Book excerpt: This dissertation addressed the following research questions: Given that intimate partner violence is an expression of masculine power and control, how is this expression mitigated and/or aggravated by race and class differences? Are the cultural contexts used to justify the abuse different? Specifically, do the structural factors identified by the abusive men as contributing to intimate partner violence differ by race and class? Recent scholarship has challenged the primacy of gender as the pre-eminent explanatory factor in explaining intimate partner violence. This dissertation addresses this omission by examining how the construction of gender is impacted by race and class as demonstrated through men's accounts of intimate partner violence. The findings of this study are based on semi-structured interviews with fifty men currently receiving treatment for intimate partner violence. In order to qualify for the study, the men had to be enrolled in treatment for less than a month at the time of the interview. Of the fifty men who were interviewed for this research project, twenty-seven of the men were Black, twenty-two of the men were White and one man was Hispanic. I purposefully attempted to have comparable numbers of White and Black men in my sample due to the lack of Black men's participation in previous intimate partner violence research. Analysis of these interviews employed an Ecological Nested Model as the guiding theoretical framework. Currently there is a call for culturally sensitive treatment programs to increase the successful completion of treatment by men of color. Those suggestions rarely move beyond suggesting having a minority program director. The challenges to develop culturally sensitive treatments are real and much more complex than simply placing a different program director at the helm. Further, these differences in how and why men engage in intimate partner violence are not just reflective of race, but also of class and age. This research has suggested a number of policy recommendations that would allow program directors to tailor their treatment plans to account for such diversity, and to use the Ecological Nested Model as a way to better recognize those differences. While acknowledging race and class differences, these recommendations move beyond calling for a change in program director by race and allow for treatment that is culturally sensitive and thus hopefully more effective in understanding intimate partner violence and preventing future occurrences.

A sample of 51 key informants (18+ years old) in 10 predominantly Mexican American rural communities was interviewed to determine community readiness to address the issue of intimate partner violence. Eleven men of Mexican descent (18+ years old) in two separate communities participated in two focus group interviews, and 6 men of Mexican descent (18+ years old) in another community participated in one-on-one interviews to elicit information on the dynamics of intimate partner violence in these local cultures. Grounded theory will be used to examine the individual, social, cultural, and environmental factors that contribute to the incidence, acceptance, and prevention of intimate partner violence. Furthermore, the study will provide suggestions for the development of culturally appropriate interventions for the prevention of intimate partner violence.

Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV) by men against women is a devastating social problem that is experienced by over a quarter of women in their lifetimes (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). IPV in Asian American communities is a prevalent problem that is likely influenced by both patriarchal gender role norms as well as culturally salience factors that are distinct to Asian Americans. Given the influence of norms and values on gendered power dynamics and racial power dynamics in the U.S., it is important to understand the intersections of gender and culture in Asian American men's masculine role norms and IPV perpetration. This dissertation therefore examines the influence of culture on Asian American men's conceptions of masculinity and the associations between gender and culture in their IPV perpetration. Three studies are presented from a program of research spanning five years on the intersections of culture, gender, and IPV perpetration for Asian American men. The first study (Chapter 2) examines Asian American men's perspectives on ideal masculine characteristics using qualitative methods. It finds that Asian American men report ideal masculinity traits that overlap with Asian cultural constructs such as collectivism as well as traditional masculinity themes associated that in the literature are associated with negative outcomes psychological and social outcomes including IPV perpetration. The second study (Chapter 3) reviews the literature on gendered and cultural predictors of American men's IPV perpetration. It finds that while patriarchal gender role norms consistently predict IPV perpetration, the role of Asian cultural factors on IPV is unclear. The third study (Chapter 4) examines the association between several culturally relevant risk and protective factors and Asian American men's IPV perpetration, including the unique and moderating effects of patriarchal gender role norm adherence. It finds that Asian American men's risk for IPV perpetration was not significantly predicted by levels of patriarchal gender role norms, culturally relevant predictors, or their interactions in a sample of Asian American community men from the NLAAS. Implications for operationalization of masculinity and culturally relevant constructs are discussed. Together, this program of research provides a comprehensive and multi-method understanding of the intersections of gender, cultural factors, and violence against women for Asian American men.

