mathematics anxiety and prompting avenues for future research, this book will be invaluable to academics and students in the field psychological and educational sciences, as well as teachers working with students who are struggling with mathematics anxiety

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating role that math self-efficacy plays in the relationship between math anxiety and achievement among eighth grade students. Understanding the impact of self-efficacy on school motivation during adolescence is important because a decline in academic self-efficacy often begins during middle school. According to social cognitive theory, both math self-efficacy and math anxiety are variables that are associated with student performance. A correlational design was utilized in order to examine these relationships. Two self-reports were administered to the students in order to quantify levels of math anxiety and math self-efficacy. The students' most current grades in the subject of math were also incorporated into this study as the criterion variable. Results demonstrated that all three variables were significantly correlated and in the expected directions. Regression analyses revealed that although math anxiety was a significant predictor of achievement, math self-efficacy mediated the relationship between math anxiety and achievement. These results are consistent with those hypothesized by social cognitive theory. Despite the fact that mandated standardized testing is increasing in our schools, the primary implication of this study is that students' cognitions about their abilities in math are more important than their emotions or feelings about the subject of math. It is hoped that the results will help educators identify those students who may need additional assistance in order to become self-sufficient learners and confident in their abilities. Educators can also benefit by becoming aware of these other factors that can inhibit student learning.

Book excerpt: This study examines the relationship between the use of technology and the achievement of students, particularly those with mathematics anxiety. ... This fear of mathematics poses great challenges to teachers and students alike. How can high school math teachers help students manage this fear while teaching to a class of students with varied meeds and anxiety levels? This study piloted a computer program with a group of geometry students in a central Massachusetts high school. Half of the students used a computer program to supplement the curriculum, and the other half had no exposure to the program. The data indicates that the use of technology is useful in alleviating mathematics anxiety in high school geometry students.

Book excerpt: Present knowledge on the relationship between math anxiety and math achievement emerged from studies in western contexts involving adults. This study aimed to add to the existing knowledge through researching adolescents in a developing country. The study also investigated whether coping might mediate between math anxiety and math achievement. A total of 419 grade 7 and 8 students from 2 randomly selected rural junior-secondary schools of Bangladesh were taken as participants. Math Anxiety Questionnaire, math school exam score, and Kidcope for older children were executed for collecting data. The result coincided with the existing knowledge on the relationship between math anxiety and math achievement finding a significantly inverse but weak relationship between the two. No significant gender difference was found for math anxiety. A series of t-test analyses of 40 low and 40 high math anxious students revealed that low math anxious students employed more active coping and performed better in math, while high math anxious students used more avoidant and negative coping and performed poor in math. Implications of these findings and relevant research directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: Mathematics is a critical filter in an increasingly technological society, but many students have an abundance of anxiety toward mathematics. Research shows that this anxiety toward mathematics or confidence in mathematics may be related to a student's gender or age in addition to a number of other factors. In order to alleviate this anxiety, or increase confidence, we need to understand the contributing factors. This study examined the mathematical confidence or anxiety of male and female students in fifth, eighth, and eleventh grade. Each student in the study completed a survey about mathematical confidence and anxiety in order to determine a score for mathematical confidence and anxiety. The survey also collected information about a student's grade, gender, and average for their mathematics class. The results of this study show that there is no significant difference in mathematics confidence or anxiety scores for the fifth or eleventh grade students or the confidence scores of the eighth grade students, but there was a significant difference in the anxiety scores of the eighth students with girls having higher anxiety toward mathematics. The results also show that gender and grade average in the current mathematics course are significant predictors for mathematics anxiety scores while only some grade averages were significant predictors for mathematics confidence scores. A student's age was not a significant predictor for either mathematical anxiety or confidence.

Book excerpt: A convenience sample of 123 Hispanic/Latino students from a predominantly Hispanic/Latino South Texas community college was used to determine if gender and/or journal-writing had any effects on mathematics anxiety or achievement. Eight sections of college-algebra courses were administered the Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) to determine levels of mathematics anxiety and the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) to determine levels of mathematical achievement. Results of the study suggest that journal-writing decreases levels of mathematics anxiety among students. In addition, the study suggests that males and females do not differ in terms of mathematical achievement. These finding are consistent with previous studies. However, the study also suggested that males and females report the same levels of mathematics anxiety and that journal-writing does not increase mathematical achievement. This is in contrast to previous published studies.
