Within the healthcare system the users are patients and satisfaction primarily depends on quality of care, thus patients once regarded as recipients of health care, are now recognized as healthcare consumers. It is prudent to identify and understand what influences healthcare consumers' perceptions of quality care and under what circumstances they are satisfied with the care received. Measuring patient satisfaction has a variety of applications and is essential in a number of clinical contexts. A lack of information exists in identifying specific relationships between leadership styles of nurse managers and patient satisfaction with the nursing staff. The purpose of this research is to identify the correlation between patient satisfaction with the nursing staff and staff nurse perceptions of unit managers' leadership styles in acute health care setting.

These were my first efforts as an author, which were published in 2013: Promoting a Culture of Safety: Preventing Central Line Infections in Weill Cornell Medical Center, which used a performance improvement process to lower the rate at which critically ill patients in cardiac care developed central line infections, and Factors Influencing Critical Nurses' Perception of their Overall Job Satisfaction: An Empirical Study, which used a correctional approach and was statistically analyzed to determine the perception of critical-care nurses of their manager's leadership style and its effect on their job satisfaction. Having been on the receiving end of leadership behaviors gave me a firsthand opportunity to observe these diverse nurse leaders at both extremes of the spectrumfrom laissez-faire leadership style to dictatorial leadership style and everything in between. Each encounter has enriched my life immeasurably. My personal and professional experiences, as well as the knowledge I gained from completing my dissertation, all compelled me to write this bookto share with novice managers and those aspiring for a leadership role an awareness and provide them with some valuable information needed as they forge their career paths into a leadership role, knowing that one of the keys to effective leadership is the ability to stay intellectually curious and committed to learning with the understanding that new knowledge can come from variety of sources and to make it a point of duty to be always on a lookout for new knowledge.

In the organizational structure of most hospitals, nurses are under the immediate supervision of their head nurses. Hence, the leadership style of head nurses and organizational culture of the units can highly influence the level of patients' satisfation. This research is descriptive, correlational study which aims to test the relationship and predicting ability of leadership style of head nurses and organizational culture of nursing units with patient satisfaction in a tertiary level hospital in Manila. Two hundred twenty randomly-selected participants were surveyed using the standardized questionnaire Denison Organizational Culture Survey and Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Meanwhile, patient satisfaction was measured based on the 1st quarter (2013) report of the institutional satisfaction survey. The results revealed that leadership styles are good predictors of level of patients' satisfaction in terms of compassion and care exhibited by nurses and clean and presentable linen and gowns. While, organizational culture is not significantly related with patient satisfaction. Therefore, test scores showed that leadership style have significant relationship with patient satisfaction. Findings of the study can be utilized as a basis for development of staff promotion policy and leadership training programs.