The National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cosponsored the survey through a grant to the Center for Policy Research. The survey consists of telephone interviews with a nationally representative sample of 8,000 U.S. women and 8,000 U.S. men about their experiences as victims of various forms of violence, including intimate partner violence. The survey compares intimate partner victimization rates among women and men, specific racial groups, Hispanics and non-Hispanics, and same-sex and opposite-sex cohabitants. It also examines risk factors associated with intimate partner violence, the rate of injury among rape and physical assault victims, injured victims' use of medical services, and victims' involvement with the justice system. Research on intimate partner violence has increased dramatically over the past 20 years. While greatly enhancing public awareness and understanding of this serious social problem, this research has also created much controversy and confusion. Findings of intimate partner victimization vary widely from study to study. Some studies conclude that women and men are equally likely to be victimized by their partners, but others conclude that women are more likely to be victimized. Some studies conclude that minorities and whites suffer equal rates of intimate partner violence, and others conclude that minorities suffer higher rates. In addition, there are many gaps in the scientific literature on intimate partner violence, such as the level of violence committed against men and women by same-sex intimates. Little empirical data exist on the relationship between different forms of intimate partner violence, such as emotional abuse and physical assault. Finally, little is known of the consequences of intimate partner violence, including rate of injury and victims' use of medical and justice system services. This Research Report addresses these and other issues related to intimate partner violence. The information presented in this report is based on findings from the National Violence Against Women (NVAW) Survey, a national telephone survey jointly sponsored by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The survey, which was conducted from November 1995 to May 1996, consists of telephone interviews with a representative sample of 8,000 U.S. women and 8,000 U.S. men. Survey respondents were queried about their experiences as victims of various forms of violence, including rape, physical assault, and stalking by intimate partners. Victimized respondents were asked detailed questions about the characteristics and consequences of their victimization, including the extent and nature of any injuries they sustained, their use of medical services, and their involvement with the justice system. This Research Report also summarizes the survey's findings on victimization rates among women and men, specific racial groups, Hispanics and non-Hispanics, and opposite-sex and same-sex cohabitants. It examines risk factors associated with intimate partner violence, rates of injury among rape and physical assault victims, injured victims' use of medical services, and victims' involvement with the justice system. Although this report focuses on women's and men's experiences as victims of intimate partner violence, complete details about men's and women's experiences as victims of rape, physical assault, and stalking by all types of assailants are contained in earlier NIJ and CDC reports. Because of the sensitive nature of the survey, state-of-the-art techniques were used to protect the confidentiality of the information being sought and to minimize the potential for retraumatizing victims of violence and jeopardizing the safety of respondents.

Book excerpt: The proposed study aimed to identify ethnic differences in how witnessing parental violence, masculine gender role strain (MGRS), and anger disposition are associated with the perpetration of male-to-female intimate partner violence (IPV). A conditional process model to account for the intergenerational transmission of IPV through MGRS (mediator) is tested. A multicultural convenience sample of 225 Asian American, Latino American, and White men from a diverse university in southern California completed the online "Men's Experiences Survey." Results indicated that witnessing parental violence was a significant predictor of IPV in Asian men, but not among those of other ethnicities. Anger disposition was a significant predictor of IPV for Latino men, but not others when adjusting for covariates. No significant predictors emerged for the White sample. Anger disposition emerged as a significant moderator for the conditional process model of the intergenerational transmission of IPV, but no support was found for mediation in the model. Implications of the study's findings, limitations related to measured levels of IPV in this sample, and future directions for similar lines of research are discussed.

However, research has not identified the cognitive and affective pathways that link masculinity ideology and beliefs about intimate partner violence. The current study examined fear of intimacy, ambivalent sexism, and relationship dominance as potential mediating factors of the relationship between masculinity ideology and acceptance of myths about partner violence in a community sample of 101 American men. Multiple regression analyses indicated that, while sexism and dominance did partially mediate the proposed relationship, fear of intimacy did not. Research and clinical implications are discussed. .

How do short run and long run determinants of gender norms affect attitudes toward IPV? This study begins to decompose the dynamics of the acceptance of IPV within couples using data from the Demographic Health Survey, as well as examine the relationship in the context of patriarchal societies using data from the Ethnographic Atlas. I find that females are more accepting than males of intimate partner violence, and females becoming more educated is associated with her being less accepting of violence, even if her male partner believes it is justifiable. Additionally, being a member of a more patriarchal society is associated with couples disagreeing more often about the acceptability of IPV.
