Book excerpt: The following study will investigate the MMPI-2 (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - 2) profile of second generation Asian-Indian Americans. Results hope to show that elevations on the MMPI-2 with the Asian-Indian population are more of a reflection of cultural variables rather then psychopathology. Additionally, the level of acculturation is believed to impact responses and scores on this objective personality test. The SL-ASIA (Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Acculturation Scale) will be used to assess level of acculturation (low, bicultural, and high). A sample consisting of Asian-Indian Americans ranging from ages 18 to 35 will be recruited on college campuses, and by implementing a snowball technique. These individuals will be compared to the normative sample on the MMPI-2. A 2 x 3 MANOVA will be used to examine the effects of acculturation and gender on the 3 validity and 10 clinical scales of the MMPI-2. Low acculturated and bicultural individuals are expected to show elevations, and high acculturated individuals are expected to resemble the normative sample. This study is crucial in offering data and background information that may aid clinicians who work with individuals of Asian-Indian descent.

Book excerpt: The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI, MMPI-2, and MMPI-A) and the Rorschach are the two tests used most widely in clinical personality assessment to evaluate personality functioning, current emotional state, and the presence, nature, and severity of psychopathology, as well as to formulate treatment interventions. Psychologists' vigorous interest in and intense loyalty to the Rorschach and MMPI are reflected in the large and still growing theoretical and empirical literature concerning these tests. Given the enduring popularity of these two tests, it is surprising to find that only a small percentage of these numerous studies have examined the relationships between the two. Both tests provide valuable information about an individual's symptoms, behavior, emotions, interpersonal functioning, self-concept, defenses, and the dynamics underlying their behavior. Although much has been written about each test individually, little has been written about how to use the two tests together even though many psychologists use a battery of tests when conducting personality assessments in clinical practice. The basic premise of this book is that psychologists' armamentarium of assessment techniques can be strengthened by using the MMPI-2 and Rorschach together in a complementary fashion, and that essential information may be lost if one test is used to the exclusion of the other. The book examines interrelationships between the MMPI-2 and Rorschach on several different levels including empirical and research findings, conceptual relationships, and integrated interpretations using a series of in-depth case presentations. A balance is maintained between the foundation provided by research and by clinical theory for conceptualizing, understanding, and treating patients with a variety of psychological disorders. This volume illustrates the contribution psychological test findings make to clinical decision making and differential diagnosis, and discusses the links between test data, clinical judgment, and DSM-IV.

Book excerpt: According to Culturally Appropriate and Valid Psychological Assessments for Ethical Use with American Indians (CVE) as cited on the website of the Minnesota Department of Human Services, 26.6% of the state's Native American population who complete a diagnostic assessment take the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - 2nd edition (MMPI-2) in any given year. As such, a pertinent question is whether the MMPI-2 is an appropriate tool for assessing personality for this population. Nichols (2011) stated that the practicing clinicians who participated in the study failed to use research on cultural influences that may elevate the clinical and validity scale on the MMPI-2 with a specific ethnic population. In addition, Butcher and Williams (1999) stated that the MMPI-2 did not include an adequate normative representation of Native Americans. Furthermore, Butcher and Williams (1999) also stated that most studies about the MMPI-2 and Native Americans have shown numerous methodological flaws. Despite these flaws, proponents of the MMPI-2 continued to maintain that the use of the instrument is culturally valid, and it continues to be the most used personality assessment instrument with Native Americans (Butcher, 2009; Butcher & Williams, 1999). The focus of this qualitative study was to provide a detailed view of six clinicians' experiences in administering the MMPI-2 with Native Americans and their use of cultural information to interpret the profile. Using thematic analysis, the results yielded seven themes that were categorized in three distinct domains: A) trauma informs the responses to MMPI-2, B) awareness of clients' cultural belief system by the clinicians, and C) clinicians' awareness of their own cultural competence and sensitivity.

Book excerpt: Throughout the world as in the United States, psychologists are increasingly being called upon to evaluate clients whose backgrounds differ from their own. It has long been recognized that standard personality and psychopathology assessment instruments carry cultural biases, and in recent years, efforts to correct these biases have accelerated. The Handbook of Cross-Cultural and Multicultural Personality Assessment brings together researchers and practitioners from 12 countries with diverse ethnic and racial identities and training to present state-of-the-art knowledge about how best to minimize cultural biases in the assessment of personality and psychopathology. They consider research methodology, the design and construction of standard objective and projective tests, the use of measures of acculturation, racial identity, and culture-specific tests, the social etiquette of service delivery, and the interpretation of test data for clinical diagnosis. Ranging widely through all the relevant issues, they share a common collective vision of how culturally competent services should be delivered to clients. The Handbook offers the first comprehensive view of a consistent approach to cultural competence in assessment--a necessary precursor of effective intervention. It will become an indispensable reference for all those whose practice or research involves individuals with different ethnic and racial identities.

Book excerpt: Four years after the introduction of the revised Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the MMPI-2 is regarded throughout the world as a unique, invaluable instrument. Completely revised and updated, MMPI-2: Assessing Personality and Psychopathology, Second Edition encompasses all that has been learned about the original and revised tests. An interpretive strategy is presented and illustrated with several cases. A new section has been added concerning how feedback on MMPI-2 results should be presented to clients. The chapter on supplementary scales includes information about two new alcohol abuse scales and a marital distress scale. The book critically analyzes the use of the MMPI-2 with special groups, such as older adults, ethnic minorities, medical patients, correctional subjects, and subjects in nonclinical settings. An expanded chapter addresses the psychometric characteristics of the original MMPI and of the MMPI-2 and includes information concerning comparability of the two tests. Computerized use of the MMPI-2 is considered and a computerized interpretation is compared with a clinician-generated interpretation. The development of the MMPI-A, the adolescent version of the test, is presented along with a detailed approach to interpreting the results of this new test. This book is essential to students in personality assessment courses learning about the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A as well as to professionals who use these two tests in research and clinical work.

Practitioners involved in personality assessment will undoubtedly work with Hispanic clients who may be grappling with low English proficiency and other challenges of acculturation to U.S. society. Written by frontline experts in the use of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), Assessing Hispanic Clients Using the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A discusses the utility of psychological tests based on U.S. norms in making clinical decisions for clients from different cultural backgrounds. The MMPI instruments are the most extensively researched and widely used personality instruments with Spanish-speaking clients. The authors provide readers a critical sociocultural context in the use of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A in the clinical assessment of Hispanic clients in the United States and abroad. Psychologists and other practitioners are offered a practical guide for clinical interpretation of test results, with advice on addressing biases, challenges to protocol validity, and other potential barriers to the culturally appropriate and ethical use and interpretation of the tests. Butcher, Cabiya, Lucio, and Garrido provide a comprehensive review of the research literature, past and contemporary, on the use of the MMPIs with Spanish-speaking populations in the United States and internationally. The authors describe the development and validation of Spanish-language versions of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A, offering scenarios from Mexico, Cuba, and other Spanish-speaking countries. A set of appendixes includes T score conversion tables for the Mexican MMPI versions and a listing of Spanish language translations"--Jacket.
